Video games...what ya playing? And what are you looking forward to? (3 Viewers)

Interesting, thanks.  I liked the franchise mode for the most part for both '15 and '16 on PS3, but both have player development problems.  In '15 I found that players developed too quickly, but they overcompensated for '16 where players barely developed at all.  I was hoping they had fixed that for '17, plus being on PS4 it should be better than PS3 anyway.
There are XP sliders now on OS also.  I use them too.

Also all players are fully editable.

Picked up NBA2K17 over the weekend and got a few games in with the kids.  Graphics continue to improve.  I'm not sure I am a fan of the new shooting meters, but I think that is my reaction every time it changes, but I'll get used to it eventually I'm sure.

The game designers apparently are high on Thon Maker's future, as he is utterly unstoppable.
While it will make building my franchise into a monster slightly more difficult, it was a nice add to NBA2K to add lottery protected picks to the AI.

Still getting used to the new controls, but as always, loving this game.

I started Darkest Dungeon on PS4 a couple of days ago.  I'm enjoying the game as much as I thought I would (a lot), but it's taking me a long time to get used to the controls.  You can definitely tell that this was designed for PC -- the console interface is a mess.

You are going to have to share with me your thoughts after more time with the game.  I had this on the PC and everything about it says I should have loved it but I could never mentally get over the hump of treating my characters as disposable units.

This is exactly right.  I haven't played enough yet to comment too much, but I've very naturally stumbled into a playstyle where I have a couple of characters who I'm investing in and being very careful to keep them in good shape.  Everybody else gets sent on what are essentially suicide missions to generate money and resources to build up my hamlet and pay for stress treatment and level-ups for my "good" characters.  Basically I take a group of new recruits off the stagecoach, run them through a dungeon, and anybody who accumulated stress gets dismissed immediately to make room for the next group.  It's like being a Lovecraftian HR manager.  I think this what the game is intentionally going for, because it just isn't possible to advance without throwing a bunch of your heroes under the bus.

The meta-narrative about how you (the player) are an evil ####### is actually kind of clever.

About to buy XCOM 2. Any tips/suggestions? I've never played an XCOM game before.

Edit: Nevermind Sony won't let me buy it. Something wrong with my credit card info, even though I'm using PayPal and haven't changed anything since the last time I bought something.

That sucks.

On XCom, normally I'd say patience is the key but they really changed it up for XCom 2. Before it was about the human squad going in and eliminating all aliens but you had as much time as you wanted to do it. XCom 2 the humans are the rebel forces fighting a guerilla war against the occupying aliens. So you only get so many turns to complete the objective. Stealth is also a factor now too. Really changed up the dynamic.

Thanks. Maybe it's good I wasn't able to get it then. I was looking for a slower strategy game. I liked the idea of building up soldiers and a slow, methodical approach to wiping out the enemy.

Try the first XCom (2012) then. You have as much time in the turn based encounters as you want to eliminate the enemy. Some battles require a specific objective to be done (disarm the bomb, save the VIP etc) but for the most part it's fly in, kill all aliens before they kill you. Then you go back to base and research, manufacture and maintain surveillance on the world. Really 2 strategy games in one.

Awesome. Thank you.

Going to have to amend my top 20 to get Greatest Heavyweights (Gen) in there.

I hooked up my modded Wii last night and I've been playing 25-year-old games ever sinse !

FYI apparently we've been able to preload Gears 4 since 9/27. Just have to uninstall the placeholder and reinstall. 54gb.

Cracked open the new Deus Ex.

I really want to love these games but something seems to bother the crap out of me in them. Maybe it's the too many things I have to remember to actually do something. Games can have too many options IMO.

I hope it's worth it to stick with it.

Xcom 2012 was a great game but the ability to overwatch creep like you're describing made the late game too easy in many ways. Other than the big space ship missions, you could spend the late game moving up tiny little amounts every turn, going into overwatch and just wiping out most of the enemy pods when they stumbled upon you. That strategy went out the door for the most part in Xcom 2. And honestly, that's a good thing. The late game in Xcom 2 (unless you use mods to make it harder) is basically a victory lapm once you have plasma rifles, a decent psionc soldier and emp bombs (to do major damage or disable gatekeepers and sectopods) it's pretty hard to lose. You either need to get insanely unlucky or make just an abysmal tactical decision to be in any danger of a squad wipe. To me, thats no fun.

The timed missions in Xcom2 are balanced and you can still play tactically 90% of the time. Yeah, occasionally you'll get unlucky with a bad map or something but that's part of the game. I feel like the people who complain about them are the types that just want to roll through the game without any real challenge

On the fence about getting this - I get to play maybe 5 hours of games a month these days...I JUST bought FIFA, mainly b/c I didn't know XCOM 2 was even out.  I love the strategy and the ability to think through how to attack from the old one...I'm worried it's going to be too much change in this one...

I'm about halfway through and I'm struggling to stick with it. I loved the last one, but for some reason this one just isn't holding my interest in the same way. Normally I'd keep a game like this to play any story based DLC, but as soon as I finish it, this is getting traded in.

XCOM2 is a fantastic follow-up to the XCOM (2012).  The timed missions and the DLC additions make the game a bit more difficult and force you to consider timing of some mission paths.  TLEF is right that there is a tipping point where your team can overwhelm the aliens.  I haven't played in a while but felt that that happened a bit later than the original XCOM (especially if you just relied purely on Overwatch strikes on new enemy forces found).

I liked it because it was difficult at first but that struggle slowly wears off as you get used to the new game.  However, the new DLC adds some content that is downright frustrating (and awesome) and really can make a mess of those timed missions.

I agree which is probably why they made the change in the first place. Keep it from getting stale.

However, for a person just starting out, XCom 2012 is the better way to guy I think.

I liked it a lot. The thing to remember is to pick a playstyle and stick with it. If you want to be an armored Rambo, do all upgrades for that. If you want to be a silent non-kill dude, do that. Don't try and do both.

I found the stealth / no kill route to be the most fun. Upgrade legs/jump asap - that allows you to get more places. Takedowns take energy - I forgot that a few times and would wind up behind someone waiting for my bar to refill.

Hacking was useful too - I found getting access to level 3 to be enough (especially with the stealth upgrades). Anything higher I just used a multitool on. Remote hacking is essential, too.

I think I find the hacking thing to be unnecessarily confusing and not fun. I don't WANT to understand how it works nor do I want to get good at it.

Don't take this the wrong way, but this probably isn't the game for you, then. Lots of side-stories in the hacks, and it makes everything much easier, as well as gives you access to more areas/stuff. You could probably play without hacking just by using multi-tools on the pertinent ones, but you'll have to save/load a lot to figure out which ones are really necessary, because you won't have enough of them to go around. You don't want to waste tools just to get some crafting parts and ammo.

It's pretty easy, really, and I found it fun once I "got" it. Take a path from blue to green (and ignore anything but going to the green ones). Each "stop" on your path gives the AI (the red part) a certain chance to notice you. If it does, you only have so much time to finish (or you can bail and try again). It also truly rewards points taken in the hacking stealth (less of a chance to notice you).

Agreed. If someone is new to the series, jumping into Xcom 2 would likely be a poor decision. Better to buy the first one (get Enemy Within rather than Enemy Unknown) and get accustomed to the mechanics.

Lots of people (even people that claimed to be good Xcom 1 players) complained that 2 was too difficult. I wouldn't agree with that. Its a challenging game, but that's not because the mechanics are unfairly challenging. Its more about the luck aspect of things and your squad being so fragile in the early game. I've started an absurd amount of Xcom 2 play throughs but many of them only lasted a few missions. When your entire squad is a bunch of sniveling rookies, 1 bad dice roll can basically ruin things for you. And the first mission is 99% luck once you learn the very basic mechanics of flank and avoid getting flanked. I've quit in the middle of it well over 100 times when I know I'm on the road to losing.

I have been looking forward to this Mafia 3 game. Didn't play the first two but this one looks pretty good. It comes out pretty soon too. October 7th.

Is there much of a difference between NBA 2K16 and NBA 2K17, particularly regarding the franchise mode?

So... why does Rocket League suck so bad on Xbox One?  The frame rate is so terrible, it's nearly unplayable.  Has it always been this way?

No. it was great, but the new play mode they introduced last month ####ed everything up. One that patch went in, everything went to hell, my ping went up, and frame rate went down.

They claimed to have fixed it but I've gone into other forums and people think I'm lying if I say nothing is fixed for me.

My ping never changed.  It was around 28-32.  But my frames went in the toilet.  Felt like I was playing on an old slide projector.  It was even worse if someone was spamming quick chat.  I read a hotfix to hard reset the system before playing Rocket League for better performance.  I'll try, but that's not really very reassuring.

anyone playing Mafia 3 yet? initial reviews-in-progress tout a pretty solid story, but threw minor shade at the mechanics.

Probably don't have time to start another game, but it looks intriguing.

There's been a lot of bad press coming since that game was released. I'm kinda intrigued, but have Battlefield preloaded and ready to go and I only get one game at a time. I'm not too big on flopping back and forth, I inevitably only play one and never touch the other.

I think with most single player games it's probably best to wait awhile before buying. Let the bugs great fixed. MP games are better to buy day one so you aren't behind the curve.

100% that... I'll grab it from a Xmas sale, or maybe shortly after, for $30

I am moving the late-mid-game or end-game part now.  I have a decent number of maxed-out heroes, but I am still working on promoting more because I need a total of 16 (at least) to finish the game.  And that requires a lot of gold, so I'm also doing low-level runs with disposable guys fresh off the stagecoach for coin.  So basically I'm doing "loot runs" to pay for "ranking up" runs so I have a good stable of guys for "darkest dungeon" runs.

If this sounds grindy, it definitely is.  But I really enjoy the gameplay, including the metagame, so I have no problems with the grind.  Just my two cents.

Agreed, I'm still waiting for a sale to play the last tomb raider game.

I know it has been out for a few years but I just decided to pick up south park: the stick of truth.  Never played any sort of traditional turn based rpg but since I'm such a big fan of the show I decided to give it a shot.

Great game. They obviously nailed the feel of the show perfectly and it is hilarious.  Not sure how the combat elements compare to other games in the genre but I really don't care. If you're a fan of the show and haven't played, you're missing out

Not a huge difference, but there are some interesting tweaks:

  • Picks can be traded with lottery, top 3, top 5, top 10 protection (which makes trading with bad teams for their picks harder during the season).
  • You can work in expansion to the franchise, I don't think that was an option before.
  • One added step for the off season is own meetings.  The CPU will generate some rule changes the owners vote on.  You can override their vote to allow, or reject any of the changes.  Some of the votes I've seen are: bringing in an expansion team, removing the shot clock, changing the time limit to get over the time line, changing the three second call to five seconds, stuff like that.
  • Free agent period is longer (more days).
It's not a huge change to the experience, but it just about everything new is an upgrade.

I'm still working on the actual game play.  Needing to "time" you shot on the layup is my single biggest frustration, but I'm also still working on the timing for shooting three pointers.  The defensive AI might have been improved, because scoring for me is a lot tougher than on the previous game.

Couldn't agree more. I'm not a turn based RPG in any way, but I absolutely loved this game. Can't wait for the sequel next year!

They were surprisingly good, but you got too OP too quickly.
I'm sort of worried about this. I had  a few pretty tough battles early on (mostly due to me not knowing how all the mechanics worked) but now that I'm  on the 2nd day, a lot of the battles are  getting really easy. Started on normal difficulty but may bump it up to hard.

I don't mind being OP, I think it's more fun than getting thrashed constantly. The only thing I didn't like about combat in that game was the summoning. You can only summon each friend once per day in the game, so it feels like you shouldn't use them unless you need them. But you can't summon during boss battles, and you don't really need it in any other battle. I went the whole game not summoning once.

I swear I saw trackmania on Xbox One on sale for $20 this afternoon.  Went to go buy it and now its $40.

Even though Ive got Battlefield 1 available in 2 days, I was going to pick it up for a fun racer but not for $40.

Just got started on XCOM2 and it seems much better but harder than 1.  Was shocked how easy it was to get killed right off the bat.
