Video games...what ya playing? And what are you looking forward to? (2 Viewers)

### #### it, you are killing me.  :(

This is what I always dreamed of when playing a game as I am an uber RPG nerd, and yet I am almost certain I would get severe headaches very quickly (I can't view 3D movies for example with out searing pain).
Of all the games I've played, this one is the one I could see causing people motion sickness issues. There are a lot of different movement options built in to help mitigate it, so it was clearly a concern. I hated the teleportation movement, but that's the default option presumably because it is probably the least likely to cause problems. The smooth turning, however, I felt could be a problem. It turns rather quickly and having your view whip around while you remain stationary is potentially problematic. I went to snap turning and so far that's worked best for me.

If you have big problems with 3D movies, this could cause you problems as well. I'd try it before you buy it. But if you can handle it, wow. It's exactly what you (and I) always dreamed an RPG might someday be.

For the VR, I've always been intrigued but thought it was more of a gimmick.  Is this VR close to actually making you feel like you're in the game?  How long do you play for?  Is this really a technological leap forward?

Oh yes. I play for anywhere from a half hour to 2 hours at a clip, usually because I start to get sweaty after a while in the headset. I tend to run hot, though - YMMV.

It's not a gimmick. It's a huge leap forward. The next step is going to be crystal clear HD inside the headset, there's still something of a "screen door" effect in the view, and the graphics aren't as razor sharp as they are on screen playing a regular PS4 game on the Pro with a high res TV. This is first-generation hardware. It doesn't faze me at all, though - the feeling of complete immersion (use quality over-ear headphones with it to get the full effect, this is key) is completely unlike playing a game on a TV.

If you're on the fence, there have to be stores like Best Buy that will have demo models set up in store, if they don't already exist. Try it for 5 minutes, that's enough to know if you'll be blown away by the experience or if it isn't for you. Won't matter all that much what the game is, everyone I plug into the thing, whether it's my 10 year old niece, 43 year old wife, or 73 year old mother, has asked me when they can come back and try it again.

Last bit, even though I mentioned it before, get some decent headphones to use with it. I got a perfectly solid set of over ear Sennheiser headphones for about 40 bucks. The audio component, and blocking out any background noise in your house, is absolutely crucial to total immersion. Failing this, at least plug ear buds into the unit and use those rather than your speakers when playing. It's night and day when the sound is in your ear rather than in the air.

I thought of this and do have a set of over the ear headphones but what do they plug into?  I know the regular controller has a headphone output but never tried it.  I don’t know how it works with the move controllers though.

So I can’t handle the 3D movies either... at all. I’ve tried twice and spent half the movie with my eyes closed looking at the floor. My little brother has a Vive and I’ve played around with it and not had any trouble. Now these weren’t 4 hour gaming sessions, but I had it on for 20-30 mins at a time and my only real issue is sweating. I’d say give it a try.

The switch attached to the headset that you use to turn it on/off has a headphone jack.

Life is Strange: Before The Storm is only $6 as a digital download on Amazon right now.

I enjoyed the first game.

So picking up a new steering wheel this weekend.

Do I go VR first or new console first....

Not sure I can pull off both.....

Ps4 -

Thinking of getting the PRO to take full advantage.

So I assume my answer is to get VR for now
I'm getting the VR now since it works with it now.  If I feel it's not good enough quality then maybe next year I'll upgrade to the Pro.  As for now I just don't see enough benefits to buy the PS4 Pro.

Thanks makes sense

Yeah - I just read some reviews that it really doesn't justify me buying one unless I'm 4K - which I'm not.

So that question is now answered .......

Not pulling the trigger........yet

Thinking of getting a VR bundle. Any advice?

Figured the one with the controllers made sense, though prefer full modding ability for Skyrim.

Dumb question that I could probably Google

if I get the VR version of a game can I play it like a regular game if I'm not in the mood to use VR?

I ordered the Skyrim bundle on Amazon.  Looks like it includes everything I need and was $100 off then I got another $70 for signing up for Amazon's Visa card.

Did you remember to use smile.amazon.com and have your proceeds to go the "Chance for Hope" foundation!??!?

I'm not sure how bad it is for the eyes, but I kinda look forward to not having to play on a TV. Even if it's not VR, being able to play games portable-y without a monitor/TV will be great. Maybe shrink the console down to the size of a paperback novel too.

Also to all the pubg guys. New patch is going to add two new weapons. Finally a lmg world spawn is being added. Going to start playing again when it's released.

Is VR only PlayStation or Xbox as well?
Playstation only.  If I have it right, you need the Playstation itself, and then the VR headset, and the camera to detect when you're turning or the like.  You can also use the Move controllers for control so you can swing your arm to swing your sword in Skyrim, etc.  There is also a Move gun-shaped one that is bundled with... Farpoint?

Some people have the camera already so may not want to do a bundle.  Some bundles include the headset, camera and a game.  Others include the headset, camera, 2 Move controllers and a game. The 2 Move controllers stand alone are a little under $80 unless you find a good sale, but only $50 to get them in the bundle.

The only ones I know of are the PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.  The Rift and Vive require a pretty serious PC setup I believe and are twice as much but I hear the PQ is better.
This is exactly what the two guys I talked to at the store said.  One had PS VR, the other uses Oculus Rift with his PC.   They both agreed Rift has the better graphics, though it's going to be graphics card dependent.  They said you can download a little app for PC to tell you how well your machine can handle Rift.

I think I'm still going PS VR at this point, both for price and as I don't have a lot of room right now for VR in front of my PC, but I do with in front of my PS4 in the living room.  My gaming PC can probably handle Rift fine now, but I'm going to upgrade the graphics cards next year anyway.  So think I'll put off Rift until then, hope the price comes down a bit more, and it'll give me time to clean out my home office the PC is in.

Exactly this. I think those also have multiple cameras for room scale so you can move around and play, but that doesn't really interest me.

Here's the tool from Oculus to check your system to see if it'll work with Rift.  https://support.oculus.com/1357437467617798/

Using the Oculus Compatibility Check Tool

Before you buy an Oculus Rift, we recommend you run the Oculus compatibility check tool to check to make sure your PC computer can power the full Rift experience.

To run the Rift compatibility check tool:

Go to https://ocul.us/compat-tool to download the compatibility check tool

Open the tool and click Start

Tool Results

After running the compatibility check tool, it’ll tell you if your computer:

Meets or exceeds the recommended system specifications. If your computer meets or exceeds the recommend system specs, you should be able to power the full Rift experience.

Meets or exceeds the minimum system specs. If your computer meets or exceeds the minimum system specs, you should be able to run the Rift, but you may come across problems that we won’t be able to fix.

Doesn’t meet the minimum system specs. If your computer doesn’t meet the minimum system specs, you may not be able to run the Rift at all. If you still decide to buy a Rift, we won’t be held responsible if the Rift doesn’t work on your computer.

Any suggestions on games to get for PS VR to have something to play from the start?  Will probably get the Skyrim bundle as I believe the other one is a horror game which I'm not much into, but won't do much more than experiment with the VR in Skyrim.

I have a game called Adrift (sort of like the movie Gravity but without much action) that I think supports VR.  Think that's it right now.

I’ve got this preordered for 12/12 on my Xb1X. I know it won’t be the same as PC, but I’m looking forward to it. In the meantime, I still love me some Fortnite.  They’ve really done a great job with it.

Until Dawn: Rush of Blood has good reviews and is only $20 but it's a scary, rail shooter type of game.  RIGS Mechanized Combat League was a game I saw that got some great reviews and it's $30.

Rigs looks like I might like it, though if it's all just multi-player battles I might tire of it.   Eve: Valkyrie is one someone mentioned to me awhile back I may check out.  I like flying games so looks up my alley, though again, I hope it has more than just multi-player battles.

One youtube video on general tips when getting PS VR, suggested not getting any games at first.  Said there's like 18 free things (hopefully not outdated info) and you can get a chance with them to see how your body handles VR, if you get motion sickness, etc, before you sink money into games.

Think I'll do that... if there's demos, plus Skyrim in the bundle, and Adrift, and see how it goes.

So how's the 3D pron?

Asking for a friend.
No experience there. A Reddit thread piqued my interest right after I got it, but apparently Sony makes it difficult by not allowing certain types of 3D video (specifically side-by-side 360 video) to play, meaning you had to download videos to a thumb drive and then install some app on the PS4 as a workaround. Seemed like too much work. This was a year ago, so it may have long since been "solved," I don't know.

What are some of the good sandlot games coming up?

I'm definitely getting Days Gone next year. A Zombie sandlot game, what's not to like?

Big fan of Fallout, have played the last four over and over. Not into MMO. Far Cry was ok but not as good as Fallout. Hated the interface on Witcher 3

As one who doesn't play online and likes co-op play with my son...I'm not liking Battlefront 2 at all.

The maps are smaller than BFS, the gameplay is too frenetic, and aiming is a total chore.

But I'm an atypical gamer.

GTA5 turns open world pretty quickly and I really enjoyed the single player campaign.

Beat Mario Odyssey tonight. Really fun game to play especially with the kids. Probably the easiest Mario game I can remember but still incredibly fun.

It’s pretty easy to beat the story or whatever you want to call it but if you go back and try to get all moons some of them are pretty tough. I really loved this game.

I picked up Splatoon 2 on a whim earlier this week and I’m mad at myself for not buying it earlier. Tons of fun.

I’m completely in love with the switch. I thought the handheld aspect was a bit of a gimmick and that I’d never use it but it’s amazing to be able to play in bed, or on a plane, or on my lunch break at work, etc. I have barely touched my PS4 since I got the switch

Downloading Stardew Valley right now. From everything I’ve read this thing has the potential to take over my life.

Best switch games out now? Just bought one for the kids (11 & 14). Picked up zelda and mario odyssee. Looking for multi player so both can play it at the same time. Considering splatoon 2 as well. Am i missing any?

Last of Us remastered $10 at GameStop.  Horizon Zero Dawn $20 but sold out already.  How do you sell out before Black Friday even starts?

I’m much more interested in the new map than the new weapons. I think a smaller map will make for better game opening.
