Video games...what ya playing? And what are you looking forward to? (2 Viewers)

Last of Us remastered $10 at GameStop.  Horizon Zero Dawn $20 but sold out already.  How do you sell out before Black Friday even starts?
HZD is also $20 at Best Buy and in-stock. No idea when I'll have time to play it, but pulled the trigger based on the acclaim here.

Thanks, ordered.

After waffling on which game to go with, I grabbed the PS VR Skyrim bundle. Picked it up at the GameStop a block over.

Pretty trippy. I'm going to need to get a chair for the living room... sitting comfortably on my couch is about 3' too far, and I have to sit way forward uncomfortably for the camera to pick me up well.

Tried a bit of Skyrim just using the regular controller. Mixed feelings. It is very cool to be looking around at everything like that.  However the resolution leaves a lot to be desired.  Faces are pretty blurry until I get within about 6-10 feet of them, compared to what I'm used to on PC.   I switched it from teleporting me forward in chunks when I move, to having it move smoothly like walking. I guess that makes some people queezy but it was fine for me.  I can pretty much circle strafe with the controller then like normal, but have to use my head to look up and down. That's going to take a little retraining of the body and I kept trying to use the thumbsticks to look up/down.  Right now I'm pretty slow just moving around a room and looting things as you have to turn your head to everything to move the cursor over it.  I'm sure I'd get better with practice.

Only real major complaint is the lack of resolution. Wondering how hard it is going to be to tell raiders from villagers, etc.

Also I was letting the Move controllers charge and just using the normal controller. Looking forward to trying those and shooting a bow with them, casting magic spells in two directions (think you can do that anyway), etc.  I went Imperial after the dragon showed up, and was using fire on the rebels in the tower then, just holding down the button and moving my head around to aim.

After an hour of it, I was definitely ready for a little bit of a break.  I was standing the whole time which didn't help, a leg pressed to a coffee table so I didn't start wandering RL.  Will wheel my office chair out here next time.

Downloading this Playroom VR now, and have the demo disk to try as well.

Edit to add:  Probably should have read the reviews first, they are saying much the same about resolution and such, but I guess when you switch to Move controllers you have to teleport.  http://metro.co.uk/2017/11/21/the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim-vr-review-fantasy-reality-7095099/

You don't. There's regular locomotion with the Move. Only problem is that you walk the direction you're facing, so backpedaling in REALLY awkward in combat. So much so that I usually stick to the DS4

I know EA has been beat up pretty good, but I'm going to be a sucker and buy Battlefront Star Wars II for my kids for Christmas.  They don't play online, really just beat the tar out of each other.  Are there any BF deals?

Also, about 20 hours into Mass Effect Andromeda.  Forgot how monotonous the talking to everybody can be, but its a really fun game so far.  B+

Best switch games out now? Just bought one for the kids (11 & 14). Picked up zelda and mario odyssee. Looking for multi player so both can play it at the same time. Considering splatoon 2 as well. Am i missing any?
Splatoon 2 is NOT a split screen co-op. Know that before you buy it. That was my mistake. It is only 1 player per switch to play online multiplayer. If you wanted to play against your kids, you'd need multiple switches.

Couldn't pass up some of the deals at Best Buy. Picked up the latest Uncharted and Mass Effect. Had a $15 certificate, so it was only $23 total shipped to the house. I also got a free gift!!! (Can anyone tell me WTF this is?)

Mass Effect - Andromeda Best Buy Exclusive SteelBook

My annual black friday haul of Games I Sort of Forgot About:

Dragon Age Inquisition: $10

Nier Automata: $25

The Evil Within 2: $25

Bioshock Collection: $15

That should hold me over until summer,

Instead of a plastic box to store your game you now have a metal box.

Also, how is it possible that 2017 is winding down and we still don't have a current-gen Dark Souls remaster?  That seems like it would be a no-brainer, and it's strange that it hasn't happened.

If you're a gamer, I would highly suggest checking out this post and using the form linked there to contact your representatives and urge them to do something to protect Net Neutrality. If Net Neutrality gets taken down, you can pretty much guarantee that your costs to access online gaming services is going to go up considerably.

I have both. NA wasn't my type of game but people swear by it. I found it boring. EW2 was great. Better than the first imo but not as scary.
I never played the first. Last (only?) horror type game I played was the Dead Space series back on the PS3, which I really enjoyed. Oh, and Last of Us. Is it a Last of Us type of feel?

This is a very important issue. Thank you for the post and link.

I had never played Bioshock until I got that collection a few months ago.  Really enjoyed the first one.  Haven't gotten to the others yet.

I would say it's a poor man's version of last of us as it has ammo scarcity, stealth, and scavenging similar but worse story and graphics.

Just bought Resident Evil 7 to try out with the VR.  Was going to get Batman but was disappointed when I read a review and there's no combat in it.

I read the Batman game is only like an hour and a half.  They said it looked cool and felt awesome being Batman but just wasn't worth the price of the game.

Yes, that's the gist I got from the review.  The RE7 review sounded better, even though that's not really my favorite game franchise.

I tried this free Playroom VR game last night.  The one I did was sort of a 3D take on Mario Brothers where you are floating along above the little robot you're controlling. It was ok, certainly immersive as there were times I forgot I wasn't there in the game.

I see what EG meant about Skyrim and "walking" with the Move controllers.  You can move forward or left/right by hitting the button and pointing that way a little.  But to back up you have to point it up towards the sky.  You definitely won't be able to use that hand to cast with if backing away since you can't point with it then.  I need to try the teleport movement with them still.

Even though it has a single player campaign, offline and co-op multiplayer is pretty limited.   The game's been out only a week, but with all the backlash, you might be able to find a 50% off deal before Christmas.  I still enjoy the game.  Transactions are still turned off, so they haven't hurt anyone yet.

I think it really regularly sells for like 15 to $20 now
I thought I saw it for $20.  The review I watched said it wasn't worth that.  Only takes an hour and a half to complete the game and it doesn't have any replay value.  I think they said it's barely worth $10.

After watching a couple reviews, I decided to pick up Battlestar Gallactica Deadlock ($30 right now on Steam).  Looks like a pretty fun turn-based strategy game that is a tribute to the series.  Hope its as fun as it looks.

interested to hear about that.  Love me some BSG.

So I decided to buy a PS4 today (already have 3 xbox 1s in the house)  mainly to play MLB and a couple other PS4 exclusives.  I figured for $199 why not.  Unfortunately it got stolen along with my phone (just bought last week) and everything else we bought shopping today.   :kicksrock: On the plus side, they didn't break any windows, they went through the door and got the lock.    Tried to buy online after we got home but of course everyone is sold out now. Guess I wasn't meant to play PS4.

Finally started Bloodborne this evening. I forgot that feeling of being in the Dark Souls universe. I should have made my character's name "DeadLots."

Aw man. Sorry to hear it. :(

Your ps4 was stolen the same day you bought it? Did they follow you home from buying it?

Probably an Xbox fanboy stole it amirite?

I tried to get one of the PS4 for $199 plus a $50 Gamestop gift card deals, but they were sold out by the time we got there.  May still end up buying one for $199 to play some of the PS-exclusive games.

True.  I wonder if car insurance would cover that?
Unfortunately where we were parked was just out of the range of cameras.  Mall security said there were 4 other cars broken into at the mall.  Called car insurance (progressive) while we were waiting for the police to arrive.  Car insurance does not cover it, they said to turn it in under homeowners.  Other people have also said homeowners.  Unfortunately the carrier of our homeowners is closed for the weekend so I won't be able to find out until Monday.

You said they went through the door. Were the packages in the back seat rather than the trunk? I see this mistake a lot. Of course the trunk isn't an option if it is an SUV or whatever. Was talking with a vehicle theft detective about two weeks ago and he said the thieves will case the lot and watch for folks carrying high value items. So even if it goes in the trunk, they just bust the window and pop the trunk that way. Best bet (not an option for you since you didn't leave) is to put packages in the trunk before you leave for the next place so that thieves where you are about to park can't see what you loaded up. Just a PSA for those still shopping.

We have a Buick Enclave, so unfortunately there is no trunk.  All of the packages were in the back of the vehicle.  Wife's and son's tablet were in the back seat, but they were covered up.  My cellphone was on the center console under the armrest, but was probably partially visible.  Not sure if there was anything different we could have done, only plus side is no damage was done to the vehicle.

On the brighter side of things, I just got a PS4 COD WW2 bundle on New Egg for $199 (same price as we paid, plus get COD).

Bought the remastered Dragon's Dogma for XB1. I had given it a go back in the 360 days, but it kind of got pushed aside when it didn't grab me right away. I'm glad I gave it another shot - this is a fantastic RPG.

The thing that really sets this game apart is you can not only switch professions easily, it's kind of encouraged, as each have unique skills and augments, and the augments carry over to other professions. Your "level" matters in hit points and such (and is all calculated automatically - no points to distribute), but it's your profession rank (1-10) that truly matters in getting new skills and upping your strength and magic/etc. Plus, you are constantly switching out 2 of your 3 party members (one stays with you the entire time), so you can really reconfigure your party. The AI is also excellent - you don't have to babysit them at all.

So you can be a 50th level character (say a Mystic Knight), and if you haven't been a mage yet, switch to a neophyte mage, change up your party a bit to compensate (swap out a mage for a tanky fighter) and you'll have the hit points and companions to make being a starting mage viable and fun. Up your mage a bit, get an augment or two that will be useful to the Mystic Knight you really want to be, and then switch back.

Once I figured out the leveling system and companions, it really clicked. It's not quite Souls in complexity, and It's not Skyrim in scale, but it is like a marriage of the two, with non-controllable companions thrown in. The combat is also a blast (figuratively and literally -  best spells and effects in any game ever).

Lot of great deals on Steam this weekend.  Picked up a few games for supercheap:

Warhammer 40k: Space Marine

Brigador

Vzerthos: Heir of Thunder

Bot Vice

24 dollars wew

So, Bloodborne. Once I realized I was playing a game that rewards aggression, and once I quit worrying about losing some souls, the game got easier. I cleared the first area somewhat quickly, though I did spend some time farming XP and the material that lets you upgrade weapons (Blood Gems?). Cleric Beast was a breeze, went down first try, and I think I only used one blood vial. Father Gascoigne on the other hand... Almost got him first time. Came up just short. Tries two, three and four, I got punked. I realized I had, once again, reverted to trying to heal rather than keeping up the pressure. Fifth try, I got him with three blood vials left to go. Onward and upward!

good stuff!

Remember the key is aggression after you have been hit.  You can still be as cautious as you want before you take any damage.

This game is a very worthy member of the Souls family.  Lots of great fun ahead of you. :)

No one here has PSVR?  Skyrim VR hitting my mailbox today and from what I've heard, it's an unparalleled gaming experience.  Serendipitously, I'm off work next week (coincidental) and the wife took a last minute week-long trip to Utah to see family, so I have the entire house to myself and no obligations other than putting up Christmas lights.  I'm giddy with anticipation.  Buying three pounds of cold cuts and 2 loaves of bread on the way so I don't have to leave the house for ANYTHING for 6 days.
So what's the verdict on Skyrim VR?

So what's the verdict on Skyrim VR?
I absolutely love it. Know going in (as I mentioned earlier) that the graphics are not as crisp as the PS4 remaster and you'll see the occasional odd artifact, etc, but I can't get enough of being "in" the game. It's a whole different game when a wolf or spider pops up and scares the #### out of you. Getting right up on NPCs and leaning forward until you're nose to nose and can see blood vessels in their eyes, little things that make you feel inside the game rather than watching.

One thing I don't like as much is that you can't see your own character. Makes customizing your appearance pointless.

I looked to see if the PSVR Skyrim bundle was cheaper today but it's back to regular price.  I did see that the Gran Turismo bundle is still available at $299.  Warning for those interested, the Gran Turismo bundle has the older version of headset included whereas the Skyrim bundle has the newest version.  Lots of complaints in the review section.

I'm the opposite, and gave up on the Skyrim VR version.  Other than the novelty, the game play is just bad compared to the normal one. :(

The visuals are ramped back about as far as they go. Lines are jagged and things are blocky. In the beginning part where you're escaping through the tower and caves, there are two coin pouches that didn't show on the screen at all though if I point my head to where they should be, it let me pick them up. Had I not played it so many times I knew where they were, there's no way I would have got them.  I normally finish the walk to the first village with an inventory full of potion ingredients I've picked along the way. I only had a few this time because the graphics were so bad I could only spot the most obvious of flowers, butterflies, etc.

I went back to PC and started a new character and played through the same stretch, and it was just so much more enjoyable with a crisp appearance.  Seeing details like the sunlight filtering through the trees and making shadows on the characters in the cart showed just how truly bad the VR's image was, where you are happy just to make out their facial features enough you could identify who they are.

As for other things... I tried the Playroom VR free download, played something that was like a 3d Legos or Mario Brothers.  It was ok. Visuals were great, game play was just ok.  I tried some 3D and 360 videos from LittleStar (a 3rd party media player) and from the Youtube app.  Some good ones, some not so much.  Apparently you can get the VR to handle Over-Under or possibly also Side-by-Side videos... I googled enough to see people had instructions but haven't gotten back to it to try it yet.  I picked up Resident Evil 7 which is supposed to be a much better VR implementation than Skyrim, but I haven't started it yet as I was playing with some other stuff with it.

As far as watching a 3D blu ray, the image quality isn't as good as on the TV.  But it's HUGE.  For someone with a smaller TV I could see using the VR to watch movies, Netflix, etc as it's like having a 100" or 120" TV.  I went back and forth watching stretches of Antman in 3D on my TV and on the VR, and I'd rather watch it on the TV for the crispness of the picture.  I could see someone preferring the sheer size of the VR image, but I guess I put my preference on clear, crisp images and colors.

I find getting the headset on right is kind of finicky.  If I get it JUST right then pretty much everything is in focus and clear.  But it takes a bit of adjusting for me to find that spot. Just close leaves the edges fuzzy, and white lettering will have rainbow effects in it sometimes.  (edit to add: I didn't find it for the first time until about the 5th time I'd used it, just thought it was always fuzzy at the edges.)   I'm sure as I use it more that part will get better.

If I had it to do over, I'd probably have gotten an Oculus Rift now rather than waiting until I upgrade my graphics cards next year.  Though I think there will be enough PS-only content I'll probably still get my money's worth out of the VR in the long run.  Will let you know how Resident Evil looks.

ETA:  I wonder if Skyrim VR visuals on the PS Pro is any better... it has better graphics processing doesn't it?  I'm still on my original PS4 as I don't have a 4k TV.
