Video games...what ya playing? And what are you looking forward to? (3 Viewers)

Somebody posted a video of Contra and I ended up watching it. I skipped through a lot mostly because I played it so much as a kid but I learned something new and I wondered about another question.

1. On the last level you can go extremely slowly to draw the enemies out. Ive always run-n-gun'd because I stayed in a rhythm but that was interesting. When they released it years ago for the Xbox360 I somehow pulled off a ridiculous score without even remotely trying or meaning to. At that time it placed me in the top 10 for some reason. I never even knew Contra kept track of a score and I was never even close to replicating despite having what I would consider substantially better runs.

2) How in the F did they not get sued for straight up stealing the entire last level from the Aliens movies?

Just started Anthem on PS4 last night.  It's gonna be a very unproductive weekend.  I'll report back with thoughts!

For Dark Souls fans (or anyone really) interested in The Surge, it's $15 right now for Xbox Gold members for the next few days. Includes all the DLC's, etc.

I've always looked at this game with interest, but never got it. But I'm bored with what I'm playing now, and no new releases interest me enough to pay full price for (I will buy Metro Exodus at some point), so I got this - seems like a good buy on a very well-reviewed game. Looking forward to diving into this over the weekend.

Different time. Hard to prove.

It looks like Microsoft Gamepass and also at least two direct first party ports (Ori & Cuphead) are coming to the Switch this year. Currently a rumor, but verified by several industry insiders.

I’m tempted. Is the combat fluid?  I tried Lords of the Fallen and didn’t have fun at all.

I do have ave a gift card, but at this moment I was just hanging on til Sekiro.

I won't be booting up until later tonight, but check out some video reviews. Supposedly, it's rock solid / fluid / etc. The review I linked to mentions heavy weapons are much better than Lords

Past month I've been burning a couple quick games out of the way to clear out my backlog a bit. Watch Dogs and Mirror's Edge: Catalyst. Catalyst was actually a pretty fun game for $4 lol. Very different, parkour based game running around the city and such. Very refreshing change of pace game tbh. Just beat that last night.

Today! I'm 6 years late but better late than never. Excited to finally play The Last of Us.

Loooooove The Last of Us. Stay away from spoilers - great story.

Yep. Same thing with me going. From FC2 to FC3. Stupid tower climbs!

I did get FC5 about a month ago cause I was Jonesing for some mindless FPS action but more because of the arcade feature (player created maps and scenarios). Absolute fantastic. I play with a buddy occasionally and we just do random maps and they are a blast.

I only played the SP enough tp unlock the arcade. Took almost an hour! One of my biggest pet peeves is stupid tutorials that are forced onto you. I love nothing more than being thrown into a sandbox with no hand holding but those games are super rare.

TL/DR - Far Cry 5 arcade mode is a blast with friends.
I am a Far Cry series fan.

Far Cry Primal for me was such a great experience. I went all Marc Singer Beastmaster on that game. Sunk 50 plus hours into it.....and still have some stuff to collect. And they have a survival mode which I want to do another play through with.

I loved FC4 and 5 as well. Different stories, different maps. Mindless fun.

It's definitely closer to "Sci-Fi Souls" than Lords of the Fallen. I found Lords slow and clunky - this one isn't.

I'm not that far in, but far enough to get a good feel for the game. It's verymuch like Souls in lots of ways. You sort of level up (increase your power core), but there are no real stats to raise. Instead,  there are implants that augment your vitals and abilities, and that's how you build out your character. You can also craft/upgrade weapons and armor by using pieces you sever from enemies. There's also Tech Scrap you get from enemies, which works the same as Souls (except here you can thankfully bank them at camp).

The combat is fairly fast and very fluid / responsive, you need to manage stamina and dodge, etc, and there's a targeting system where you want to target unprotected areas (or target areas with a piece that you want to sever to get the weapon/gear). Different weapon classes have different movesets, etc, same as Souls. The map is also very Souls-like where it circles back on itself with clever shortcuts.

It's fun, and definitely worth the $15, especially if you're a Souls fan.

I'm now on my eighth playthrough of RE2 -- Claire A Hardcore. This game has insane replay value.  I basically have it memorized at this point, but there's just enough variety across the four scenarios to keep it kind of fresh.  You can also blast through it in a relatively short time frame once you know what you're doing.  I did a start-to-finish hardcore run with Leon A yesterday in about 2:45 of game time (longer in real time because I had a few deaths/restarts).

All I have left after this are a couple of challenge runs that will be different but don't figure to be too bad (no healing items, no item box) and the Hunk bonus mission.

Yea I've beat 5 times now. Working on Leon A hardcore. Been doing the ghost survivors and hunk/tofu missions a lot. Hunk I'm down to 7:50 mins. I beat Tofu and Konjac. Still 3 other tofus to do (Flan, Uiro-Mochi, Annin Tofu) and the No way out scenario. Not really enjoying that one. It's basically horde mode in the gas station with the cop that gets eaten at the beginning of the game. Have to kill 100 zombies of varied types in that small space.

This is my favorite game of the last 5 years.

I feel like I've beaten FO4 to a bloody pulp. I really can't think of anything remaining to do. So now I need to break down and start something new, which I am always hesitant to do for some reason. Anyways, line up in the drawer is

Dark Souls 3
Dishonored 2
God of War
Uncharted (last one with the ladies)

I think that's it for my choices. Though I have the nagging feeling there may be one more option up there...

I’ll always vote for Dark Souls 3. Play the DLC too, especially The Ringed City.

It doesn't seem like Primal was as well-received but I loved it. Probably my favorite of all of them. People really missed the guns but I really enjoyed throwing spears like a caveman.

Have you played the New Dawn expansion?

Well, looks like it just hit my price point. Lowest I've seen previously was 30. Gamestop here I come. Thanks for the heads up!

So I'm about 15 hours in.  So far it's very fun but I have not reached the end game content yet.  My worry is that there's not going to be anything to do once reaching end game and I'll sit on my thumbs for 4 months waiting for an expansion.

I'm probably around the same point as you. Hopefully they refine the loot chase by the time we reach end game.

I don't think it will take 4 months for new content, though. From what I understand they're going to trickle out content every few weeks, not go the every 4 months expansion route.

But even if there is a bit of waiting time, there's always other games!!

No I am waiting for the discount bin for that one.

Expansion?

Do you need FC5 to play/install it? I gave my FC5 away after I finished it.

Well I think of it as an expansion because it's somewhat smaller than a full far cry game, is nearly a direct continuation of 5, and is not full priced. But no it doesn't require 5 to play or install.

From what I've read, the content was already part of the game. They had them hold a bunch back from launch so they can "trickle it out" in the coming weeks to look like they've been working on new stuff.

That could be the case. EA is certainly known for their shenanigans. However, people say that about almost every big budget game these days so I never know what's true anymore.

This one was better than 4

Finished LoTR: Shadow of War

I enjoyed it overall and particularly liked the siege and siege defense aspects, and appreciated they added several siege defenses to the post game before giving up the epilogue.  However the epilogue did leave me feeling a little flat.

I like the nemesis system, it wasn't perfect but definitely added depth that you don't see in other games and some of the captains were positively brutal.  I had an overlord who was an arrow proof, beast proof vault breaker with determination (plus a bunch of other things) so I gotta get in close on this guy, can't use all my evasion have to press my attack so he doesn't heal himself AND he has endless swarms of minions spawning because he's a siege mission overlord.  It was positively brutal. Thankfully he didn't have iron will so I was able to dominate him and make him my bodyguard.

I hope the series will continue despite the epilogue.

South Park the Fractured but Whole ( :lmao:  it took me waaaaaay too long to get that one).

It's funny. Just like watching the show it has terrific comedy.  However, so far the game play is falling kinda flat.  Seems more like I am doing missions just to get to the funny parts.  I never play games hoping for more cut-scenes.  Still, it's worth it for the comedy factor alone.

Loooooove The Last of Us. Stay away from spoilers - great story.
Gahhh, just finished it this afternoon!

Damn. As far as story, it's right up there with RDR2/Life is Strange.

I love Ellie. I have no children at the moment, but me playing thru that game as Joel, is the closest I've ever felt to the responsibility of being a father in my life lol. Just feeling that duty to protect her and keep her safe, man that s### was real. Like if something was hurting her, I didn't care if I had 3 guys on me with 1 bar of health left, I'd sprint across the map and beat the crap out of whatever was attacking her.

Now it's over and I just feel empty...

Did you play her DLC, Left Behind? Not much, but it focuses on her.

Anyone have experience with Black Desert? Saw it on the Xbox marketplace. I prefer the graphics of this mmo to that of wow and neverwinter so it peaked my interest

The new one is supposed to come out this year but haven't think they set a date yet. Can't wait for that one. They released some gameplay.

I'm also a big Far Cry fan.  Just finished New Dawn and loved it.  I felt it may be the best of the bunch (far cry 3 was my previous favorite)  They added "expeditions" which are great.   There's probably not as much new new ground to cover but the ones that are there are excellent.  There are 10 outposts and 6-8 expeditions after you liberate the outposts you can let the bad guys reclaim them and liberate them again for higher rewards and each time the defenses get tougher.  Same with the expeditions.   The Antagonists/story isn't great and the ending was kinda lame but I don't care much about that stuff anyway.

Highly recommend.

I kept seeing previews for this on steam about a year or two and was more than interested. My PC could never run something like that so I never looked to far into it.

The reviews weren’t so hot then but maybe it’s changed. The game looks absolutly stunning.

I ended up playing New Dawn the past couple of weeks with my GF. It's a bit short compared to the others in the series but that was expected with the price tag. One of the other best new features besides what you mentioned is that sawblade gun. Awesome. My only real complaint would be the inability to see what the hell is going on during the final boss battle. Thought that was a cheap cheat tactic by the devs.

Anyway I'm really glad they added the co-op feature. We had so much fun that we already started on 5.

Do they still have those stupid cutscene scenarios that they force you to go through?

You mean those out-of-nowhere scenes where you inexplicably lose the ability to perform any normal action that your character has been doing the entire game? Yes.

I would have also listed those as a major complaint but since they're in every iteration of the game I'm basically numb to them at this point.

I heard the Level 1 gun you get at the start is the best gun for endgame content. :lmao:

Sounds like a loot system similar to Destiny, which I found unsatisfying.

It's apparently a glitch. It was a scaling attempt to help level 1 players keep up with higher level players if they get paired together but it's not working correctly. It will be patched probably.

Loot system is somewhat similar to Destiny but I'd put it more on the Diablo type loot system.  Tons of loot (actually managing all of the garbage is fairly cumbersome, they need a way to figure that out) and several different builds you can choose from.  I've played through the main storyline but not all of the side questlines and am still having lots of fun.
