Video games...what ya playing? And what are you looking forward to? (2 Viewers)

Unicorn Overlord consuming all my game time this last week. But I’m old and played Ogre Battle 64 so shouldn’t be a surprise how much I like this game.

Just started MLB the Show 23. I pretty much stay with Road to the Show. I might play around with other stuff but I like developing my player's hitting. I have never really played as a pitcher. Truth be told I don't wanna play every play. I like the hitting option cause I hit when due, and an occasional play from third base. I'm probably missing out on a lot of stuff?

I thought it was an excellent remake.

I have not heard of unicorn overlord and while I am not ready to start a 60-100+ hour tactical RPG right now, i will need to wishlist it tonight so i don't forget about it.

Still having fun with college football even though pass defense is basically impossible (no matter what scheme you play, DBs and LBs are just horrendous in coverage) and some pretty major immersion-breaking logic in dynasty in terms of award winners and all American teams.

It's a good frame work for future years but it's very obvious that they did ZERO testing in terms of simulated stats from other games and the logic for awards and all American teams. And it seems to be getting worse the further in you get. (I'm in season 7 and there were only 3 1,000 yard rbs in the whole country)

My starting RT (who is technically a guard but I played him at tackle) won the Outland trophy despite tearing a bicep in the 2nd game and missing the rest of the season. My starting corner won the Thorpe award but wasn't first or 2nd team AA or even first team all conference.

Doesn't really affect my enjoyment of the game but it just screams lazy.

Glad to hear that I'm not the only one who seems to be struggling to play defense.

I am really enjoying the recruiting part of the game though.

I buried over 100 hours of time into this game. I'm a strategy nerd so a lot of time gets spent in menus trying to optimize my equipment and tactics.

I've been playing on all American difficulty and keep moving the user pass defense sliders up (while moving other sliders in the other direction to make things harder for myself in other aspects of the game) but it doesn't seem to make much difference. I still give up 300 yards+ and over 80% completions almost every game. The AI just dinks and dunks me to death with passes inside 15 yards.

Man...zone....press...loose....shading inside or outside....disguising coverage...doesn't seem to matter. Man defenders always get beat off the line and zone defenders don't even bother covering a guy 2 yards away from them until it's too late.

Very annoying but I've adjusted the other aspects of the game so that it's still fun and competitive.

That part drives me nuts. Hook routes sits down in the zone. Linebacker seems like they just wait for the completion, then break for a tackle... after we give up the first down.

I can never seem to get off the field.

Sorry to be negative, but the framework will be the same as Madden - slight tweaks to an aging engine. The only reason CFB was so well-received this year is it's the first college game in forever.

Madden's pass D is awful this year. I'm astonished how bad it is. I played some of the 10 hour trial on gamepass, but deleted it - I'll stick with the Madden 24 they have up there now. I was ready to make my "every 3 year buy" this year too. Maybe next year.

Sure did, honestly think its better than FFTactics (potential fighting words I know). I picked up the remake and put like 80 hours in it but wound up getting distracted so didn't finish. The nice thing about UO is you can finish a map/scenario quickly (15-30 minutes), while every battle in Tactics Ogres is generally an hour.

Honestly, I'm more concerned about them fleshing out the dynasty mode with additional depth and QOL features. We'll see if they do that or just pivot to spending all their time on the online ultimate team microtransaction cash cow.

I'm confident gameplay will get marginally better after a few patches. But you're right.....pass defense is truly awful.

I am a min/maxer in video games and generally tactical RPG's really lend themselves to this style of gameplay. I have a platinum medal on tactics ogre reborn and by the end was just steamrolling anything story related/sidequest related. I think maps took me 10-15 minutes, but tons of prep work to get to that point.

That is why I can only play a tactical RPG every couple years.

Been playing the new WoW expansion and can safely say that Blizzard has put together two very good expansions in Dragonflight and The War Within to try to pull themselves out of a tailspin of misery.

Dragonflight introduced a ton of new mechanics and gameplay systems. The War Within now takes that further with some of the best art, music and questline design the team has ever produced as one cohesive package.

I couldn't believe I was leveling a character in WoW and having fun with it like I was these last two expansions. If they nail the max level content with improvements over Dragonflight (which was good max-level content) I'll be a very happy grinder.

Finally finished Starfield, after about 8 months and 100+ hours. I fluctuated on what grade I'd give this game many times throughout my run. I think I'd land at a B+. It has roughly the same writing and quest quality and other Bethesda games. The main difference is it just lacks the charm that comes with the ability to freely roam and explore in the Elder Scrolls games and, to a lesser extent, Fallout. The space exploration and outpost building mechanics are 100% dead-on-arrival. Space combat and building your ship can be fun (for my fellow old people in here, this aspect of the game reminded me a lot of Wing Commander: Privateer). However, the ship building process is, while more intuitive than outpost building, still mostly an exercise in frustration to learn.

If the game has an A+ feature, it's the implementation of new game plus mode. Without giving too much away, it's tied into the storyline almost in a Hades-like fashion. Thought that was really cool. I'll put a few more hours into this when the expansion drops in a few weeks.

I’ve been immersed in No Man’s Sky, just wandering around fixing up ships, and flipping them and occasionally hitting a mainline quest or two.

During one of the recent Expedition events, I graduated from digging holes to hide whenever the Sentinels came around to just exterminating whole planets worth of them if they dare to bother me, so I probably need to go back to the quest line.

I'm looking forward to Metaphor: ReFantazio (weird name, looks like my kind of game though) and Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Both coming out in October.

both of these are on my list, too. Persona 5 is one of my favorite games ever, so Atlus has a lot of credit with me. and I've been playing all the DA games since Origins.

I liked Origins the most. No co-op = out.

I have yet to play a co-op or MMORPG that has been worth it.

Someone described Metaphor to me as Persona 5 in high fantasy, which is pretty high praise if it delivers.

DA 3 was better than DA 2 IMO but I liked Origins and Awakening the best. I haven't seen much of anything on gameplay/story on Veilguard, I'm pretty much just buying on name value alone.

I am a dragon age fan and a bioware fan having also played BG 1/2, Star wars Kotor, and of course mass effect. I don't think they have what it takes to produce a good game anymore.

The people that were passionate about producing good games have all been forced out by management trying to squeeze the company dry.

As for the other game, i thought Persona 5 was too long. I liked the first 3/4 of the game but they should have just ended it before the reality merge. My wife and I started eating japanese curries because of Persona 5 though. They are quite a bit different than Thai or Indian curries.

There was a time where Veilguard would have been a no brainer preorder (huge DA1-2, to a lesser extent 3 fan), but I’m never preordering any game again after Andromeda, much less one from BioWare.

Totally need something to fill the gap though, October is so far...

I use Elder Scrolls Online for this. I played most of 2020 during Covid, and still fire it up for a few months at a time. I think the base game is free or at least on Gamepass. You do kind of need the subscription to enjoy it though. The upside is the subscription gives you tons of content, and you can buy it month to month. The game can really be engrossing for a few weeks / months.

Wife got me a PS Backbone for my birthday. I don't have a PS. Can someone explain to me like I'm GM if it's still worth it to keep? Do I need games on my phone? What would be the advantage of playing Steam games or whatever on it? Are the games still full price?

TIA, and sorry. I've been out of the video game scene since PS3 though we do have a Switch

I was watching some reviews of Black Myth Wukong this morning. I'll probably pick it up at some point. It looks like a fun game that isn't going to require that I think too hard. A nice palate cleanser. Not sure if I want to play it now or wait until after Silent Hill 2.

What got me thinking though is how my game consumption has changed over the past few years. The last few games that I really connected with -- Elden Ring, Baldur's Gate, Resident Evil 4, Helldivers -- all came from from either independent or non-western developers. I honestly can't recall the last time I bought a new game that involved Ubisoft or Bethesda or EA or somebody like that. Obviously I'm sure that I have some of those games in my library of course, but it just sort of occurred to me that somewhere along the line, those companies started releasing, well, sludge. I was aware of that, but it hadn't really occurred to me that I barely even pay attention to those companies any more.

I can't even remember the last time I saw a Sony exclusive that I wanted. I loaned my PS5 to my son a couple of years ago and never bothered asking for it back. I used to really like Sony's exclusives -- contrary to conventional wisdom, the PS3 had a pretty awesome lineup. But even Sony games don't really align with my interests any more either. And there aren't many of them.

It feels like it's been a long time since we had one of those big launches that everybody plays -- a Skyrim or a GTA, for example. This hobby feels pretty strongly bifurcated between big western releases (throwing Sony in here because they're catering to a western audience) and everything else.

Edit: Thinking of upcoming games that I'm looking forward to, Silent Hill 2 and the new Monster Hunter are way up there for me. Why the hell isn't anybody in the western hemisphere making stuff like that?

I picked up a few new cheap games

So far I like them all

Beyond Shadowgate is the official sequel made by the same people who worked on the original.

Usually I put games on my wishlist and wait for them to go on sale but I shot the locks off the wallet to show support for this type of endeavor. (It's only $17) This is probably my favorite of the three. Has the same vibe of the original but all new puzzles.

($4.49 sale price right now). Top down tactical shooter with dynamic lighting and some stealth. It's cheap and fun. Just how I like my games.

I have no idea what Im doing but I continue to die in horrifically brutal fashion and I need more of it. It's bizarre.

Kenshi is an open world, squad based sandbox RPG set in a brutal sword-punk wasteland. Gameplay is open-ended rather than a linear story, so you can play as a settler, a trader, a thief, a rebel, a warlord, an adventurer, a farmer, a slave... or just food for the cannibals.

But first things first, you need to survive. Train your men up from puny victims to master warriors, carry your wounded squad mates to safety and get them all home alive. You are not the chosen one, you’re not great and powerful, you don’t have more ‘hitpoints’ than everyone else and you are not special. Unless you work for it.
  • Customise a solo character or a whole squad and train them from puny victims to master warriors
  • Survive in an unrelenting world of slavers, cannibals, wild beasts and famine. Nowhere is safe.
  • Build your own fortress, research technologies, craft your own gear and wage war with other factions
  • Explore and scavenge the uncharted lands of one of the largest single player open world maps to date
  • Absolutely no level-scaling. The world does not level up along with you and the game won't hold your hand.

Star Wars Outlaws is pretty good. It's basically a typical Ubisoft open world game in the Star Wars universe and it has all the pros and cons of an Ubisoft open world.

If you are at all a fan of Star Wars, however, it does do a very, very good job of immersing yourself in the universe.

Blizzard had their standard Diablo launch last night. Expansion was supposed to release at 7PM Eastern and didnt end up releasing until almost midnight with an additional large download required at the last minute. I get to play it for a few hours today and then travel for work until Friday night. Guess I'll be playing catchup!

Silent Hill 2 is downloaded and ready to go. Really looking forward to this -- I never played anything in this franchise before, so this will be a new one for me. I also have a four day weekend coming up, so there's that too.

The thing that always stuck out to me about SH2 was the music. Hopefully the remake still has the original score, it was so good.

I dont know if its the original score but it's great. It has sounds and effects that will make you stop in your tracks checking your surroundings. Super effective use of music for a horror game.

I've played for about 90 minutes, and as you know this is a part of the game that if I had to start over again, it would probably take me about 10 minutes to get right back to where I am now. I tend to look in every corner, check every door, try to break every window, etc.

So far the sound design for this game is really excellent.
