Video games...what ya playing? And what are you looking forward to? (2 Viewers)

Definitely sad that the sale won't be for a while. I am on vacation with the family from the 11th to 18th and will have limited to no computer access. :kicksrock:
What's funny is Michael Pachter and other video game gurus are claiming that Steam sales are killing the industry because of reasons like this: because many consumers will wait for the Steam sales to buy games. EA says that won't do a Steam like sale because they are also on the bandwagon that it's hurting them. And I disagree. If I really want a game and it's going to be good, I'm going to pay full price and buy it day one. I use the Steam sales to buy games that I would probably not buy without the sales. In some of those cases, I find that a game is much better than expected and I'll be anticipating the next game in the series, which WILL be purchased at or around launch.
The few games I do own, there is no way I would have paid full $$ for them

Agreed. That said, I am really debating getting MP3 for $30 - no way Steam drops it below 50% off so soon.

Oh, and you can log into your Steam account from any computer or smart phone to make a purchase to your account. You don't have to install it where it was purchased. You can wait til you get home to install it and you got the deal. I haven't done this, but it's the impression that I've always been under. Please let me know if I'm wrong. Not that you should be worrying about video game deals when you're on vacation with your family.
Yeah, I have bought games on my phone before, but the browsing is a PITA. And it is a vacation with all of my wife's family, cousins, nieces, nephews, all piled into 4 vans in the hot and steamy midwest traveling between New York, to Ohio, to Illinois. Still think I shouldn't be thinking about other things?

Do you guys have a recommendation for an RPG, similar to Dragon Age, for PS3? I played through Skyrim for a long time, and I don't want to spend a lot of money on anything because it's basically just a weekend in the summer game for me until I get too busy at school again. I thoroughly enjoyed Dragon Age.
Reckoning: Kingdom of Amular...a couple of my buddies play and LOVE it. Of course, they company kind went under, but they came out with some DLC for it too. Take a look at it and see if it's your cup of tea.
Witcher and Witcher 2. Very similar gameplay

Continue considering me not very up to date on this stuff. Just broke down and got pre owned copies of GTA IV and LA Noir for the XBox. Also grabbed MLB102K (it was free) because I can't get myself to spend 50 bucks on a video game. Baseball is baseball. Not very concerned about that being fun for awhile. How about GTA IV? We already did a specific LA Noir thread and I understand its limitations, but don't remember the talk of the GTA one....

I liked GTA IV at first, but became disappointed with it as it went along. The missions got really repetitive, the checkpointing was bad, and you spend too much time playing darts with your imaginary friends instead of doing stuff. That said, it does feature one of the single best missions of any game from this generation (Three Leaf Clover), so it has that going for it.

I liked GTAIV. It wasn't as good as Vice City and about on par with San Andreas, but I liked it better than GTAIII. The car physics will take getting used to at first, as with other GTA games. The story is ok and the city is large enough to screw around, since that's what most people care about in a GTA game. I kind of wished I turned off the mini-map directions for the game, so it would have forced me to memorize the city more, and since there are cars with GPS, that would make stealing one with GPS to be a strategy over relying on the mini-map all the time. Just my opinion. I think the biggest gripe about GTAIV is that the secondary characters are constantly calling and texting you to maintain a relationship and it really does get tiresome.

Actually, they retracted the bolded.

For those looking for a good GTA knockoff, saints row 3 is pretty awesome. I probably liked it better than GTA 4 (although SR takes itself far less seriously)

I keep hearing that Saints Row 3 is better than GTAIV. It's supposed to go on sale when the Steam Summer Sale actually starts. Date still hasn't been announced.

I haven't seen that. I hope so. Keeping their games at full MSRP will kill Origin faster than their poor customer service.

I did receive an email from EA a couple of weeks ago saying that due to being a Origin member for a year, I got my choice of 1 of 3 games for free. My options were Battlefield Bad Company 2, Dragon Age Origins or Spore. Since I still haven't played DAO, that's the one I picked. So I'll play it when I get to it.

Just started playing RAGE. If you liked Borderlands then give it a whirl.
Just finished it yesterday, if you don't do any side missions, you'll be done in no time. I was shocked that it ended when it did. Way too short for such a huge game.

Thank you. I bought the Civ IV complete & Civ V bundle for $12.

Been hankerin to play a Civ game for years.
Are th civ games available on ps3 or xbox or just pc?
Civ Revolutions is for consoles.
To kill some time I fired up Civ 5 again over the last week. Tried to play on Diety with a really large map and it's just impossible, the penalties against the player for expansion are huge and the AI just cheats way too much and kills any fun for me. I'm sitting here struggling with my 4th city due to unhappiness and corruption and finally get it squared away. When all of a sudden the Iroquis invade with 20 units because they've run out of breathing room to expand from their 12 city empire that fills half the continent already. I don't like playing on small maps either, doesn't work well with how big they made the city radius in this version.I actually like a lot of the changes (hexagon playing board, no stacks of units), but this game needed a ton more balancing/fixing. Even after all the patches, it's still broken IMO. Wouldn't mind going back to Civ 4 again...

Edit: at least one of the recent patches finally made it possible to skip the opening movie. So annoying....

Ok. GTA IV got booted up for a little while last night. The driving controls suck. I'm assuming I will get used to it, but the camera and the controls just suck. I will have to play with the camera to figure it all out. Overall though, having only played for an hour or so, I'm assuming this game is going to feel very much like San Andreas to me - just too much. Vice City was perfect. The world wasn't that huge and there weren't stupid things like having to eat and get clothes - that really killed San Andreas for me. It's a video game - I don't need it to be that real, while at the same time one guy can take down the whole Russian mob or fight a gang war with one gun. The workouts were crap too. Yeah, Vice City was probably the peak for this title. I'll still play this one though. If nothing else its something different.

LA Noir - played until I got promoted to Detective. It's obvious there will be very little replay value here for the most part. Having said that, it was entertaining. Might be a little too much drama and not enough action, but I'm ok with it so far. Bombed the first interrogation simply trying to figure out what the computer wanted. But got the hang of it. Is there any time when you can just explore the world or are you always stuck in a mission of some kind?

I just installed it for the first time last night. Haven't played a Civ game since the original. I got my little city wiped out really quickly, China and Japan both declared war on me cause i was such a weakling.

So supposedly the Steam Summer sale starts the 12th FWIW. :( I will have to do my best to check here and there but would certainly appreciate the deals detailed in here. ;)

Highlights for today include Portal 2 for $5
Maybe I'm getting jaded but that's about the only highlight I see. I suppose if you were starting a game collection from scratch the SEGA hit collection is a great deal but for everyone else it's likely you have several of the best titles already. So far it's kind of disappointing.

This Steam site intrigues me. How much would I have to spend for a gaming computer? I'd prefer a laptop, but could go for a desktop if it would be significantly cheaper (although I would need a new monitor, so I'm guessing that would offset the price difference...?).

I've had the original Mass Effect installed on my regular laptop for awhile now, but it crashes every time I try to play it. I don't know for sure, but I think it's because I don't have a video card (or at least I don't think I do).

Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Mafia II for $7.49 each are also pretty good imo.

I'm in the same boat. I've been looking for a "gaming laptop"(all things being relative) for quite awhile but haven't seen a deal that grabbed me. I'm starting to think the shark move is buy the cheapest laptop you can with a good processor and the best discreet video card, don't worry at all about ram and hard drive as you can upgrade those later. Any laptop with a fair capacity SSD is ridiculously priced but you can get a good deal on an SSD if you are willing to install it yourself. Has anyone seen a good deal on laptop(can be refurbished) that has a good processor and discreet graphics for gaming?

Wow, that is quite a rig. I didn't want to spend that type of $ on gaming(although I'm sure I'd be very pleased with the improved performance of Photoshop/etc as well).I read this...

"The final negative is one gamers want to pay attention to: the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 675M is a very, very nice GPU. However, it is essentially a rebadged GTX 580M from the previous generation. NVIDIA will soon release the new GTX 680M, which uses a whole new chipset, will be faster, and run cooler. If I did not need a new laptop immediately, I would have waited for the 680M. If you are concerned about such things, hold on a little longer until laptops are available with the new GPU."

... and was curious if anyone knew when this GTX 680M will be released? I realize that anyone waiting for the latest/greatest to come out will never make a purchase because there's always something better on the horizon but if you are going to drop nearly $2k on a laptop I'd hate to miss out on a much better GPU by a couple of months.

Edit: I meant the Samsung Laptop

 I was hoping to spend maybe half that. I will wait for the responses to BoltBacker's question to see if that might be closer to my price range.

One of the things that's going to be rough for us is getting a laptop with better than average cooling. Playing games taxes the components pretty heavily and if it runs hot most laptops slow the processor down which obviously cripples the performance. I think we could combat that problem with one of those "coolers" that you set your laptop on top of and they are relatively inexpensive. I've never used one so I'm not 100% sold on how well they work but it seems like they should work very well for their intended purpose.

The best deal I've seen all week was this Defense Grid bundle....

http://store.steampowered.com/sub/12519/

... which actually went UP in price when they started the Summer Sale but I absolutely love that game. They also have a kickstarter page to hurry the eventual release of Defense Grid 2. I really like how these guys are embracing Steam and the gaming community. It's a stark contrast to EA whining that steam sales are bad for gaming... but I'm assuming make a 5% change to Madden every year and charging gamers $50 essentially for updated rosters is GOOD for gaming. Spend your money on publishers that get it. Plenty of DG fans are pledging $ on kickstarter based on the fact they payed a few dollars for Defense Grid and got more than 100 hours of game play out of it.

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/hiddenpath/defense-grid-2

I will say I love my GTX 670 over my previous 6870. Quieter and more power.

Now, please update the good deals for me here. My ability to use my new Asus TF300 to surf deals at night is crap.

Will someone please purchase Trine 2 for me. Buy it as a gift so I can give it to my son. I'll paypal you the money later today. Just post here if you will do it and then pm me your email to send the funds to. I cannot log into my Steam account. I enter the info but the character recognition thing is crap and doesn't work on android devices.

MC, I have you covered.

I've been wasting far too much time on Crusader Kings II lately. I'd definitely suggest it to anyone that enjoys complex strategy games or even to people that like the Civ or Total War games if your looking for something a bit more in depth. Especially if you can find it for $10 Steam was selling it for yesterday.

My son pre-ordered NHL 2013 CE yesterday. While there, the salesguy was talking about this game coming out called "Hitman" It sounded pretty damn cool. We have COD and I suck at it (Xbox360) but this seems a bit slower/sniperish.

Does anyone have any info on this game, and what it may be like?

Thanks!

Parm

Hitman came out over 10 years ago. Could be that they are releasing a new sequel in the franchise.
