Video games...what ya playing? And what are you looking forward to? (10 Viewers)

I finally started the Mass Effect series on the PS3 are my sons urging. They both played the series and loved it. In fact, my older son said it may have been his all time favorite. I can't play the original since it was never released for PS3, so I am starting with ME2. So far, I feel like the game should be called Mass Cutscene, or Mass Dialog. I feel like I'm watching a movie rather than playing a game. I have to assume it's because I'm just starting out and this will slow down as the game progresses? Because so far, all the cut scenes and dialog are really dragging the game down for me. I'm only to the point where I just got my ship, so I know it's very early, maybe an hour or less in to it. But I don't see me finishing the game if the whole thing is like this.
Without playing ME1, you're missing a lot of what makes it so great. ME2 is a fun game but the story will have gaping holes in it without at least reading the backstory comic.
ME1 was a complete disaster.Besides, I don't think the story is what interests him.
ME1 was a revolution. I don't see how you can call it a disaster. Its still my favorite of the 3 despite it having the poorest of the combat systems. Story, continuous world design, villains, ME1 still holds up well today.

ME1 was amazing for what it is. I loved the inventory/weapon upgrade system in that game so much more than the other 2. Take out the Mako and it was a much better RPG, IMO.

Now I can get on board with this. The problem is, the Mako was in there and the controls were clunky. If my aunt had a #### she'd be my uncle.

I loved the rest so much that I just wasn't bothered as much by the Mako.

Remember in ME1 when you had to shake down those monkey creatures in order to find that transmitter thingy?

Yeah. That was great.

In all seriousness though, the one thing about ME1 that was better was the leveling up and weapons modding, like MadCow said.

The surface mission got repetitive yes but I liked the Mako. Missed that beast in 2 and 3. It was the combat system in general that drove me nuts.

The video helped with the overall plot. Still wish I knew more about individual characters though. For instance, I get the feeling I'm supposed to be all jittery about working with Cerebus or Cerberus or whatever. But it is pretty meaningless to me. Haven't played since my first sitting, and will hopefully find time to try and hunt down the interactive comic or whatever. I think I'd like to read through it so I can respond (react) approrpriately to those I meet.

:yes:You really do get ingrained in the universe by playing it. You know just how bad Cerberus could be, especially if you did a lot of the side missions on planets.

Yea Cerberus was pretty F'd up in the first game. A lot of side missions where they experimented on aliens and humans a like. Caused Shepard a lot of grief in the side missions. The dynamic of working for them in ME2 is supposed to feel like choosing the lesser of 2 evils. You wouldn't really get that without playing ME1 or reading the books.

The Borderlands 2 release date can't get here fast enough for me. It has been a while (since Skyrim sadly) that I have looked forward to a new game.
You just described my situation perfectly. Since Skyrim, I've played a bunch of ok games to pass the time, but BL2 is all I really want to play.

:goodposting: I may have already said this, sorry if so. But son and I both pre-ordered this one. Comes with some amulet that gives you an extra 10% on loot drops. With us both having one, we'll be scooping up an extra 20%. Will be nice to be able to play and chat with him while we mess up some bad guys!

This thread has gotten to the point to me where when I click the button that is supposed to take you to the first newest post since your last visit, it just shows me the first post and that's it. I have to click on the last page and find where I left off on my own. Anyone else with this problem? I guess I should note that it only happens on this thread. The others work normally.

Doesnt happen to me. Just finished Darksiders 2. Great game. It has its problems, but overall I enjoyed it a lot. Its pretty much a mixture of God of War and Zelda.

Someone please buy Madden and tell me if it's decent. Hadn't bought one in probably 4 years but getting the itch

I have the opposite problem in this thread and the recently viewed movie thread. Takes me to the very last post, have to work my way back. I think I broke the space-time continuum.

Finished up Brink - I still enjoyed it but from reading about it, I understand it was pretty buggy on release. Although I was able to find some people for some online play, it's a shame they f'd it up at first. I think in its present state and an active community it would be a lot of fun.

Started playing Hoard. Not bad for a cheapo Indy game but pretty meh overall. Also been doing some Need for Speed Hot Pursuit here and there since my son likes to watch (although he was into watching Hoard as well).

Not sure what to start next. I've been on an FPS kick so thinking of starting up the Chernobyl series or Rage next.

Have you tried Just Cause 2? 3rd person, but giving it a try. Figure it has to be worth the $3.74 I spent.

Isn't that the one where you can shoot canister of gas and then attach yourself to it and ride it 1k feet into the sky? I'd buy that for $4.

Yeah, it is supposed to be a ridiculous action movie. Generic story as a back drop for being able to destroy stuff with lots of explosions, etc. Grapple onto a harrier jet and take command of it, etc.

Oh, speaking of games, anyone in here going to be at the Gamestop Expo in San Antonio Wednesday? Son really wants to go, but school started and they decided to hold it on a Wednesday during the day. Not sure what is up with that. Sounds like it will be awesome though.

I have it. Didn't do much for me.

Are you ever not in detective mode in Arkham Asylum? I don't see why you need to turn it off really?
To look at the graphics is my only reason. The environment is so beautiful but I find myself in detective mode like all the time just to see what's really going on.

Yea. That is sorta annoying. Second one is the same.
This is my major complaint with the Arkham games. The graphics are beautiful. It's such a shame that it forces you to go into detective mode so often and miss it. Hopefully when Rocksteady does the next one, they'll change it up so that detective mode doesn't ruin the graphics.

I downloaded the demo (PS3) and it seems much improved over the disaster that was Madden 12.

I just ordered Madden. Not sure how much play it will get but the reviews are pretty positive. I know they usually are because of $$$ but it sounds much improved

I picked it up reluctantly. The first time I throw a pass over the middle and the MLB jumps 10 feet in the air to pick it off, its being listed on ebay.

i *hated* that and how a LB could not only run step for step with your teams slot WR on a cross or drag route for half the field but accelerate past the WR at the last second.

considering pre-ordering borderlands 2. Not sure what system I'd buy it for (either PC or 360) but you guys seemed to have a ton of fun with the first one. (which i bought on steam when it was on sale but never played....)

Anyone going to get it?

I'm hearing that franchise mode in Madden is gone? And no fantasy draft anymore? WTMF?
How can they say that career progression from NCAA to Madden is enhanced without having franchise mode. Does not compute. Also see no reason why they'd remove the fantasy draft. What would be the point?

Well my first gripe came within 10 seconds of startingh the game. I was all set to play with NFL legends.!!!!!1111

So I go to play with Emmitt Smith and to no surprise, he's locked. How do you unlock him? Oh by buying pretend packages of football cards which contain only 1 random legend in the pack.

Hell if I am paying more money to play with something that should have been included. This is BS on the highest level. I'm actually considering returning it for this alone and regret supporting EA.

You have to buy the pretend pack with real money? It's not something you buy or earn with game money? That's crap

Just what I'm hearing. They have something called "Career Connection" that is supposed to be some kind of RPG-leaning experience, so maybe that is the NCAA thing. I've heard several people say that the fantasy draft is gone.

Its just called career mode now. You can play as a player or HC and offline or online with 32 others(players and coach careeers can compete in the same league). Your coaches also earn XP like players and they can all be leveled and "built" how you want. From what I have seen each +1 skill improvement can range from 700xp to 50,000xp. You can set up a fantasy draft in you first season its just defaulted to off.I havent played Madden in quite a while and I am enjoying it so farI think you can unlock players with coins which are earned. Not sure though just messing with my career currently.
