Video games...what ya playing? And what are you looking forward to? (2 Viewers)

Awesome flash sale on PSN right now. Including the Mass Effect Trilogy for $5.
I took advantage of this last week. I also bought The Walking Dead and Tony Hawk HD. Not a bad score for under $15
Me too. Bought a bunch of games. Also bought a bunch of games under $1 from a recent sale. As someone who is relatively new to "digital" games purchases, it's really changed the way I shop for games and makes it unlikely to buy anything new for anything close to full price.

I like digital because I'm too lazy to go change discs now.

Well been studying up on Dark Souls. Seeing all the Bloodborne stuff has me wanting to work through it. I think I am going to go with a sorcerer build. So I'll be spending a lot of today dying I guess.

If you're playing Dark Souls I recommend picking the Bandit or pyromancer. ( I don't like pyromancy cause its slow but others dig it). If you have trouble with your sorcery build, try this. I believe it will be more satisfying.

Get your Endurance up 30-40

Get your STR to 30-40

Get your DEX to 11/13 depending on the bow/weapon

Find the merchant, buy the heavy club, kite shield, bow and arrows.

Ultimately you're looking for a great black knight weapon, the axe being the most damaging.

Already got a fairly tank like warrior character. Got the cool swords, shields, the works. Didn't really enjoy playing the game that way. So I decided to try something different. I am going high Int, high Vit build. I will also put a couple of points in Str and a couple in Dex so I can effectively wield a melee weapon for close up probably the best dagger I can make or find. And of course points in attunement as well. Haven't decided how many though going to have to study that stat more closely to make sure I understand it.

So a little bit in and I am enjoying this style so far. But since I am usually pretty aggressive I am having to learn to get separation between my target and myself. Still first time I ever killed the Big Pilgrim first time through. I was pretty excited.

Bought The Witcher 3 for my PC, it brought it to its knees. Plays very sluggish. I don't know if I can talk myself into an upgrade yet.

So I get the perks of PC gaming, but this is pretty much exactly why console gaming is more my style. I buy the game, I play the game.

What are your specs? You might not need much.
I'll look tonight because I forget which graphics card I have atm. 8 GB of RAM, Intel i5 3.20 GHz

First impressions on Pillars of Eternity, maybe 10 hours in:

  • If you loved Baldur's Gate et al, celebrate
  • Doesn't use D&D as a base system; numbers can be a little wonky at times
  • Friendly fire is hard to avoid
  • Crazy number of character options
  • Deep story
  • Wandering around whacking monsters isn't going to get you far; quests get you by far the most xp
  • Tremendous guide on gamepressure.com
Follow-up, about two-thirds through, maybe:

  • Occasional graphic glitches like blank pop-up windows; nothing major
  • Load times run 10-12 seconds, which wouldn't be so bad if there wasn't so many of them. Every map, every building, every floor, even if it's only one room.
  • The bounties are the best way to advance in the game. Unfortunately, they're nearly impossible to beat until the party reaches level 7 ("Confusion" FTW)
  • The stronghold is a neat idea but really has little effect on the game. Would like to have seen that developed a little more
  • Fun interactions between the characters. Being able to mix and match the hirelings gives you a chance to try out the other classes as well
  • Story continues to hold together well
  • All in all, the game is tremendous. Well worth the cost and hopefully the Kickstarter success will lead to many more entries in this field.

So I'm currently playing Witcher 1. That super cheap steam sale a couple weeks back got me to buy it and I dove right in. Digging it so far, though the inventory system is pretty aggravating.

The one thing that rubs me the wrong way is the whole notion of sex trading cards. I'm no prude but this may be one of the most juvenile things I've ever seen in a game. If Geralt wants to get his groove on, more power to him. But we are really going to collect cards for his exploits?

While the series is still adult-oriented, they got rid of that after the first one.

I purchased Shawdowrun: Dragonfall - Director's Cut on a rainy Saturday for $4.50. Those of you into turn-based combat and a really deep story, it's worth the time. It reminds me of Dragon Age: Origins but with turn-based combat.

Plus, for $4.50. That's a steal for hours of entertainment.

Yeah, you have to keep in mind the game was made by Polish studio who gave little to no thought how the game would translate to English or the American market until after the game got popular and they made some money.

Part of what I find odd about it is that it seems to play right into American sensibilities. To me, the American perspective of sex being this taboo thing to discuss with teenagers would lead to these playing cards. That more relaxed attitude approach to sex in Europe sounds like it would make trading cards seem even more juvenile.

Don't really care but it just seemed an odd addition to the game.

Also, the fist fighting animations suck.

First game in a while I've been excited for. Deus Ex Human Revolution was a really fun game, with an intriguing story - glad to see them continuing it.
I'm doing a playthrough of DXHR Director's Cut right now and I am so impressed with the quality and the depth of the story. I can't imagine how much time just the story development took for a game like this. Dare I say there is as much, if not more, going on than games like Mass Effect and The Witcher. Plus I really appreciate that they took the time to truly allow legitimate stealth and head on combat options to complete missions.

Great stuff.

I've played 8/10. Never had Wrecking Crew and never knew anyone with Lolo. All I know is that this article is probably right. These were the best games yesterday and kids do not know how to even play these kinds of games. Shame.
Ive played almost all of those in the past year.

If my kids ever get into game seriously, Im going to make them beat a NES game before I buy them a new game.

Lol, I played Mega Man, Castlevania, SMB Zelda et am when they were 2. They enjoyed watching it.

Played them all. Owned 8/10 of them. But I'm no millennial.

I'm no millennial but most of those games are meh. Tecmo Bowl and Contra being the exceptions.
Can't agree with that. Especially with Mega Man 2, Castlevania & Bubble Bobble on the list. They are top 20 NES games. Double Dragon wasn't bad either, but the Sega version played better. Ninja Gaiden was pretty awesome too. Barely misses top 20.

Bubble Bobble was awesome. Much better than Mario Bros. was and more fun. Not sure if they can but if Nintendo can make a four-player Bubble Bobble... that'd be sweet.

Wrecking Crew I don't think I ever played. Reminds me of Ice Climbers though which was great.

Contra I was not a fan of cause it was too easy. By today's standards it would receive a 1/10. I much preferred Ikari Warriors.

Lolo never played.

Castlevania is a classic of all classics. I don't think it got the love it deserved back in they day cause they brought out a couple more whereas, I think, people compared it to Ghosts N Goblins which was crazy difficult. I think people that they were the "same" game.

Lode Runner was awesome. Great puzzle game and may have been the best until Tetris showed up.

Mega Man 2, I don't recall why it gets so much love but I enjoyed all the Mega Man games on Nintendo.

Tecmo Bowl was a great new concept with real teams. The RBI Baseball of football. Super Tecmo Bowl was ruined in college for me due to the limited number of plays and me not being nerd enough to learn them all.

Double Dragon was kind of a let down for me. Maybe it was just old school Nintendo's limits vs the arcade.

Ninja Gaiden I didn't like. I was too young to compete at it cause the boards were too difficult. I can't imagine going back to play it now though.

Great list overall.

Mega Man 2 was great because you had to have a strategy, not just run willy nilly at the next enemy. You had to plan what you needed to beat the next guy. I guess it had a RPG aspect to it.

At least that's what I remember. That was 20+ years ago now.

I'm about halfway through Alan Wake...

Good -

Creepy vibe

Good graphics

Cool flashlight then shoot combo of attack

Collectables are plenty and not too out of the way

Bad -

Some fluff gameplay. By that I mean I'm going from point A to point B and it's just bad guys in the way. Not many set pieces that are memorable, just running through the woods.

Not much for puzzles - when they do have them it's kinda half-assed.

Overall a B+ at this point.

They definitely throw a lot of bad guys at you but I think that is because the game is trying to keep your resources limited.

Yeah I can see that, but I haven't really been low on resources yet either. Granted, I'm playing on normal but I have yet to go below 17 of 20 batteries for my flashlight. I've never run out of ammo and rarely get below 10 flares. The only real limited resource is the flair gun ammo and I just save that for birds.

I really do like the game, though. The atmosphere is top notch and I enjoy the tv show pieces and radio chatter.

So what are some good arcade games on the Xbox One hat jave come out or are coming out soon? I have Ori and the Blind Forest, Child of Light, Taletell everything, and Life is Strang. I am in the groove of playing these shorter games as I don't have as much time for gaming stuff like destiny/witcher that I would Like.

So I beat this - still go with a solid B+. The set pieces and action got much better in chapters 4 and 5. The rock concert portion and going through the town with the cop was a lot of fun. The best part of the entire game is Barry showing up covered in Christmas lights - I lost it.

Very good, but was happy it was over when I got to the end.

I saw Rogue Legacy came out on Xbox One. That's one of my favorite games to come out the last couple of years. There's lots of replay value there, but you can play it at your own pace.
