Video games...what ya playing? And what are you looking forward to? (3 Viewers)

What's the thought on downloaded games vs. physical discs on an XBox One?  I personally tend to favor the disks - Something tangible.  If my console blows up, I still have the disk, even if I have to install it...I haven't "downloaded" a full game yet.  Is there any benefit to using one method or another to buy a game?

If I download a game, and something happens, can I download it again (like iTunes) or do I have to buy it again?

Most disc games still require a patch now to play the game. Some can be huge. So your disc may not play the actual game anymore.

You can uninstall/reinstall as many times as you want with digital.  If you buy a disk and your idiot kid breaks it or scratches it or feeds it to the dog, you're SOL.

The only plus of a disk is you can sell it if you want to.  I never sell any of my games so I'm 100% digital.

The other advantage of digital is if you choose to share your Xbox with someone else. You both get all of each other's games but only if they're digital copies. Helps minimize cost sometimes between 2 friends.

Then of course there's the lazy factor. When ever I play a disc game now, I whine about getting up to change the disc from the drive. 1st world problems for sure but once you start having the ability to load a game by clicking an icon while sitting on your couch, you feel the difference.

I would be all digital (ps4 FYI) but the damn Amazon overlords keep offering %20 off preorders for disc versions.  Also they had Madden 17 just a few weeks after launch for $40.  I can't pass up the savings.

Yup, only bonus to physical medium is that you can buy it cheaper from the 2nd hand market, or sell it there.  Nothing else I can think of (let someone borrow it maybe)

You can also get it cheaper initially, digital tends to be full price for a longer period of time as well.

This.  From here on out, I will always buy digital if the price point is the same (which sadly, it rarely is).

Next gen, though, they need to not scrimp on hard drive space.

I couldn't imagine waiting for a game to be delivered in the mail or having to drive somewhere to buy one these days.  Buying physical games for me has gone the way of writing letters on paper and mailing them.

I didn't think I would adapt as quickly as I did. I bought GTA5 on disc when I first got the XB1 this year but I've barely played it mainly because I have to change the disc. It seems so trivial but I know that's the reason.

Most retailers like amazon have release date shipping and in amazon's case, gives a discount on preorder's of physical. Probably the main reason I stay physical, plus they seem to rarely lower the price on digital, especially older games. $29.99 or $39.99 for 3 or 4 year old game I can get at the discount bin? No thanks.

I know it has been out for a few years but I just decided to pick up south park: the stick of truth.  Never played any sort of traditional turn based rpg but since I'm such a big fan of the show I decided to give it a shot.

Great game. They obviously nailed the feel of the show perfectly and it is hilarious.  Not sure how the combat elements compare to other games in the genre but I really don't care. If you're a fan of the show and haven't played, you're missing out
RPG elements are similar to Super Mario RPG.  It's definitely a game to play if you're a South Park fan, and I'm sure Fractured But Whole will be too.

I swear I saw trackmania on Xbox One on sale for $20 this afternoon.  Went to go buy it and now its $40.

Even though Ive got Battlefield 1 available in 2 days, I was going to pick it up for a fun racer but not for $40.
Just get Forza Horizon 3.  It's phenomenal.

The main reasons I still buy the discs are the price and there is a Gamestop near my apartment (and one near my office) and if you buy used disc you can return it within a week.  If you buy new or digital and you don't like the game, you are stuck with it.  Plus, I am just not a serious enough gamer to always buy the most up to date games.  I mostly play sports games and RPG games.  For Skyrim I might buy digital because I know I will want to keep it when I get the PS4, but for the sports games I will often buy a couple of year's versions and just return the one I don't want.  A used copy of a previous year's version will be a fraction of the price for the newest version.

Once Sony and MS start to run their digital pricing closer to what Steam does, there will be no point in buying physical. That's truly all that's holding back digital sales on consoles.

The only benefits for buying physical is used games, trade ins (but these are just money issues that should be sorted out sooner than later) and gifts. Giving nephews a new Nintendo game is more fun than giving them a Steam card.

Yup.  The past 4 games I purchased were deals on disc copies.  Madden $40, NHL $48, Far Cry $14, Doom $20

I also have had great deal on digital copies too (withcer 3 $20, golf club $10) but it doesn't seem like the diigital and disc sale happen at the same time

I think if I had a bigger HDD (500Gb here) I may consider more diigtal

And lol at the getting up to change a disc.  i have the same complaint.

For you guys who have gone digital only, what size hard drive do you have?
500gb PS4. That's enough to usually keep 5 games loaded on it at a time. I delete games off of it when I need too but can reload them from the Library anytime.

The only time that the HD size becomes a problem is when I just want to randomly play a game for a bit but can't because the PS4 has slow download speeds. However, I've also noticed that really it's only sports games that I'm going to only play a randomly for short bursts. Going back to online games or deep single player games (Witcher) I have found that I'm so far behind the curve that I have to relearn everything. So, either I'm committed to the game and don't mind the download wait or I'm not and save myself some headaches. Still, waiting to redownload is annoying but a 5 game rotation is usually good enough.

So I bought a physical copy of BF1 for xbone and I have been signed up for that EA subscription plan. My question is, how can I play BF1 early and when does that start?

I like when I haven't played for a few days and forget what game is in.  I'll get excited if it's one I'm in the mood for.

Or just turn off the PS4 because I don't feel like getting up to change it :kicksrock:

I hate changing discs.  If I need a break from my current game then I'll play something I have digital.  Its a real problem.
But if it's not XB1 or PC, I'm ok with it. Like the 360 I'll get up to change discs as needed.

Reminder, I need to redo my Wii so that it just saves all the games on the HDD.

Thank you for making me feel a little less lazy today.

It is interesting how quickly having the game always "there" becomes the norm. I also seem to be neglecting the few disc games I own. I'm about 90% digital these days. I only buy physical when i'm actually in a gamestop and see something used fairly cheap.

The only game I have that is physical is Destiny because it was a gift.  I have not taken it out of the drive for 2 years now.

100% digital here.

I know that the regular price of digital games are absurdly overpriced, but if  you watch the sales you can get almost every game at a discount at one point or another.

I've also reached a point in my life where I have a pretty good feel for whether not I'm going to like a game before I purchase it. I no longer have the impulse to buy every game.

Ive also realized that the 3 biggest problems with 99% of games is that they're incredibly expensive to make and don't have nearly enough production time.  Third problem that faces 100% of games is that even if you were given three or four years to produce a game the technology used to make your game/engine would already be outdated.

GET OFF MY LAWN!!!!

It's a sign of this board's aging demographics that a debate over whether we can be bothered to get off the couch to put a new disc into our gaming system has generated more discussion in this thread than any game has in a long, long time.

To be accurate, I game in my recliner.  My couch is too far to see the screen well enough on my 55 inch HDTV.

It might also be the state of games lately.

On the topic of being old, I was watching gameplay of 3 of the big shooters this year (BF1, TF2, CoD) and I can't even see half of the enemies that people are shooting at or getting shot by. Anyone else have this problem? Or better yet, a solution?

I don't have this experience watching game play trailers, but it happens to me when I play all the time, especially when I am playing split screen with my kids.  While I don't have the worlds best tv (probably 40 inch 720p), I'm sitting three feet from the screen, I should probably be able to see what's going on even a half screen.  I think it is just getting old and there is not much you can do about it.  Maybe playing on a 70+ inch screen helps.

Easy solution,  I put up a 100" projector screen :yummy:

All kidding aside, when I play a game like Battlefront on my 106" screen, I wonder how people can play on sets that are "only" 50-60".

And I have Lasik improved eyesight.

I haven't seen a home projector in 10+ years. In my remembrance of them it was a really large and grainy/fuzzy screen. I've never even considered this before.
