Vikings strong safety Tank Williams injures knee

Associated Press

8/5/2006

MANKATO, Minn. - Minnesota Vikings strong safety Tank Williams was carted off the field on Saturday after injuring his left knee.

Williams injured the knee while backpedaling during a seven-on-seven passing drill. He did not make contact with any other player, but as soon as he planted his left leg, he screamed and fell to the ground. He had to be taken from the field on a cart.

Williams had problems with his left knee while playing for the Tennessee Titans, and plays with a brace on it.

The veteran signed with the Vikings in the offseason, coming over from the Tennessee to compete for a starting spot. He had taken most of the snaps with the first team defense through the first week of training camp, but he was competing with the newly-signed Dwight Smith for the starting job.

This is never good news.

As I posted in the Smith thread in the IDP forum, I'm not convinced that the Smith signing is really all that relevant to the Williams injury, except insofar as it generally added safety depth to a team that lost a safety to injury. Ourlads (who in my experience has the best researched and most up-to-date depth charts) already Smith as the starting FS and Tank Williams as the backup to Sharper at SS. Wasn't Smith already the starter, with or without Williams' injury?

Yes, Smith was the starter anyway, but if he wasn't there then the Vikings would be relying on Offord (who I like, by the way) who is coming off an ACL injury last season.
