Vikings | Team will not spend as much in free agency this year

Published Sat Jan 6 1:48:00 a.m. ET 2007

(KFFL) The Associated Press reports Minnesota Vikings vice president of player personnel Rick Spielman said fans should not expect the team to make as much noise in free agency this offseason. The team spent big money on RB Chester Taylor, OG Steve Hutchinson, PK Ryan Longwell and LB Ben Leber during free agency last year. Spielman does not feel there are the same marquee names available this year. "I don't know if there is any guy that is going to be out there that is like that. To me, you're never one player away from winning a Super Bowl," Spielman said.

They are going to be pretty far under the cap again next year. They had the second most cap space last year. In fact, they have been among the lowest spenders for several years. I wonder when their fans are going to start complaining.

There are many teams that are under the cap this year so the Vikings are not at as much of an advantage this year as they have been the past 2 years.

I still expect them to go hard after one or two players. A pass rushing defensive end, corner back and Wr are the most likely targets.

If the Vikings do not sign anyone significant that would be dissapointing. But they cannot overspend too much this year with other teams being able to offer big contracts as well.
