Colts | Vinatieri dinged

Sun, 17 Sep 2006 16:23:49 -0700

The Associated Press reports Indianapolis Colts PK Adam Vinatieri (groin) could not kick the team's last extra point Week 2 due to a groin injury. P Hunter Smith attempted the extra point and missed it.

Anyone have updates?

"Adam had a groin that just kept getting sorer and sorer as we went,'' Dungy said. "Hopefully he'll be OK next week.''

Vinatieri, who overcame an injury to his left foot during the preseason, downplayed the injury.

"I'll be all right,'' he said. "Just making sure we're staying healthy.''
LinkIf he can't go - I would believe they would pick up Shane Andrus, who did some kicking for the Colts in the pre-season.

Vanderjagt also developed a sore groin from all the kicking he did when with the Colts... even after he stopped handling kickoffs. Perhaps it's just too much work for one person.

Dungy was on Sirius this morning and said it is the injury he is most watching this week. It will be a tell tale sign of course if the bring back Andrus. Do not expect Adam to practice until Friday.

Tony Dungy's telephone rang Monday morning. It was Morten Andersen. "Just to say he was available and to find out how Ben Davis was doing," the Colts coach said with a smile. Andersen spent his senior year at Ben Davis High School as an exchange student from Denmark. More to the point, the 46-year-old place-kicker has been out of work for two seasons, and he noticed that Adam Vinatieri was unable to finish Sunday's win over Houston because of a groin injury. Dungy wasn't able to provide Andersen or the media an update on Vinatieri, whose injury added to a sprained ligament and chipped bone in his left (plant) foot suffered in the preseason. Nor was Dungy able to shed much light on injuries to receiver Brandon Stokley, who aggravated a left ankle sprain, and defensive end Dwight Freeney, whose injury Dungy called a "hip flexor or hamstring." All three were scheduled to undergo magnetic resonance imaging tests, and their status for Sunday's game is uncertain.

The Colts brought in Martin Gramatica for a workout because they're uncertain about Adam Vinatieri's availability. Vinatieri hurt his groin against the Texans and did not kick the last extra point or the following kickoff. Vinatieri, like Freeney, was not talking Wednesday and Dungy said the team had not yet decided whether to sign Gramatica, who has been unemployed since the New England Patriots released him during training camp. "He kicked well," Dungy said. "We think he'll be ready to go if we need him. But we will have to evaluate Adam's situation and see what he can do, then make a decision."

"I talked to Adam (Wednesday) and he felt better,'' Dungy said. "Adam's a pretty honest guy and he'll know where he's at by the end of the week and we'll make a decision.'' The team might re-sign veteran Martin Gramatica if Vinatieri is unable to kick against Jacksonville, or is limited by the groin injury. Gramatica was in the locker room Wednesday and put through a workout in the afternoon.
link“Martin came in and kicked well. I think he’d be ready to go if we need him. We’ll evaluate Adam’s situation, whether he can do all the kicking or whether he might not want to kick off, long field goals. We’ll see how it goes.”

George Blanda retired when he was 46. If Andersen returns, he'll be a contender for the oldest player in NFL history
George Blanda was 48 when he last saw action I do beleive ..."He played nine seasons with Oakland, retiring one month shy of his 49th birthday in August 1976. In his 26-year career, he threw for 26,920 yards, completing 1,911-of-4,007 attempts, with 236 touchdown passes."

Colts | Vinatieri missed practice Thursday

Thu, 21 Sep 2006 15:58:18 -0700

Indianapolis Colts PK Adam Vinatieri (groin) missed practice Thursday, Sept. 21 and is expected to kick in the Week 3 game. He is not expected to perform kickoffs in the game.

“And depending on how Adam is, we’ve got a couple of options. If Adam’s going to be fine, then we won’t sign him (Gramatica). We could have Adam just kick field goals and sign Martin to kick off. Or if Adam can’t kick, then we could sign Martin and he could do both. But we’ll make that decision (today) or Saturday.”

Colts | Vinatieri misses practice, to handle field goals in Week 3

Indianapolis Colts PK Adam Vinatieri (groin) missed practice Friday, Sept. 22, but will handle field goals and extra points in Week 3. Newly signed PK Martin Gramatica will handle kickoffs.

I have no idea if Vinatieri will play this week. I DO know that he's supposedly been banged up all pre-season and is currently the NFL's leading scorer after 2 games, and would guess the Colts kicker will get at least 2 FG chances and 2+ extra points this week.

All this being said, a guaranteed 5 points from some other kicker probably trumps a decent chance at a ZERO if your gimpy kicker doesn't suit up...
