Likely to soon be bumped from the top spot on the depth chart, probably by the Sept. 10 regular-season opener, Tennessee Titans quarterback Billy Volek will waive the no-trade clause in his contract to facilitate a move to another NFL team.

Expected to supplant the departed Steve McNair as the Tennessee starter, Volek has been rendered all but extraneous by the Monday signing of veteran quarterback Kerry Collins to a one-year deal. In what has been a cram course to get Collins practice time, and to accelerate his learning curve in a new offense, Volek has seen his snaps reduced this week.

There is a possibility that Volek won't accompany the Titans to Green Bay for the Friday preseason finale.

Volek and agent Drew Rosenhaus have declined to answer questions about whether they have requested general manager Floyd Reese to trade the six-year veteran. People close to Volek, however, said this week that he has acknowledged that he will not be on the roster for the start of the season.

Teams must reduce their rosters to the regular-season limit of 53 players by Saturday at 4 p.m. ET.

In discussing trade possibilities in general, Reese conceded that Volek's name has "come up." The no-trade clause was part of the four-year contract Volek signed in March 2004.

There figures to be a healthy market for Volek, who has been regarded as one of the NFL's top backups for the last several years, but who failed to secure the confidence of the Tennessee coaching staff in camp or in the preseason. Among the several teams which might be interested in adding Volek, whose resume includes 10 starts, are San Diego and Cleveland.

The Chargers don't have a quarterback on their current roster with even one regular-season start and the Browns' depth situation behind starter Charlie Frye is tenuous. Those clubs could be attractive to Volek as well, because he might have an opportunity to get some starts this year if either Frye or Philip Rivers of San Diego struggles during the season.

Some teams might balk at trading for Volek and gamble that the Titans will release him outright. But if that occurs, Volek will become a free agent, able to sign with anyone, and the number of franchises bidding for him figures to increase. Trading for him would allow a team to inherit his contract, which has two seasons remaining, at palatable prices.

Volek, 30, has completed 312 of 517 passes for 3,505 yards, with 26 touchdown passes, 13 interceptions and a career passer rating of 86.9 in 24 appearances.

Volek and Chris Brown to the Packers for some beer and brats?

I could see both players helping the Packers. I am just not sure what they would be willing to give up? Volek to replace Favre next season and Brown could start for them.

Wow, this guy must have really stunk it up this preseason...he really fell out of favor quick!

Wonder where he'll end up.

Houston and the Titans must really be questioning the wisdom of their draft picks now. I wonder if Tennessee is wishing that they had chosen Leinart now. Interesting thing is, Houston knew about Davis' questionable knee, and it's not like Tennessee didn't have a few years to evaluate Volek.

Big mistake IMO. All they got now is Collins (1 year contract), Vince Young and Matt Mauck.

blech.

Top 3 pick, here we come!

The Packers have many problems and they are great. I don't think this would be a wise move for Green Bay at all.

It's amazing to me how the Titans continue to make bad decisions.

There is no reason to trade Volek. He is the only QB on the roster that actually knows the offense.

The only way a Volek trade makes sense is if they find some team to give up an insane draft pick for him and I can't see that happening.

I think this is a situation where Volek is worth more to the Titans if they keep him then if they ship him out.

My bet is Cleveland. This was being discussed on the radio and they pointed out that a sixth for Cleveland would be pretty close to a high fifth, which is apparently what the Titans want for him, a fifth round pick.

The Titans are trying to compete with Detroit and the Niners for laughingstock status. What sense does it make to let McNair get away if you're going to bring in Collins to start?

So much for Drew Bennett...
I'd actually think Bennett's fantasy value goes up. Collins > Volek. Actually, I'd say all Tenn WR's, TE, and RBs (in ppr) get a slight upgrade from this. Especially Troupe.
2004, Volek in weeks 10, 13, 14, 15 with the Titans10 chi | 27 44 334 2 1 | 1 5 0 | 13 ind | 21 35 269 3 2 | 1 -1 0 |14 kan | 29 43 426 4 0 | 2 24 0 |15 oak | 40 60 492 4 1 | 1 1 1 13 TDs in 4 weeks and about 1,500 yds...one of the best 4 week runs in FF history I am guessing2004 Drew Bennett during those 4 weeks10 chi | 0 | 6 148 | 1 |13 ind | 0 | 3 124 | 3 |14 kan | 0 | 12 233 | 3 |15 oak | 0 | 13 160 | 2 |9 TDs, and 650+ yds...this has to be about the best 4 weeks ever in FF...mind boggling.I'm not saying Volek is a world beater but my god teams have got to have an interest in someone that can put up those kind of numbers. Guy is 30 years old, been in the league as a backup for a long time....maybe Chow is not the OC for him but there has to be some teams that would "step up" to the plate and make a trade offer for him. GMs don't have that short of a memory I hope.

Well, I've always considered them a pretty sharp organization and they must know something I and the rest of us don't know, but on the surface, this move is mind boggling on a million levels. To think what they could have had at one time for Volek(even pre draft this season). It makes no sense.

Phil Savage hates to trade draft picks. It could happen, and appears to be a decent landing spot for Volek, but I think the Browns will get Testerverde as the backup before Savage trade picks for Volek. Of course, William Green and Lee Suggs are available......

Minnesota could use a backup to Brad Johnson while Jackson learns from the sidelines. Unfortunately I could see them bringing in Jay Fiedler before trading for Volek.

Volek's numbers during preseason action in no way support this very odd situation. My guess is there is a larger issue but it will never be made public as it would reduce Volek's trade worth. Either he peed in someone's coffee, slept with someones wife (or husband, NTTAWWT), or broke some other golden rule... but there's just no way this is a preseason performance issue when they've had this guy on the team for 6 years. I also agree with others who feel each new management decision is either making the Titans look wrong in retrospect as to prior moves or alternatively that they just have zero direction on where this team is going.

ETA: Since his agent is Drew Rosenhaus, another possibility is he's making contract demands behind the scenes since he knew the team was heavily reliant on him as a starter while VY learned the ropes. I could definitely see Rosenhaus trying to leverage that against the Titans. He has to know Volek's likely a 1-year band-aid and won't see any performance based money in the 2007-2008 years of his deal (and is a risk to be cut if those years balloon in value). That could explain the sudden signing of Collins. Does anyone have a break-down as to Volek's contract values, and whether performance in years 3-5 plays a big role in the value of the deal?

Fiedler was cut for being physically unable to play. Don't think he's going to help many teams right now.

I'm not sure I agree with the move but I do understand the logic. I think Volek should get a chance to start and prove what he is capable of. He could pull a Drew Brees and burst onto the scene after the team drafts a QB in the first round.

Here's why this move makes sense. Vince Young is clearly the future of the Titans. Volek may have the best chance of leading the Titans this year but he is not the guy to mentor their Vince. Volek only has 10 NFL starts, Collins has 145 including a start in superbowl XXXV. Their thought is that Collins will be the better tutor for Young and it appears they are willing to sacrifice a few wins this year as an investment in their future.

Remember Collins didn't do all that badly last year in Oakland - 3759 yds, 20 tds 12 ints.

Because McNair would have put the Titans way over the cap. Collins comes ALOT cheaper than McNair would have.

How the hell did Billy Volek have a no trade clause?
His contract came up while McNair was still there. Some teams were interested. With McNair's injury history, I'm sure they were willing to give him anything that would make him happy and not involve more money.

There are worse things in the world than getting Calvin Johnson on board....
What about Dwayne Jarrett? Another Norm Chow connection. They should be printing this out on their 2006 reg. season tickets....2009 Tennessee Titans: VINCE YOUNG! LENDALE WHITE! DWAYNE JARRETT! FEEL THE EXCITEMENT!

I agree, but they have been flirting with Collins for a LONG time. Rumors have been flying for months, one has to wonder why they didn't at least give the guy a training camp.

Thanks for the link apo. Things move pretty fast. I would agree it's something behind the scenes going on.

Is it possible that Volek has an injury that the general public doesn't know about?
