Cowboys not changing coaches; coach plans change

Linky

The Dallas Cowboys aren't changing coaches. Instead, coach Wade Phillips plans to change.

"We know things must improve. The only way is to change things," Phillips said. "To get to the standard we want, I don't see another way."

Phillips said he and Jerry Jones already "talked man to man" about what went wrong and what needs to be done about it. All he's decided so far is that he needs a plan; he's only started putting it together. However, he said both coordinators will be back and he expects all the star players to return.

"My personality is not going to change so much as what you ask players to do," he said.
Here's something that hasn't changed: soap opera side stories.

Bradie James spoke to reporters only to clear up information about an incident he'd just gotten into with a fan who was standing outside the driveway into team headquarters wearing a sandwich board that read "Our team has no heart" on the front, and "Wade is an embarrassment to the star."

James tore the sign off the man, breaking his sunglasses. James then went to his locker, got a pair of expensive shades he'd been given and returned with an apology, a handshake and a gift. Police came and left without taking any action.

"He was like, `Why you guys didn't have that fire last night!' You should've showed that much heart last night!' So the next thing you know I'm just ripping that sign off of him," James said. "So I went and gift-wrapped some Oakleys, and he got something out of the deal. I told him, `I share your frustrations. But where we differ is I wouldn't go to anybody's job, especially not up here with 300-pound guys, trying to tell them what they didn't do right.'"

When you seek out a postion in the public light, get the massive rewards therefrom, and then whine about disparte treatment and expectations from normal positions you are niave, at best.

To his credit he recognized the error of his reaction quickly and moved to rectify the situation. Still, his parting comments about 300 lb. players makes me think he still has a disfunctional perspective and needs to do some further growing.

Lets just see what happens. It would not surprise me in the least if Wade is fired yet.
I think the way that unfolds would be if Garrett gets serious interest early on from another team and Jones decides it's either promote Garrett or lose him.

FBG HAS SPOKEN - Get rid of them both!

Wade In or Out?

Do you think Wade should go?

Yes [ 52 ] [82.54%]

No [ 11 ] [17.46%]

If he goes, does Garrett get the HC position?

Yes [ 21 ] [33.33%]

No [ 42 ] [66.67%]

Well that's good news for the rest of the NFC.. :excited:
:goodposting:

If anything, Jones might be regretting promising Garrett the head coaching job, and since he would have to then promote him if he fired Phillips, perhaps if Garrett latches on somewhere else, Jones would then fire Phillips and seek out a new head coach.Wait, scratch that. It would make too much sense.

Not sure Jones would wait for someone else to decide the Cowboys coaching fate. I don't think Jones would feel too bad about breaking his promise to Garrett. And if doing so requires additional compensation, then so be it. Small price to pay.As for Phillips, he really sounded as if he knew how he was going to change going into 2009 - "whether that means being more demanding or whatever..."He's a man who inspires confidence...

It would not surprise me at all if Jerry is having quiet conversations with Cowher and possibly Holmgren. No one in their right mind would put a rookie head coach in charge of that asylum. Jerry may be foolish, but he's not that stupid. I'd put the odds at 50/50 that Wade returns.

For all the talk about Pacman Jones and T.O.'s latest histrionics and Romo's December swoon...why isn't there more talk about Roy Williams? The guy showed star potential in Detroit, but the Cowboys gave up THREE 2009 draft picks for him [including 1st and 3rd] PLUS signed him to a 5-year, $45mm deal with $20mm guaranteed. They paid him like he was one of THE pre-eminent players [not just WRs, but PLAYERS] in the league. And what did they get in return?

In nine games in Dallas, Williams delivered:

19 receptions

198 yards

1 TD [in the first game he played]

10.4 yards per reception

That is just pathetic, yet Jones has no accountability because he writes his own paycheck.

Crayton put him to shame...

It is pathetic. No doubt. Miles Austin would have put up better numbers with the same number of snaps. But lets see what happens when he's actually healthy and they have time to figure out how to use him. He was battling a foot injury pretty much the entire time he was in Dallas. He did not have the burst that he had in Detroit. This trade was made with a long-term perspective. I'm not aware that any WR traded during the season that played well that year. I will say that I really didnt like the way Roy seemed to be pouting. The way he seemed to give up on routes. Lacked situational awareness. I know he got grief for things like that in Detroit. But it was Detroit. I sure hope it doesnt carry over here. And it appears that it might be.

Star potential in detroit?? I really don't understand what people saw.. I see overrated. Roy Williams basically has the same stats as Jerry Porter except he eclipsed the 1000 yard mark once. Giving up that much for Roy Williams was the worst move the Cowboys have made in an extremely long time... it was really bad. If Parcells was still there.. his head would have blown up before this trade went through. He's better at talent evaluation, clearly. They thought Roy Williams was going to take some heat off of Terrell Owens, but what they didn't realize is that Roy Williams isn't an elite WR and can be handled by a decent corner, just like crayton.

He is stupid if he thinks either one is going to come to Dallas and be his lackey. Both would demand to be GM too and that would end the deal.

No one, and I mean no one, can signal first down after a 7 yard catch like Roy Williams. You can't quantify or put a price on that.

Did anyone notice in the game on Sunday..........3rd down play, pass to Whitten on a 5 out to the right side, incomplete throw due to pressure on Romo and he leads him to far.

ROY11 ran a 8 yard slant right behind Whitten. If Romo throws to ROY11, the ball is picked, as Whitten's man is directly in front of him, and his CB is on his hip pocket ready to jump the lazy route.

Right after the incomplete pass ROY11 raises both hands in disbeleaf and looks to TO. He holds his hands up until TO gets there and then they talk animatedly.

Either TO has to go, or ROY11 will become a cancer also.

Romo can not be your leader. Whitten is to quiet. The only guy on the offense that looks to have the personality to lead is Columbo. Either that or DWARE has to lay down the law for both sides of the ball.

If Dallas CUTS both TO and Pacman this team becomes better immediately. TO can't be the leader but doesn't want anyone else to be either. Pacman is just a POS, I wouldn't want to play with him.

Romo can get better and will. He will cut down on the mental lapses and cut down his turnovers.

At QB, turnovers are killers! Romo MUST protect the ball better. Some of his problems are obviously O line issues that need to be corrected. I though H. Houck was supposed to be a genious. Well, it didn't look like it this year.

O-Line - cut down on the friggin penalties and zone block better please before Romo gets killed.

WR-T.O., Roy, Crayton and Austin are a fine set of receivers. I don't think we need change here, but more consistency and chemistry with their QB.

TE- We're fine here. Witten is a warrior and Bennett is an up and comer that just needs a year or two to mature.

RB's - Barber is a STUD, Choice is a very nice change of pace and Felix has blazing speed when healthy. Use them properly and we'll have them all year as a three headed monster.

Defensively, we're inproving but need to let a few go and add some LB depth. Get ride of Tank, Zach and Carpenter. Rogers?, Polk? Octavien? Who are these guys if nothing but special teams and that group sucked big time! . Roy Williams(S), I don't know if there's a place for him anymore in Dallas. Pacman looks lost out there and needs to really step it up in the offseason to make the team.

Fire the special teams coach now!

I'm convinced Jerry needs to get a head coach that has a pair of nads and can get intimidating with the players. Hold them accountable. He needs someone in between Parcells and Wade. Brian Billeck, Schottenheimer, Cowher, someone other than Wade.

Brady James was on TV here saying he didn't think it would work with Wade changing his personality to be more demanding. It's not his nature, he's a nice guy DC that should not be a HC.

Jerry needs to decide soon before the other teams looking for HC's fill those spots.

We need several areas addressed in the off season in order to get back inthe playoff hunt and make a SB run. I think we have a window of 2-3 years and the sooner the better.

And that is the reason I don't expect Dallas to make a true run at the Big Game for a long time.
