Ok otis.

Looks like you got what you wanted, now enjoy all your pictures and stories about people's kids and their 1st day of school.
Honestly better than this fad. Are people in here still furious if we question this?
Why would you question something that raised a lot of money for a great cause? Not furious just wondering why it makes you upset enough to vent about it?

i've read charity is a zero sum thing, no clue if this is actually true, just what i've read. i wonder if other charities donations went down during this period.

So anything that raises a lot of money for a great cause is above questioning?

I'm going to start the "blow an airhorn in your neighborhood at 3 AM challenge" to raise money and awareness for [insert your favorite charity here].

No, if people are killing puppies to raise money to cure colds, its good for you to complain.

When the main complaint is your facebook feed has too many people posting a stupid video you are just being a ####.

What if the complaint is it's created a new phenomenon... the social media ultimatum?

How is junk mail the same as being tagged on Facebook so that all your 500+ friends are all notified that you've been given an ultimatum?

I think the vast, vast, vast majority of FB friends don't care or give anything a second thought, the very moment they scroll past a post on their news feed.

And if they do: How do I remove a tag from a photo or post I’m tagged in?

you can also: How do I review tags that people add to my posts before they appear?

ETA: Very few of the 500+ friends even see the post on their news feeds.

Donations topped $100MM in 30 days.

Number of donors topped 3 million, vast majority are first-time donors to ALSA.

ALSA raised less than $3MM over the same dates last year.

Right. Stupid people using Facebook for what it's intended. Pisses me off. :hot:

Hopefully there is a save the tatas challenge involving buckets of ice water for the month of October. Or heck according to that British article about lost ######s this is ###### cancer awareness month now, so maybe there will be some viral (no pun intended) awareness campaign for the kitties.

Imagine how much I could make if I ran a "Pay $100 or give up FaceBook for life" challenge! Billions. Heck, I could make it $1,000.

Only 29% of ALS Association donations are going towards research.

The conclusion is misleading since part of their mission is patient and community services (19%) and ALS education (32%).

Still high that more than half goes to administrative expenses, fundraising, and promoting ALS awareness.
The article is also misleading because the percentages do not cover the donations that have been made through the ice bucket challenge.
WTF is that site? A blog written by some lackie in his mother's basement?

Its about ALSAs support of stem cell research. the blog mentions ecfa won't approve them. here is ecfa step #1 to being approved by them (After paying ECFA a membership fee of course).

Every organization shall subscribe to a written statement of faith clearly affirming a commitment to the evangelical Christian faith or shall otherwise demonstrate such commitment, and shall operate in accordance with biblical truths and practices.
for anyone whenever they are giving, you can always give a restricted gift. I want my money to only be used for __________ (family services, research, etc)

Yeah, I'm sure that works.

Hey, we got $20 bucks for somebody that says he wants his gift to be used for dildos. Someone get on this.

A few chicks started doing some "pretty face challenge" thing last week....

This involves zero giving to charity and, as far as I can tell, is simply a lame excuse to post a half dozen duck-face selfies of your own "pretty face", then call out your girlfriends to jump on the narcissism train.

Thankfully this died out quickly...

Assuming the non-profit isn’t a sex related charity, they wouldn't be able to accept a gift for dildos . If you are giving a small amount it probably doesn’t make sense to give a restricted gift. I know when you give on the ALS site it allows you to give a restricted gift for research.

Yep, all you have to do is check a box.

I think "percent going directly to research" is pretty overrated for these large organizations. The total going to research is far more important.

It costs a bunch of money to raise awareness and advertise for the cause/charity, and without it, it doesn't matter what percentage goes to research because you aren't raising anything.

In the end, if they are generating a bunch of money for research and creating some quality jobs along the way, there's not much reason to worry too much about the overall percentage.

Saw a billboard that said something along the lines of After the Ice melts, The disease remains. Please continue to support ALS.

I am not sure what I think about that. I understand that they don't want to be viewed as a fad and it is a serious disease. On the other hand, I don't really like that they are spending money on billboards already. That seems like a bad use of the massive cash infusion they just got. They were a relatively small charity and they will likely receive 100 years worth of donations this year. They should be viewing this as their shot for a cure, not their shot at becoming a well known and well supported charity. Increase awareness by having a research breakthrough, not by becoming Komen.

You've summed up why I'm not on Facebook and most likely never will be.

1. It seems stupid - I don't care what anyone else is doing.

2. I would absolutely piss someone off with my comments. "You saw a rainbow today? OMG!"

Yeah, found out an old friend from college that I'd basically lived around and with for the better part of a fractured graduation year was diagnosed with ALS at 37 or 38 due to this challenge. Also found out a really good college friend has a father diagnosed with it.

Ick. These facebook things are annoying. Stop your donations and awareness. It's messing up my facebook feed.

Your fault for being on Facebook. You don't see me joining Grindr only to complain why gay dudes want to #### me.

Probably a good idea to vet the charity you are donating to before you donate. Just sayin'.

I think there's a difference between spending a significant percentage on exorbitant salaries and the like and spending sensible and limited amounts on fundraising efforts. If a charity has an annual fundraising drive, they have to spend money on mailers (printing, postage, etc.). If they have a fundraising event, they need an underwriter to cover costs for catering, facility rental, etc. Those are dollars that are not going directly to the mission of the organization even though it certainly serves the mission. You could have an organization where 100% of donations go to the charity's mission, but no one will know about it and donations will be dramatically reduced. And even if you managed to get someone to rent a facility for free, or cater your event for free, or do your printing for free (very difficult in today's climate), those are still considered in kind donations and do not directly serve the mission.

Not saying a billboard is a good idea at all. Just saying that the analysis needs to be a little more nuanced.
