MIAMI BEACH, Fla. -- Former NFL star Warren Sapp has been charged with domestic battery in South Florida, and the analyst will not be part of the NFL Network's Super Bowl coverage on Sunday.

Sapp was charged with one count of misdemeanor domestic battery and is expected to appear before a Miami-Dade County judge Sunday, Miami Beach police spokesman Juan Sanchez said.

The NFL Network spokesman Dennis Johnson released this statement: "We have been made aware of the arrest of Warren Sapp by the Miami Beach Police Department. In light of these circumstances, Warren Sapp will not appear on NFL Network while we review the matter."

The domestic violence allegation was reported around noon Saturday and detectives interviewed Sapp later that day, Sanchez said. The alleged physical altercation against a female acquaintance took place at 6 a.m. ET Saturday at the Shore Club Hotel, where Sapp was staying, ESPN's Kelly Naqi reported, according to a source.

The victim had a swollen knee and bruises on her neck, according to an arrest affidavit. She told detectives that she was partying with Sapp and her friends at the hotel and asked for his room key when she grew tired. Sapp reportedly woke up the victim a few hours later and they started to argue. She told investigators that Sapp started to choke her and pushed her down on a couch.

As the argument escalated, Sapp grabbed the woman by her shirt and neck and threw her down again, the affidavit states.

Sapp told investigators that he let the woman stay in his room but asked her to leave a few hours later. He told police that the woman fell on her leg when he tried to help her get off a couch.

A telephone message left for Sapp's attorney was not immediately returned, nor was an e-mail.

Sanchez said Sapp was expected to be transferred to Miami-Dade County jail Saturday.

The former defensive tackle played for the University of Miami, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Oakland Raiders.

Besides the NFL Network, which is owned by the league, Sapp works as an analyst for Showtime's "Inside the NFL" show.

Sapp was in South Florida as part of the NFL Network's coverage of Sunday's Super Bowl between the New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts.

" Nice to meet you", "buy you and your friends a bunch of drinks until 600 AM" "Oh, sure go sleep in my hotel room for a few hours. nothing bad will come of this" "My wife will fully understand"

He's a terrible analyst. Now they have a good reason to get rid of him. He's embarrassing on TV.

If the reports are right, and he was charged with "domestic" battery, then there is more to the story. For the charge to be "domestic" and not "simple" battery, there are certain requirements that must be met. The people must be married, dating, roommates, family members, or involved in a sexual relationship.

It is pure speculation on my part, but I wonder if she alleged a sexual relationship between herself and Sapp.

How is he terrible?Have you been an analyst before, so you can critique him?

Plus, he has played in the league for many years and is a future HOFr, so how is he embarassing?

He's hard to look at and listen to. His facial expressions give off the feeling that he's uncomfortable on TV, which in turn makes me feel uncomfortable. He also stutters which adds to this uncomfortable feeling he projects. Hope that answers your question.

Not to mention he begins his answer to ***EVERY*** question with "I'LL TELL YOU WHAT..."Irritating beyond belief.

From your own definition, could they qualify as "roommates" if she was staying there? I would be zero percent shocked, of course, if she alleges a sexual relationship as well.

This. When he's semi-clueless about a topic, he immediately reverts to his bug-eyed routine where he nudges the former NFL player on his right or left and proclaims, "That's not how we did it, right!?!?"

From the articles floating around...

The woman said she had been dating Sapp about two years. She told officers the two were partying with a large group of friends when she got tired and went to lay down.

Sapp entered hours later, pulled her out of bed and tried to get her out of the room, according to the complaint. The complaint says he yelled at the woman about men she had been hanging out with and men listed in her cell phone.

The woman told police Sapp choked her, threw her down on a couch, then picked her up by her shirt and neck and threw her down again -- injuring her leg.

The victim had a swollen knee and bruises on her neck, the affidavit says. She was taken to the hospital.

Sapp told investigators he let the woman stay in his room but asked her to leave a few hours later because he was expecting company. He told police the woman fell on her leg when he tried to help her get off a couch.

I would have left her alone and gotten another room...maybe they were booked but just let her sleep it off. Sounds like there were problems long before the two were scrapping int he room. I gues athletes haven't learned form Mike Tyson, Kobe, Irvin just a day or two ago...they don't understand the implications of women in their hotel rooms.

Or maybe they don't understand you don't slap around or force yourself on women.

or he woke her up for some slickem on the hangdown and she refused?

never like to hear stories like this. too bad, because I found him to be entertaining enough on the air. nothing special, but if you're not Emmit Smith, I'll probably like you

These. Almost as irritating Greg Gumbel on every run/play after catch saying "Still on his feet"

I love this argument. You see, it cuts both ways. Have YOU been an analyst? Can you credibly compliment him?The argument isn't "have you been an analyst", but "have you seen enough analysts to know the difference between a good one and a bad one?"

And I'll answer "yes" to that question. Warren Sapp is an embarassment to that show.

But you know what they say about ashholes and opinions... so others out there are welcome to enjoy his schtick, just not me.

Sapp makes me uncomfortable too. When he gets worked up his eyes look maniacal, and inside I feel like he'll reach through the TV and choke me- like I'm his lazy, stoned baby mama who won't clean up this f---in' house. No, I won't miss Sapp on NFLN one bit.

ok so just because this person isn't a football analyst, he cannot critique Sapp?? :goodposting: so , I can't critique the lousy job Obama is doing simply because I've never been president?

I can't say Joe Theismann sucks simply because I'm not and NFL analyst?

trust this guy, Sapp is horrible..think Emmitt Smith with less on-screen talent..lol

I can say Chris Berman sucks ,without being a studio host myself..

take my word, he sucks.. :lmao:

Sapp can barely put a sentence together, anything that gets him off the TV is ok in my book. Plus I think he's a complete #### anyway.

Some guys are not meant for TV, Emmitt Smith was one and Sapp is another. Sapp does not seem very sharp on his feet, and his butchering of the language is difficult to listen to.
