My boss does this.....along with a pin stripe european style suit everyday.....the thing is, he's a straight guy from LA......I don't get it, can just assume he's a tool!

I have a couple of French Cuff shirts which are always the last in my rotation. Since my dry cleaner's pick-up/dropoff day is Thursday, it usually works out that I wear one of these shirts every other Thursday.
I don't like them particularly, but chicks compliment me almost every single time I wear one of them.

Cufflinks, a decent superfine 180 shirt, woven silk tie and a pinstripe suit... 
I voted pretentious. I have a number of clients that wear cuff links, and every time I have a meeting with them I note to myself that they think they are well dressed, but don't have a clue what the hell they are talking about. I am more apt to trust/do business with someone who speaks well, looks me in the eye and is sincere, than I am someone who thinks they look good wearing cuff links and a Rolex watches.

what about if they have both?I love that you think they're all a bunch of dumbasses, and/or that a guy with money and style can't speak well and be sincere.

I'm a big fan of an expensive time piece.....cuff links, not so much. I don't think they're all a bunch of dumbasses, I KNOW they are. One guy has a rich dad. One guy married into a rich family. Another guy is a stammering idiot who wears cuff links and drive a 15 year old Chevy. These guys all think that by dressing nicely will give them a small degree of credibility in their given fields. It does not. It is pretentious. My lawyer wears cuff links and I think he is pretentious too, however he is good at his job and needs to impress other fools from time to time who evidently think dressing well is a sign of knowledge.

Maybe the sincerity part....but most of the guys I know with kickass clothes and timepieces seem to be doing a lot of things right.

One of our Vice Chancellor's does this as well. He'll often go with the French cuffs and suspenders. Older gentleman with a family and grown children. He's from New Orleans originally, and he is a professor of French. It works for him.

The more I think about it, the better this idea sounds. It's like "pimping out" your Yugo with running lights, a Mercedes grille, and a back-end spoiler. Cufflinks with long sleeved crewnecks will be the new "street" trend, and it will all be due to my genius.

Just because americans are unable to dress well, it doesn't mean that anyone who is is naturally an idiot.Taking personal pride in one's appearance is essential in my line of work. I'd be the one who looked a "#######" if I turned up to work in a Brooks Bros buttondown and slacks. My clients want professional advice, from professionals. Dressing like an FBG (admittedly this is from a small sample size) would not get me through the front door, let alone to the desk of an executive...
You guys should get over you prejudice and start taking an interest in what you wear. Look at the cufflinks that the guy is wearing. Are they like something from a "Cracker Jack" box, or are they well-worn silver, plain, stylish, something that is subtle but still makes a statement? Look at the the shirt they wear. Is it a button down, with frayed collar and cuffs, with cufflinks pushed through the butotn holes? If so, yeah, he's a #######. If it's a decent shirt, well-made, good stitching, nicely shaped collar and decent cuffs, then he's either someone who knows how to dress, or he got lucky. Either way he prob deserves a few kudos for making the effort.
As for watches, well, there's obviously a difference between a "statement" watch and something that is worn because the guy likes it. Large Rolexes often get in people's faces, especially when the guy has a habit of shooting his cuffs to show off the links, and exposing the watch. But anyone who concsiously does that is probably an idiot. Or an egotist. Or both.
Real style is not about what you wear, but how you wear it...
So give up on the broad, sweeping generalisations, and go out and spend a little more that ten bucks on a shirt. You may surprise yourself...
