Week 12 Weather: Jets-Bills in Detroit, Monday at 7pm (1 Viewer)

With more snow falling in the area around Ralph Wilson Stadium, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo considers it "impractical" to play Sunday's game between the Buffalo Bills and New York Jets as scheduled.

"Everybody would love to see a Bills game go forward, but I think even more, everybody wants to make sure public safety comes first," Cuomo said at a news conference Thursday morning. "At this point in time, doing what we have to do with the driving ban and everything we just said -- staying off the roads -- would make a Bills game impractical.

"So if you ask me today, right now, my two cents would be it would be impractical to do the game because it could jeopardize public safety."

The decision to postpone or relocate the game rests with the NFL. The league has been in constant contact with the Bills since the storm began but has not announced a decision on the game's status.

The Bills canceled practice for a second consecutive day Thursday. For those who aren't snowed in, there is still a driving ban that remains in place for several towns around the team's facility in Orchard Park, New York. Major highways, including the New York State Thruway, remain closed with more snow expected by the end of the day.

And there's this

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Wednesday that both teams must know by Friday if kickoff will proceed as planned.

From weather advisory just before lunch

at 1111 am EST...National Weather Service Doppler radar indicated a lake effect snow band capable of producing snowfall rates of 3 inches per hour or more...and visibility near zero at times. This lake effect snow band was located along the Lake Erie shoreline of Chautauqua County northeast across the Boston Hills and southtowns...into much of Wyoming County. The band will move about 5 miles to the north before noon. Towns including Hamburg...Orchard Park...Elma...West Seneca will start to see more continuous snowfall while the next tier of towns will end up on the northern fringe...including Lackawanna and Lancaster and Alden.

I think even without the weather a Bills/Jets game is impractical............. LOL

Seriously though, they need to do what is safest for the teams and the fans.

Will it be played somewhere else?
how would the Bills team even get out of Buffalo

move it to Monday/Tuesday or something if Sunday is no do able.

Or move it to Detroit, like they have before.
Airport isn't in terrible condition as some flights are coming in and going out - so Jets could get here or Buffalo could get out(provided a player isn't snowed in)
There is a travel ban in the area so I'm surprised there are any flights at all at that airport. The Bills haven't even been able to practice. Unless the snow stops soon and everyone in the city grabs a shovel, I don't see any way they can have a game there.

You might have to worry about flooding more than anything. Supposed to be mid 40's over the weekend and 50's Monday.

Living in one of the hardest hit areas ( 77 inches of snow fall so far, with more still coming at 3-6 inches/hr ). If I could get out of my driveway, I would be able to just reach the 5 foot snow in the street. Travel bans are all over the area. Today roof collapses are starting to show up in any flat roofs, including some warehouses in the area, so that concern is also present.

The storm has mostly cut the county in half, as the airport is on the half which has received just 6-12 inches of snow. So the north section isn't bad at all. All the south buffalo area and suburbs, which is exactly where the stadium is located, is buried in 5+ feet of snow and still coming all day today and into tomorrow as a 2nd lake effect storm has entered the area.

Some of the tv shots from the air from the stadium you can not even see any indication there are seats as the whole stadium is full of snow cover. 220,000 tons of snow was quoted at this time, with more still falling.

I'd venture the game won't happen on Sun in Buffalo. The scary part is Sat. where 50's are predicted, so a lot of snow compact and possible major flooding issues could happen. I also heard a foot of snow takes a couple days to remove, so having 5 feet might make it quite a monumental task to clean up, even with the thaw.

This is very negative...lets focus on the positives.

Sheesh, this time of year reminds me why we pay arms and legs to live in CA. Here's wishing all of you in Buffalo safe passage through this storm. If the NFL doesn't move this game, they are ridiculous.

No way in hell this game is played in Buffalo. Living this nightmare right now with over 70" at my house and by the end of this probably push 90"

That stadium is buried. The parking lot is buried. I don't care how many shovels you put to this at $10 an hour forget about it. The Bills have not even practiced since Monday I believe. Now bldgs are collapsing. All emergency services will be busy with this storm and will not be able to handle the game too.

Yea this game will be moved to another site and played on Monday, no question. The only question now is where to...

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Sunday's game between the Bills and Jets is expected to be moved from snowbound Buffalo.

Schefter's colleague Adam Caplan reports Bills coaches are "preparing for the chance the game is moved to another venue on Monday night." Per Schefter, the Bills are unsure if Ralph Wilson Stadium will even be ready for Week 13 as Buffalo battles a biblical lake-effect snowstorm. MetLife Stadium and Pittsburgh are two possibilities were the game to indeed be moved. Schefter reports Detroit and Washington are also in play.

You would think they have to put it in a dome to avoid any possibility of further weather hampering this game. My guess is Detroit.

Why not Toronto? Customs/visa issues?

I would think that's exactly the reason, particularly for the Jets. Securing passports for everyone, etc.

Adam Caplan just retweeted a Mike Rodak tweet that Rodak's sources say NFL expected to move game to different city.

Why not meet up at Syracuse in the Carrier Dome?

Excellent idea

Then The Bills would still have a semblance of a home field, instead of moving the game to Metlife.

The NFL hasn't canceled a game due to weather since 1935. A few have been postponed or moved to different locations, but none were canceled.

The bigger issue with Syracuse is that they are playing hockey games there Friday and Saturday, last game starts at 7. I'm guessing it would take more time to remove a hockey rink than the conversion between football and basketball.

ESPN is saying"... both The Bills and Jets are preparing for a Monday night game in another venue."

Such a strange week for the Bills. Coaches are at the facility putting together video tape of the game plan, sending to the players electronically.
