I'm in a league that awards PPR and points for punt and kickoff return yards.

After watching last nights game I couldn't help but notice Welker was given a few looks and seemed to do a decent job. I know Welker might not be a star in the making but if your in a league that counts return yards he looks to have some value.

Any other thoughts on Welker in this offense.

P.S. He is in the Madden commercial so he has to be good right.

I'm thinking that Welker benefited from the strong Steelers' secondary blanketing Chambers, and there's little to go around with Chambers, Booker and McMichael in the mix.

On the other hand, Culpepper did seem to look his way, so maybe there is something to the guy.

Welker is quick and has good hands, I think he could be a Stokely type guy who benefits from defenses having to worry about two other very good WRs on the field. Booker seems to me to drop too many balls though to scare defenses enough and Welker would still have to contend with McMichael for targets, although McMichael seemed almost absent at the end of last season IIRC and in this first game. Welker has a Tim Dwight thing going on though and he always seems ready to break a long return, he had some good ones last night. He also usually makes good decisions and can hold onto the ball when returning or playing WR. If the Fins had Manning at QB he might be worth a WR4 in some leagues I think, definitely in leagues that reward return yards. I have the fins D in a league that rewards return yards to the defense and he single handedly made up for the mediocre play of the fins D last night for me.

In a league giving points to return yards he is an extreme value pickup... I used him last year in this scoring system as a fill-in a couple weeks.

The return yards give you a near-guaranatee of at least a decent point total - with the potential of big points if he manages to catch a few balls (like lastnight).

I love this guy on my roster.

I'd expect Hagan to get more looks in the long run. It's a talented receiving corps. Chambers, Booker, Hagan, Welker and McMicheal. I expect a lot of balls to get spread around. Maybe as a WR4 in deeper leagues for bye weeks. And, his duties as KR/PR up his value in leagues where you get points there. With time CPepp will find the open guy. Definitely somebody to keep an eye on though. His value may rise. I wouldn't make a move based on the one week though.

My league offers up 1 pt per 10 KR/PR yards....which is the same scoring that you get for recieiving/rushing yards..... I snatched up Dante Hall and Welker in the 8th and 9th round. Both outscored Chad Johnson in the same scoring system last year!!

That is sweet. Both should be top 5 wr for you. It pays to know your scoring system.

I know it seemed like Booker's name was being called alot but he only ended up with three catches. After Booker came back in the game Dante still seemed to throw a couple Welker's way and I believe that was who he was trying to throw to when Porter got that pick.

It will interesting to see the actual targets as sometimes they are surprising how diffrent they varry from what you preceive whatching the game.

On a side note: I ended up dropping Winslow (have Watson and they are same bye week) and figure to see how it goes. I'm in a 14 team league and drafted last so always looking for a little value hear and there

Welker's the real deal. I've been a big fan of his for a while now. He was the only Miami WR to have a better than 50% catch% last year (Welker: 56%, Booker: 45%, Chambers: 49%). He's also the real deal on returns. He owns the NCAA record for punt-return TDs with 8.

In leagues that reward heavily for return yards, he's a borderline stud. For leagues with lighter rewards for return yards, he's a good #5 prospect WR. I also like his dynasty prospects- you have to remember, this is his third year here. He spent his first season entirely on special teams, but actually got some good action in the receiving game last year.

2. Primary PR

3. #3 WR

In a PPR with return yards, he's a likely starter for you. Think reliable #2 WR type starter, mayeb a bit more or less based on scoring.

Before Booker's injury, Welker was targeted twice and caught both passes for a total of 16 yards.

While Booker was off the field injured, Welker was targeted twice and he caught both, for 31 yards and 20 yards.

When Booker returned, Welker was targeted four times. The first was intercepted and the other three were on consecutive plays at the end of the game. None of the three were completed.

So Welker was targeted 8 times, catching 4 for 67 yards.

IMO Welker, Hall and Mathis are the 3 guys who fit these description best. So if you're in a league that scores return yds and you missed out on Hall and Welker: be sure to get Mathis once he comes of the PUP(?). Moulds is in town now, but Mathis is a great returner and catches a pass now and then, too!

My league scores the same, but nobody but me noticed it, so after the draft, I picked up hall and welker. Welker was good for 21 pts last nite. I think he had a total of almost 2200 yds last year between returns and receiving. no touchdowns last year, but that works out to an average of 13-14 points a week, and there has been talk of him getting more involved on offense this year.

Just wanted to comment on 2 of the targets that Welker missed toward the waning minutes of the game. One was the Porter interception and it was thrown behind Welker (right to Porter). Another was the 4th down play. The pass was thrown to Welker on the sideline but took him out of bounds. I think he caught the pass.

My point is that 2 of the targets to Welker were not good passes.

I picked up Welker last night. My league rewards 1 point per 20 yards on punt /KO returns.

My league rewards return yards and PPR for the first time this year and it seemed that not many took notice. I grabbed Hall in the second to last round and almost grabbed Welker too but thought i would wait because we dont have deep benches and i had some nice back up RBs i didnt want to lose unless i HAD to.

After Welker went off in the first half i went a step further than just grabbing him, i starting researching return specialists from the last 2 or 3 years as well. I found that a lot of the high yardage returners are not going to be the go to guys this year.

Drummond is not going to return this year from what ive seen, Mathis is on the PUP until late October with a fractured foot, Swinton is gone, etc...

Justin Miller and Terrence Mcgee are still in it for KR for their respective teams but probably wont see the field a whole lot.

The guys with a real chance to rack it up in leagues that award return yardage are Dante Hall, Welker, and Bryant Johnson in AZ. He is also listed as the sole KR, PR, & #3 WR as well.

Stecker in NO will have some KR and RB duties also.

Look out for Tab Perry & Antonio Chatman for the Bengals. Both are going to see some WR duties and also share KR and PR.

If Cleveland is as horrible as some predict, then Josh Cribbs may load up on return yardage and might see the field a bit as a #4 WR.

Same with Tennessee, Bobby Wade is the KR and #3 WR

Definite value in such leagues. Nowhere near as much in most FF leagues - my problems with Welker in "normal" leagues are three-fold:1) he is too important on ST to risk getting hurt on the field as a receiver, and I love the rookie Hagan - esp. as the possession receiver they need - his PT on offense will be sporadic.2) With Booker and Chambers ahead of him, and the rook behind him, and McMichael and Brown both being darn good pass receivers, consistency will be a huge problem, even in PPR leagues - one ball, too many receivers.3) I was sold on C-Pepp until 5 minutes in the 4th - those two INT passes were horrendous. While the defenders made good plays, the throws made those plays MUCH easier and the INTs fall way more on C-Pepp than the defender making a superb play (the one handed INT and TD return *was* sweet, though). I don't think CPepp was able to step into his throws like he would have liked - accuracy of his passer is a concern.In short, I love Welker b/c I love the 'phins. I expected to see a ST TD from him last year - and after watching him last night, you have to love him in ST yardage leagues. But, unless you are in a very large (16-team plus) league, or in a league that doesn't reward ST yardage, I don't think he has much value.

In ST yardage leagues and larger leagues, Welker is a worthy topic of conversation. And as to"getting ahead?" No - he was just as exciting in 2005.In PPR + ST yardage leagues, DHall was a top-20 WR and Welker was the WR26.He had 29 catches for 434 rec. yards and 1769 ST yardage. No TDs.Discussions on players like Welker are precisely why we have the Shark Pool.

In our 16 team PPR+return league Welker and Hall are very valuable. Swinton and Drummond have been in the past and Drummond will be this year too - if he keeps up the duties for both kickoffs and punts. The trick is finding a RB that does both return jobs - that guy is huge to have off the bench. Last year, Sproles and BJ Sams were like gold. This year, obviously Sproles isn't an option, but Sams still is if he holds off Ross for the BAL return job.

It's common in our league for about 8-10 of the teams to have one of the returner-type guys on their bench for bye-week replacements and a few of them will get regular starts (Hall, Welker, etc.)

Looking at last year's numbers for our regular season (13 games) those 6 (Welker, Hall, Swinton, Sams, Sproles, Drummond) collected the most return attempts (ranging from 61 to 84 attempts) - all except Sproles had at least 20 PRet and all except Drummond had at 40+ KRet (mainly because he missed games). Mathis was in the running as well, before his injury. We can't select DB's but there a few of them that returned a good number of kicks last year too if that is an option for your league - Chris Carr, Justin Miller, Allen Rossum, and Pacman Jones.

Anyway, I have Hall and Drummond and Deangelo Williams (kickoffs only?) this year and had Hall and Swinton and Sams at times last year and was very happy with their contribution. It'll be interesting to see what Reggie Bush does with his return chances this year.

His hands are decent (not great) but he is a small target. I see him as a good player for the NFL but not valuable from a fantasy perspective.

I agree... you need to get return yardage for wes to be valuable. As soon as I saw him catch 2 I grabbed him. Like Hall he's really valuable if he gets a couple of catches a game in addition to his 100+ return yards...

I fully agree that Hagan will move into the third receiver role, but I disagree that Vick or any other 'phin receiver would get more work than Welker. First of all, Vick is on their practice squad and they'd have to cut/IR someone for him to move up. Second of all, Welker has proved very valuable as another deep threat - Booker and Hagan aint blowing anyone away with their speed, but Welker gets past people in 1 on 1 coverage.I see him as you do - a valuable member of the phins squad, but not valuable in fantasy circles UNLESS you receive ST yardage and/or you are in a big league.

Thanks for chimming in Marc and makign some good points. My league is not a dynasty but a redraft with 14 teams that awards .5 for receptions and 1 point for each 20 yards PR/KR. Last night Welker scored like 17 points where Chambers had 8.6 with 5 catches and 52 yards. We only have 2 RB slots but 4 WR slots so I thought if Welker just gets points from ST yards alone he is worth a roster spot and wanted to make a post incase others are in leagues with scoring such as this. I know last year I got a ton of points from Terrance McGee (we also have IDP with points for tackles and pass deflections) but someone drafted him early from me this year. lolOh yeah and just thought it was funny that while watching the game and thinking about picking up Welker they played a Madden commercial and it shows Donte throwing a TD to Welker for the TD.

Welker ranked 26th in the NFL last season under TSN scoring (2 points per reception, 2 points per yard receiving, 60 points per TD, 2 points per punt return yard, 1 point per kickoff return yard, -20 points per kickoff return attempt). And that was without scoring a single TD.

Welker's actually very fast. Not Troy Williamson/Chad Johnson/Kordell Stewart fast, but faster than any other WR in Miami except Chambers, and possibly even faster than Chambers, too.

I believe Bluestaples was referring to the game in 2004 in which Welker returned a kick, returned a punt, kicked a FG, kicked an extra point, and made a tackle (second player in history to do all of those in a single game).

Just to tack on from a Miami homer who's watched Welker for 2+ years...I love the guy. Absolutely my favorite player on the team. Agreed he's good in return yards leagues, because he does double return duty and is a good returner. The only reason nobody knows how good he is in the return game is because he's only had the 1 return td, so he hasn't gotten himself on ESPN enough. He just goes out and gets 10 yards on every punt return.

I actually thought he was very impressive when they played him out of the slot last year. Seemed to make a lot of big 3rd down catches. He's one of those guys where good things happen when you get the balls in his hands. That said, I can't ever really see him being good for more than 30-50 catches for 400-700 yards in any given season. He's just not built to catch the ball 70 times in a season and handle return duties, which is why they brought in Hagan (and to be the WR2 of the future, Welker is most effective out of the slot). He could have some value if Booker went down, and it wouldn't be the most surprising thing ever to me if he blew up into the 70 catch 800 yard 5 td "semi-valuable fantasy bench WR" range, but I doubt it.

If you had done any research on his stats, you would see that in the last 2 years he has had @ 1700 return yds each year, and they started using him a a WR last year and he had another 430 yds recieving. Nobody is getting pumped from one game, his prior stats prove he has good value in a league that counts return yds.
