Well, it's that time of year again. (1 Viewer)

It's the offseason, the gloomiest time of year for fantasy footballers. 2 weeks until the combine, 10 weeks until the draft, and 20ish weeks until training camps. The football news cycles are light and often filled with fluff or downright fake news. What do you do with your time to fill the void?

Since I only play Dynasty it's time to relax and enjoy scouting the rookies and come up with some trade ideas as my strategy is usually to get younger in the offseason/acquire draft picks and get a little older during the season when you are actually trying to win real games after reality and injuries set in...as BB would say "no days off."

Let's discuss fun light hearted topics like gun control, abortion, and racism. That always seems to go super well. What's everyone's thoughts on the first couple months of Trumps presidency? Your stance on DEI in the work place? I think we could get some real progress done here boys (and girls).

If not obvious, literally dripping with sarcasm. But for whatever reason this does wind up the time of years the boards degrade into that stuff. So let's not do any of that lol.

The tush push thread and some bold predictions from JonMX on his favorite Detroit players would be much more bearable.

But in reality my fav. bumps will be Socrates thread on rookies, Fausts news blurb threads on rookies. And the eventual rankings/tiers positional threads. Maybe some buy/sell trade threads to get a feel for what I consider the "sharper" community thinks. KTC is a great tool, but I like viewing it through the FBG lens which I think tends to slant towards a little more of a savvy take on it.

Oh and mocks. Can't get enough mocks. Sometimes even more so the ridiculous ones, as even playing with sharks I feel like I always see a few crazy picks in my leagues rookie drafts that really rock the boat and make you have to think on the fly and adjust your original plan. Can't be too prepared.

Now the hard work begins, especially for DEVY. The easy part of the season is over.
I don't see how you DEVY guys have the time to scout both the NFL, College, and often High School. I will forever be in debt to y'alls insight and knowledge of the incoming rookies.
I don't pay attention to high schoolers, but I do pay attention to in coming college freshman and what they did their freshman year. HS rankings are mostly inaccurate long term. You can make big mistakes by drafting HS seniors in DEVY and thus don't waste my time with them. With DEVY you will also see a roller coaster in value for players that may fade for a little while, then may reappear, or not. A good example of this is Evan Stewart, Zachariah Branch, Isaiah Bond, Barion Brown, Raheim Sanders, Ollie Gordon, Cedrick Baxter, Justice Haynes, and even TreVeyon Henderson. I remember Stewart being a hot commodity in DEVY a few years ago and his star definitely dimmed the last couple of years and he just went back to school for another year. I think Bond has always been more about projection than substance, so we will see. Branch was a hot pickup last year, but definitely faded in 2024. Same goes for Barion Brown. As a UK fan I always thought he was overrated. He transferred schools in the off-season. Raheim Sanders star faded and he was a highly ranked RB prospect a couple of years ago and has been injured a lot with knee, ankle, and shoulder injuries. He transferred from Arkansas to South Carolina and had a little bit of resurgence in 2024, but nothing earth shattering. Ollie Gordon was a hot DEVY player in 2023 and had a monster year, then disappeared in 2024 and seem to have lost all his vision on the field. The combiine is probably more important to Gordon than any other RB, to see if he can recapture some of that potential NFL draft capital. He might be able to do that, or he could even be an undrafted FA. Cedric Baxter was a hot name last year before tearing his ACL. Let's see if he can bounce back this year. Justice Haynes is a good example of a highly ranked RB coming out of HS and hasn't really done anything yet, but the potential is still there. He did score 7 TDs last year, with a 5.7 yards per carry. Same for Reuben Owens (injury to knee) and Richard Young, and the jury is still out on them as well. Because of Henderson's past injuries his star faded, then had a rebound in 2024. Also, the fantasy community can get prospect fatigue with highly ranked players early in their college career. Good examples of this are Emeka Egbuka, TreVeyon Henderson and Nick Singleton.

The best part about the off-season, if you play any kind of year long keeper/dynasty, the Shark Pool is the best of the best. The posters and active discussions are all more experienced and serious. The Shark pool is the best interaction of FF addicts anywhere. I’m a better player because of it.
Cheers!🍻

I started playing dynasty again a few years ago. The Shark Pool has been an amazing resource during the offseason to plan for rookie drafts. Last year I even started reading the DEVY threads to get ahead of the game. I also found plenty of good info in the IDP threads. In my spare time I guess I will have to work on my pickleball game and figure out how many leagues I want to be in next year. I added three last year when FBG introduced me to their new Sleeper leagues.

Speaking of pickleball, I played while in college back in the early 80s before anyone even knew what it was. It's a cool game. I remember it being a cross between tennis and ping pong using a paddle and whiffle ball.

Unpopular opinion given this audience, but I unplug. Since I started doing this my teams have actually gotten better. Do I miss some opportunities? Sure, but I'm also less susceptible to information overload and developing biases. I stay up to date on news and engage in actual NFL talk, but nothing fantasy nor rookies until after free agency. Then I ramp things back up again and through our rookie drafts early-May, but then unplug again until late summer.

What works for me doesn't necessarily work for others though.

For my football fix discussions here and slow drafts, already in my third one.

Other then football start taking care of stuff I've put off during football season, usually re-commit to being more diligent hitting the gym, watch a lot of movies/TV shows, usually try and fail to get into basketball.

Not going to pull a Hunter S Thompson but it's definitely depressing when football season is gone. Really feel it on a weekend like this one. I find it to depressing to think in terms of stuff like we don't have meaningful game for 7 months and just try and focus on the next stage and it sounds like you might be thinking in similar terms. So instead of thinking no real game for almost 7 months I focus on NFL combine in a few weeks. Then free agency, then the draft, then dynasty rookie drafts. By the time I get to the end of that we are almost in June and while those next 6-7 weeks are the absolute slowest time of the year for football news I'm comforted that it's not long until we start getting back in the cycle of training camp news, which is my next item I look forward to after end of rookie drafts. This is how I cope.

Even as a DEVY player I usually relax after the season, then in March and April I ramp up my research more getting ready for drafts. I have baseball coming up and it’s a dynasty league that includes minor leaguers. That kind of baseball format is ten times harder and more time consuming than fantasy football, including DEVY leagues. Thus the reason I only play in one dynasty baseball league. I retire later this spring and will have more time to devote to fantasy sports. As if I don’t already :)

Try and get commitment / payment from all 24 guys in my dynasty devy 2-copy league.
Figure out how many are dropping out and then looking for replacement owners.
(A couple guys dropped out and their teams are bad so also figure out finances if I need to discount)
Setting up and running dispersal draft before the NFL draft / rookie draft.

Since 3 of my 4 dynasty leagues are FFPC, with roster cut down on 3/31, there’s usually trade activity in all of those leagues and lots of offers flying around this time of year. Then the rookie/FA drafts happen around a month later, right after the NFL Draft. So not much down time, which is fine and why I signed up for dynasty in the first place.

My 4th dynasty league is a long running workmates/friends league that’s had around 3 incarnations over ~15+ years. That league goes into offseason hibernation as soon as the fantasy season ends and then ramps up in July/August. They all like a late draft date to know more about the rookies and vet situations (which is a negative for me who likes to stay up on this stuff in the off season but so be it)

That's me as well, especially in dynasty/devy. People who are interested in leagues in February/March are most likely to make committed owners.

Once that is firmed up, I get rule change proposals from my owners, followed by voting for/against proposed rule changes.

Then other housekeeping issues (e.g.; schedule creation, draft order determination in the leagues where that's appropriate, etc.) followed by the first drafts of 2025, the earliest of which are still not until after the actual NFL Draft is completed.

In IDP leagues this is the time of year to look to acquire (via trade or waivers if open) DL and LB who are either young or have seen a scheme improvement as a result of coaching changes.

I don't play IDP, but wanted to ask, do LB and DL ususally score more points than DBs? The reason I ask is in reference to Travis Hunter. If DBs don't score as much and Hunter gets minimal play at WR, is he a valuable draft piece in IDP?

I think most IDP leagues try to balance out the scoring between defensive positions. CB is an oddity because the best real CBs didn't usually make good IDP candidates. The #2 CB opposite a stud CB usually score higher because they are targeted more. BUT, even an average IDP CB can become a high scoreer if you add in receiving, rushing or return stats.

I don’t mind Feb as its time to unplug and recharge/get refreshed for the next season. Things start ramping back up once the combine gets going and FA.

The worst time to me is mid-May to late July, once my leagues have all drafted. Most trading is pretty much done in my leagues until preseason kicks off as teams made their maneuvers in the lead up or during the rookie draft. I try to remind myself to enjoy the summer but I usually obsess over the weaknesses in my teams.

Gradually, as my commissioners update my MFL leagues to 2025, I’ve taken some satisfaction in activating the 5 to 10 players on each squad that have languished on the IR.

I spent about an hour the other day doing a spreadsheet for each of my dynasty teams, identifying my core players, and assets that I could likely give up in trade.

My next step is to check out some other rosters to see who might need those assets, and start using GroupMe chat to float ideas for trades for players or picks.

Ain’t no off-season for a true grinder.
;)

At DL you are seeking consistency and snap count. So any info that suggests a young DE has taken a step up the rotation means get him. LB can vary according to new defensive coach or potential FA/draft arrivals. DB are very interchangeable during the season and most of my leagues are not CB required, so I usually start 4 x S.

In general LB score more than DL/DB and for sure are more consistent.

Hunter's value is going to depend on league scoring settings. If CB gets receiving and returning points he has the potential to be a cheat code. If the league settings are defensive stats only then he is a hard pass for me unless he sucks and gets picked on during the season.
