Wes Welker likely to start year on PUP list

Welker

Patriots beat writer Mike Reiss predicts that Wes Welker (ACL, shoulder surgeries) will open training camp on the PUP list and stay there for the first six weeks of the regular season.

Reiss finally puts the brakes on all the optimism surrounding Welker's recovery. While the slot machine's presence at practice has been impressive, it would be a borderline medical miracle for Welker to be full speed in Week 1. "He's on schedule," coach Bill Belichick said. "Hopefully with no setbacks, he'll have an opportunity to get out there and compete at some point this year." Jun. 20 - 9:58 am et

This is total speculation. Here's what Reiss actually said.

Even though Welker's presence on the practice field for individual drills has been impressive, I think it's an optimistic timeline to think that he could be ready for the season opener Sept. 12 against the Cincinnati Bengals. If I had to make an educated guess, Welker will open training camp on the physically unable to perform list, and will remain there through at least the first six weeks of the regular season.

Without any sourcing from actual medical specialists, I'll throw this in the "speculation" pile.

I'd say he probably won't be at full speed, but we won't ever really know how far along he is because of the secrecy of the Patriots.

Mike Reiss is a very well respected Patriots insider.

Good for him. He's still not a doctor, and I know that Bellichek's men are very nebulous in defining any injury conditions."Could" and June make me not very concerned about this at the moment.
