We've cut the cable (2 Viewers)

I do the later, but I don't know why I couldn't do the former.  Why should comcast care about the legitimacy of my business I run from my home?  In fact, the prior owner of my house apparently had a business class comcast account.  The cap you speak of, what is it, and is it enforced?  I have a "cap" at 250 GB, but they don't enforce it - and we typically use between 100-200 each month.
We are capped at 350 GB. My wife watches so we wont go over. I guess they will charge if we go over.

Might not just be your area. I've had it for a few days but it's been really spotty here watching the 2nd half of the Texas/UNI game. Almost unwatchable. (Hadn't run into any issues in the time -- albeit rather limited -- I've used prior to tonight)
What's the sound like?  I'm not a big audiophile but I have a pretty good receiver that has some message about the hdmi sound that's coming through. I'll have to figure out what all that means but I'm on a PS4 and I don't have any problems with game sound so it has to be Vue.

I'm not sure which he recommended but I have the Asus RT-N66U, (I got a refurbished one for less than that).  That model isn't an "AC" router, which currently relatively few things take advantage of (the newest iphones and android phones do, the roku 4, the latest amazon fire tv, and very new laptops).  If you want/need an "AC" router, go with the Asus RT-66AC or RT-68AC (slightly newer, but more expensive).
thanks GB, will check that N66U out

Hmm.  Need to figure out this week which to cancel; sling or vue.  Watched Walking Dead on Vue last night with no issues at all, other than the sound.  Sling (on xbox) usually has a couple pause/fast forward a few seconds to catch up buffering issues when watching the more popular shows like that.

Receiver has the following message: "PCM MULTI CH HDMI" and sounds like crap in Dolby/THX.  I have to put it on native surround or simulated surround to make is sound ok and there seems to be a lot of noise in the signal.  Anyone know what might be going on?  Weird because everything usually works great, even games and everything other than Vue on the PS4, with just leaving it in Dolby.

Cancelled Vue today. I thought quality was pretty good from what I did use. (except late Friday night when it was unacceptable/unwatchable with buffering when watched final minutes of the NCAA tourney game). I just realized don't have a use for it. I don't watch much live TV. Just greatly prefer condensed commercial free stuff elsewhere that I can catch a couple hours after the live airing. It's a great deal for $30/mo for what they offer.

Yeah, that's the conclusion I went to. The buffering issues were really bugging me Friday and Saturday night. I love all the soccer options, but I'll keep waiting for the day NBC pulls their heads out of their asses and makes NBC Sports Live Extra available to cord cutters.

Refresh me on which model of ASUS that was?
Asus RT-AC87U.  I have never owned a better router. Disclaimer that I use Apple products and can take advantage of the functionality it brings to those devices and it was like coming out of the stone age.  Very easy for the misses too and that is worth 30-40% of the decision all in itself.

I'm planning on holding out until my Sling 3 month prepayment is up to make a decision about Vue, Sling, or neither (I'm all Roku, so Vue isn't an option yet).

The more I consider both, really the same reasons I cut cable will come into play here. 95% of the time that my TV is on, it's on Netflix/Prime/Hulu or the antenna. Sling service works fine for me (though I know they get a lot of complaints), but like you, I just don't have much interest in live TV anymore.

Whether it's $240 (Sling) or $360 (Vue) a year, that buys an awful lot of TV shows on Amazon. Like cable, you end up paying for access to channels, mostly for the seeming piece of mind to know you have them, but ultimately, it's still a bunch of channels I never watch.

I took the plunge last Saturday. I cancelled satellite and set up an antennae and fire stick. i installed Kodi on the firestick. I have been using exodus for the walking dead. Seemed ok but had some buffering issues. What is the general consensus on the best place to watch shows like the walking dead?

I was able to watch the walking dead fairly soon after it was televised but my wife says it would run better if I wait and watch it the next day. is that true?

Tonight I got to watch 3/4 of Better call Saul. The show just froze up and I couldnt get it to go again. As of right now I am kind of frustrated. I am happy with cutting the bill but I feel like I am going to have to give up on some of the shows I watch.

I've never used Kodi, and have no idea what Exodus is. But as far as I know, AMC shows like Walking Dead and Saul aren't generally going to be available for free (legally). The main ways I know to watch them without cable are via Playstation Vue or Sling, or to just buy the seasons on Amazon (or Google).  Not legal, but you can also watch them on AMC's website provided you have a current cable subscribers login information.

I lean towards buying a lot of shows. It's extremely convenient (I can watch them anytime and anywhere that I can pull up my Amazon Instant Video account). More importantly, I like good content, and as cordcutters, we can't have our cake and eat it too. These people can't keep making these massively expensive shows to be consumed by people unwilling to pay for them. I generally only watch things I like, and think it's important to pay the people that make good content. In the end, it still works out much cheaper than paying a monthly cable subscription. A season pass of Walking Dead is relatively expensive ($42 in HD, $26 in SD), but still that's about half a month's worth of cable for 16 or so hour long episodes. Also about the same price as one night at a movie theater watching another crappy superhero movie.

I'm assuming Exodus is a way to watch content for free (please correct if wrong, as I have no idea). I'm not sure how those streams compare to Sling/Vue or Amazon, but shows stream beautifully on Amazon and generally pretty well on Sling for me. My hunch is that, if the stream quality is different (or you have to search around for good streams on Exodus), this is probably one of those situations in life where you get what you pay for.

Been using Exodus to watch movies on Kodi via the Firestick for about 2 months now and it has been flawless, especially since I upped my Internet speed to 24 Mbs (was at 6 Mbs), no buffering issues at all.

I think 'll give Vue a shot during the free preview to see how it goes.

We do this for a lot of networks ... FX, USA, ESPN, NBC Sports, CNBC, etc.  Of course we only watch when the person we borrowed it from are over haha  :P

Check out this link.

http://androidpcreview.com/fix-kodi-buffering-problems-heres-how-to-modify-the-kodi-cache/2611/

I modified some of these settings and went from the occasional buffering issues to zero. There are other items that would be different between our setups (WiFi, ISP provider, streaming device) but this is certainly something that should help if not resolve your issue.

I know in my case this fix worked well when I had my slower speed internet.  Since I bumped up the speed, buffering doesn't seem to be a problem on the Firestick

I think overall though, this works very well as a fix for the buffering issue.  I've seen this same/or similar fix touted on many websites.

I'm actually having some issues with exodus, or maybe I just don't know how to properly use it.  When in "movies" it looks like you can select "people" (I would think it means actors" and search that way, but you select it and it does nothing.  Same thing when selecting a lot of things, it just doesn't go anywhere.

hmmm, maybe dump it and try reloading it using addon installer.

Ive used the main search (scroll all the way to the bottom of the Exodus search page) many times and have had no issues.  Ive found a lot of older stuff that way (Just watched Hearts of Darkness and The Search for General Tso docs the other night).  Of course if there is no stream available, that happens at times, the system lets me know that nothing came of my search.  Ive never tried searching "people" inside the "movie" page like you've described though so I cant help you there.

I've never tried searching people either, but, will give it a go tonight.  I always use the main search like Bronco, or use People Watching to browse to see what new movies might be out.  You have to spell it exactly right, does not spell check, and try with and without commas, apostrophes etc.

All those are on AMC which you can get with Slingtv.

The only thing you really need a VPN for is if you are downloading copyrighted material via torrent etc.  It's nice to have if for Kodi, but, not a necessity, imo.  I also use it to spoof my IP address at NFL.com so I can get NFL ticket for $125.  Plus it's just nice to have for as little as $3/month.  You don't need a VPN to just cut cable legitimately.
How are you accessing NFL.com? Via Kodi?

Sounds like he is using VPN to establish an overseas connection where folks can get a cheap discount on NFL ticket (my German friend pays $125 or so to get the same ticket that DTV charges $300+ for).

Is this an option, until or if I don't go the VPN route? Or does DirecTV basically pay to have exclusive stateside rights to Sunday Ticket? How about RedZone?

What Shutout said.  VPN your IP address to a country like Turkey (non-North America) and you can get NFL Ticket, Redzone, Network, everything.  You can still use your regular address and US credit card no problem.  Just go to NFL.com with an IP from a different country.

This works best with a HTPC so your TV is acting like a PC monitor.  Although I'm sure there are work arounds for other devices I've had problems getting the Gamecast App for to work for iPad for example.  iTunes won't let you get the Gamecast app with a US account in the Turkey iStore.

VPN is as easy as installing an app and pushing a button.  Direct TV pays the NFL billions for exclusive rights in the US, Canada and Mexico.  Redzone is available some other places like cable tv providers.

ETA: You can pay the premium directly to NFL.com, but, they even have some blackout restriction within the US.

Apple is so cute:

Yesterday (3/21) Apple announced their great new update to the Apple TV in an effort to change the way we get our entertainment. So what was that great innovation from Apple? Folders. Oh, yeah, we also got voice dictation to fix what may be the most annoying keyboard of any streaming media player.   iCloud Photos Library is something the Fire TV has done for almost two years now. Folders have been used by Android streaming boxes for years. The apps shown off are just a fraction of the apps that Roku has. No Playstation Vue, Sling TV, Amazon Video, or hundreds of other great must have apps for cord cutters. Heck this idea that apps are the future of TV is insulting to companies like Roku and Google who have had streaming players with apps for many years.

Works for me. Typed in "Cruz" and brought up dozens of actors with the last name Cruz.

I am almost 100% sure that the Apple comparable Vue/Sling live TV app will present negative value. If you only play within their eco system, they'd have you buying everything you consume a la carte like it's the late 2000's. But, it's an Apple product/service, so enough lemmings will get it to make it a profitable venture.

The Great Unbundling NPR Planet Money podcast discussing the "other" side of cordcutting.

Not that it means people shouldn't cut the cord, but there will be some downsides. I think we're in the sweet spot right now. There are a million affordable options for cordcutters right now, but the traditional cable TV model is still the norm, by far. Meaning cable companies and channels still have boatloads of people to subsidize the content and services, so that cable/internet providers don't have to worry as much about maximizing every penny from cordcutters.

I don't understand Apple TV at all. Is it really $150 for a device that won't stream Amazon, Vue, or Sling? I know more people that have an Apple TV than that have a Roku or Fire TV though.

Listened on my commute into work today. I think the sweet spot is the Vue/Sling model. Cable providers sneak in all sorts of local broadcast fees, HD fees, etc. nonsense fees on top of the crown jewel which is equipment rental. With Vue/Sling, sure you're still paying for a bundle of live TV channels, but it's a flat price and done. You buy the equipment like an Amazon fire stick or other compatible streaming device and keep your bill down, not eliminated. Cable TV provider still provides the internet infrastructure to get Vue/Sling, so they're getting theirs. It's more of a revolt  against how Cable TV providers mercilessly nickel and diming customers over equipment and miscellaneous fees that do add up. You're still paying, but you have more control and don't have to feel like the only game in town local TV provider has a gun to your head for ~$50-60 in equipment fees a month + other small fees that add up.

We have the old Apple TV (and a Roku) and no plans to upgrade to the new one... I got the old one on sale and it works out well because we bought the kids seasons of Mickey, Sophia, etc off iTunes when we got rid of cable (ie... Disney Jr).  Otherwise we just use the Roku for everything.

yahoo article about how cordcutting has turned the $8 billion Dodgers/Time Warner deal into a cluster####. TW is taking a bath, LA residents with DirecTV, Cox, or Verizon can't watch Vin Scully's final season, and of course, none of this will help MLB reach desperately needed young viewers who are also more likely to be cordcutters.

Hopefully this cluster#### is one step closer to MLB teams offering ala carte access to local teams (whether it's lifting blackout restrictions or the networks themselves offering streaming packages).

Watching the hockey tourney on Vue. Working like a charm.

Has the same annoying feature as Sling though...the same damn commercials every break.

However, it's super cool that I can have one show playing on the PS4 and another on my iPad.

New live TV addon for Kodi: TV Time.

Haven't tried it out yet, but, tvaddons felt like they needed to release a new list for all of Kodi's best live tv apps, because as they put it:

It seems that Kodi addons providing access to live television and sports and have been getting more reliable as time progresses. At one point in time, watching reliable sports and live television through Kodi addons was just a dream, whereas it is now a reality and only getting better by the day.

Between this and Vue, I cannot wait to cancel my Comcast TV sub in August once I'm out of the woods for an ETF on my 2-year contract.
Hoping this sticks around.  I'll be off DirecTV in May and will be using this and Vue as well.

Love the avatar tonydead

TV Time has 28 live US channels.  Searching for a channel line up right now.
Does this have a guide? I think that's the crown jewel. While I appreciate the streams that you can get access to within Kodi apps, it stinks not having a guide to tell you what's on while surfing. That would really complete the experience IMO.

Again, I am not knocking the stick. Great device but it absolutely doesn't have the same specs as the FireTV. The FireTV is is quadcore 2GHz Snapdragon ARMv7 and the stick is dualcore 1GHz from Broadcom. You mention you use your stick for Kodi and don't notice any lag. Id the content HD content? Are you streaming any content that has surround sound? How you use your device and what content you access makes a difference. If you have the stick and aren't experiencing any issues that it obviously is the device that best suits your needs. The following link does a decent job in explaining the differences and runs some tests on the speed/specs of each device.

hey bud, so i watched a movie on the stick this past weekend that was marked as HD but clearly wasn't (about DVD Screener quality). I've also noticed the past few movies i've checked out are marked as HD but are about the same quality. Would it have been HD on the box?

No, I wouldn't think so. If it is listed as HD and the stick can play it then it should display in HD. I've never experienced this as everything I've watched in HD has certainly been at least 720p. I can only guess two things:

1) It was mislabeled (and again...I've never had this happen to me).

2) Your WiFi isn't able to keep up with the bandwidth needed and it slows it just enough to the point where it can keep playing but can't render in full HD. I've seen this on rare occasions with my Kodi box but when it does happen it only lags for like 5 seconds and slips to what looks like SD.

Thanks... Its definitely not my WiFi. Speed testing on WiFi and it has more than enough. Could it have been on the servers side?

I ask cause now that I think about it... I've watched some HD movies on the stick and also some streaming sports.

For reference, the movie I'm talking about is dead pool with the Asian subtitles on exodus.

I'm finding that what Exodus labels as 1080P/HD/SD isn't very accurate.  They probably scrape that info from all the websites along with titles etc. and the websites false advertise that it is HD to get people to download/watch their stream.  It's the same reason that sometimes when you go to watch movie like Daddy's Home, and even though it says it's the 2016 version you get some 1980's movie that happened to have the same title.

I'll check the exact movie you are talking about tonight to be sure, but, I'm guessing if it's still an Asian sub then it's probably still only in SD.

I don't think it has anything to do with your hardware, unless you know the movie has been out on DVD for a while there may not be a HD version available yet.
