We've cut the cable (3 Viewers)

I got Kodi on it!  How do I watch the UFC?  Do I need to put a VPN on it?
Sportsdevil app. Look for the btsports streams. YMMV with live tv, Kodi really excels with recorded tv and shows.

I personally don't worry about a vpn unless you're using it to download the shows. Nothing illegal about watching a stream.

Is there a good Fire Stick Kodi build?  Titanium seems to be a bit too much for it... is there a slimmer build I can point people to when they ask about Kodi, rather than telling them about individual streams?

Something with a small collection like:

  • 1channel
  • Exodus
  • SportsDevil
  • USATVNow
Really, that's >90% of what I use on Kodi.

VPN and SmoothStreams TV via Kodi @ $30/quarter for me. It's a private streaming service, not a sporting event out there that's televised somewhere on earth that I can't watch in at least 540p/720p for major College games and all pro games and PPV fights with just about 0 buffer. I do that on Comcast pipes, it's the biggest :finger: that I can give to them.
Smooth Streams TV streaming the UFC PPV card in 1080 with 0 buffer. Just  .

They operate different sites to load balance sub quality and buffering. Currently taking registrations at mystreams.tv Worth a look.

Just took a quick look this morning before opening redzone on PS Vue... New firetv layout, did Kodi disappear? Didn't dig too hard.

New Fire TV layout is like Netflix, Kodi didn't disappear - mine was the first choice listed.
Thanks I'll check it out again later. I had it as one of my favorites and it's always 1/2/3 on recent apps but wasn't on there this morning.

Mine hasn't been showing up in recents for a long time.  Settings>Applications>Manage All Installed Applications>Kodi>Launch

Directv Now rumors they want to raise the price.

Directv Now blacks out local NFL games on Fox, didn't get the rights for NFL in the Fox contract.

:lmao:

ETA: DirecTV has also been suggesting subscribers use an antenna to watch the game.

:lmao:   They can't get out of their own way.

Tried a 7 day trial on DTV Now. Expected some hiccups but the buffering was way too much in the hour-two I tried it. Buffered on average I'd say once every 5-10 mins. May try again in future. Just watch little live TV and that's all UFC which can get on Kodi/Youtube. Anyone that's ever had D-TV knows their prices will increase quickly. That "locked in" $35 price won't last long.

Can't remember where I read it recently (may have been this thread) but Sling is having a box that'll give locals in future (if it's not out already).

Can you not get Jeopardy over the air?
I have the roof -mounted OTA antenna but use it pretty much exclusively for watching NFL games on the basement TV. I could watch Jeopardy down there but really want to watch it on the main family room TV.

Good suggestion though.

Four new services to launch next year

Hulu Live

Fubo

Youtube

Vidgo

Sling and Vue keep adding new channels.

DirectvNow keeps blacking out NFL, dropping channels, having technical issues and rumored to be raising prices.   :lmao:

Is your signal good enough to split it to the family room TV? Or if you don't want to fool with that, is your signal good enough to get away with an indoor antenna in the family room?

For most places, the basement is the hardest place to get reception, so if you are getting it there, it should be pretty doable to get it in the family room (assuming the family room is higher elevation).

I am finally ready to upgrade my archaic internet service (I think I might have the slowest speed in the country.  Comcast said they don't even offer the speed any more : ) )

The Co,mcast deals are horrible so I am looking into FIOS.

What speed should I target if I want to have solid, non buffering (at least due to download speeds) quality for streaming?   It looks like I can choose from 50, 100 and 150 download speeds.

Can I get away with just the 50?  We are a small family and with only child moving away to college next year, we will almost never stream more than one item at a time in the house.

50 can give you 3 or 4 HD streams simultaneously. If you stream 4K it will give you at two, maybe three.

Avatar, well done.

I'm not cutting the cable yet, but slowly upgrading stuff.

Santa brought me a Fire TV this year which only has HDMI.

Easy questions for you gurus in here.

My old ### receiver / sound system works great with cable, but doesn't have HDMI in or out so the Fire TV thing is just going straight into the TV for now. The sound is weak just using the TV's speakers.

Is this a setup that is possible: Get a new receiver with multiple HDMI in/out. The Cable Box and Fire TV both go HDMI into the receiver and then HDMI out to the TV allowing the receiver / sound system to work for both Cable and Fire TV.

Is there a better way to do this?

I haven't dealt with this stuff in awhile and have become stupid.

Yeah, probably best to let your receiver handle the switching then your sound should always match your video being displayed.  You probably will want a receiver which can handle 4K video.

Most TVs have a sound out port, so whatever source the TV is getting sound from it sends it out through that port. Just plug that into the receiver.

Great call. It's dark back there but there was an optical out from the TV which was being used was by the DVD player that we haven't used for years so just snagged that cable. Prolly time to ditch the DVD   Man I'm rusty..used to know all this stuff.

Now I don't even have a Smart TV :kicksrock:

More stuff to buy.

Don't buy a smart TV - it does nothing that the Fire TV doesn't do, and generally has a worse interface.

After reading through this thread and the Kodi one as well my overall take is yeah there are options out there to cut the cable but it just seems like an overall hassle when you do.

Instead of just going old school and flipping through the channels you have to know specifically what you want to watch.  Plus with the Kodi it doesnt appear to be very user friendly the interface seems clunky.  Add in the fact that the DVR feature or lackthereof I think I am sticking with DirectTV until someone can figure out how to streamline all of this to make it easier to use.

Fair enough conclusion.  In my opinion, only watching what you specifically know you want to watch is a positive change in our household.

Oh absolutely but I still love plunking down on the couch and just scrolling through the menu for random stuff.

Its a totally different way (and absolutely better) of watching TV but its hard to break away from the only thing you have done.  I imagine once things get more organized and I am sure they will then "cutting the cord" is going to make sense but as I said above it just seems to scattershot as it stands today.  Too many accounts (Hulu, amazon, netflix etc) too many apps within apps etc to overcome the simplicity of directtv

I can not disagree with you. I believe we are coming up on one year of cutting the cable. I will say it has become easier because it is becoming the only thing I know. My decision was based on economics only. I am saving a nice chunk of change going this route. I would say if economics were not a concern I would go back to direct tv tomorrow.

how much were you paying?  I am around $100 so its not that bad to me

Channel surfing is one of the things that I miss.

Thanks all for the help ... we have cut the cord successfully for a full year now and love it!

The reason I know it's been over a year, is Comcast / Xfinity just jacked the monthly price up for 75mbps internet from $50 to $85.  Any success stories or tips for when I call these guys to negotiate?  Should I go to the b&m store like I did initially for the deal?  Yes, it's "only" $35 ... but it's the principle of the thing.  I only read back through the last couple pages, so apologies if I should have just dug deeper.  Happy Holidays, you guys.

Sounds like a new crackdown on torrent sites is coming. Only 10 years too late and 5 years after anyone truly needed them.

Keeping track of all the great shows out there, mainly because we aren't reminded by commercials anymore, we are never caught up with everything we want to see.  Have zero reason to channel surf.

I think we were around $75.00

I know to some that may not be much but it is all relative and that is a lot to us. I am now paying $30.00 using Hulu,Netflix, and Kodi.
So devils advocate here you are basically netting $45 and losing all of the convenience.  I am sure it will get better but right now that doesnt really warrant it for me.  Congrats on figuring all of this stuff out

 Yeah it is what it is. That $45.00 means something to our family. I realize it may not to many.

No man I get it totally.  I just dont have the patience or technical skills to completely cut the cable.  I would end up throwing the remote through the TV when I couldnt find what I was looking for.

Looking back I'd cut the cable just again just based on principle alone even if the net gain was zero.  We went from $230 a month to $70 though so a huge win for us.

I get the hassle argument if you're trying to run Kodi and aren't tech savvy, but, the other pay for options are about as easy as it gets.  Plug and play, everyone knows how to download an app.

Outside of Amazon, netflix, hula etc what are you referring to here?  Or is that what you meant?  Is there a pay app where I can watch any sport?

I like vue more than cable. If they were the same price (vue is way, way cheaper for me at least) I would still use vue. I get to use the devices I already own and I like the I interface a lot more. Those of you who have cut the cord and miss channel surfing should look at vue or sling, it's the exact same thing.

The middle package for Vue gets you NFL Network, NBAtv, all the ESPN and Fox stuff, NBCSN, and Bein for 35 bucks. You can also purchase redzone if you want. I watch an embarrassing amount of sports and haven't missed a thing.

Slingtv

Vue

SFN Now

DirectvNow

And coming soon in 2017: Hulu Live, Youtube tv and Vidgo.

You'd have to go through the channel lineups and see what gets you the sports you want.  Most all of the basic packages include ESPN and most have NFL network for an extra $5.  A lot of the packages get you SEC Network, NBCSN, etc. etc.  Best part is there are no strings or contracts; when you are done with college football you can cancel all together, switch to a lower package or switch providers with a push of the button.

BTW, everyone complaining about loss of DVR functionality without purchasing an expensive streaming box keep your pants on; SFN has one, Sling has one in beta right now and I'm sure others are going to follow suit.

Is it easy to toggle through multiple basketball and football games with these options?

OK. Family received a couple of Roku sticks for Christmas.

Between kids and the wife & I, would like ABC, CBS, NBC, ESPN, Fox, Fox Sports, Disney, HBO and possibly STARZ.

According to a few friends, Sling, Hulu, Amazon and Netflix seem to cover most, if not all of that. True?

Paying over $220 for internet, cable and phone with Comcast. No need for phone since daughters both have phones now. Would love to cut cable and save some $$$.

The best thing to do is get abc/cbs/nbc with a over the air antenna for free and then you will be able to get a small package from either vue or sling for $20-$35 plus hbo for $15. If not you'll have to get the big package for all the channels, the best probably being vue for $55  that includes hbo and Showtime. The locals may or may not be available in your area yet though, you'll have to check. Just go to their websites and check out the different packages.

Either way you should be able to get cable only from Comcast for around $60, plus your package and cut your bill at least in half!! :o

I think hulu prime has stars if you must. Otherwise hulu/Netflix/amazon are only needed if you want their original series and/or movie library. Although hulu live tv launches sometime in 2017.

If you're a Sling guy you need this!

I would give up my youngest child to have integrated OTA in an Amazon devise.*  Whoa, wait a minute, this is an android devise.  We ought to be able to get APKs on there!!!!!!

*j/k, i don't have any children.

I wonder for some of the prices quoted in here, do they include the price of internet access, too? Or is it just the cost of the services you signed up for such as Hulu, Netflix, etc.

Here again and not to beat a dead horse but is the savings in this scenario really worth the convenience of a single provider?  Because what you posted above seems like a lot of back and forth and you still are having to pay monthly for various things and they are in no doubt going to increase as time goes on.

$60 for internet and $20-55 for either Sling or Vue.  That's it.  Where is this back and forth you speak of?

I do remember the back and forth with the cable company though with hidden fees, rate hikes, contracts, equipment fees, taxes, strings attached ugh.  What a mess that used to be.

~$60 for 50Mbps of internet.

$20-$55 dollars for a streaming service provider (Vue or Sling)

Optional:  Netflix, Hulu, Amazon prime, each around $10.
