We've cut the cable (3 Viewers)

Firestick or Roku.

Please stop listing Apple TV with those two. That's like listing Smart Cars with Lexus and Acura. They're cute to look at, but only weird people own them.
I would go with a Fire TV not the Fire Stick.  I guess Roku might be Ok as well. I have limited experience with my Roku Extreme. It does the trick but I think it compares more with the Fire Stick than the Fire TV.

I have both a Roku Stick and a Roku 3. The Roku 3 is a much better experience than the Roku Stick. This is because the 3 has room for more horsepower than can be fit in the stick.

I assume the same holds true for the stick version of Apple TV vs the box version of it.

I received this e-mail today and am pretty excited and interested. Tell me what you think.

Dear Member:

We believe as a member of Mid-Carolina Electric Cooperative, you deserve access to exceptional internet service. That’s why we’ve formed CarolinaConnect, an affiliate company created to provide faster, reliable, and more affordable internet service.

We’ve begun network construction and are already looking to our next phase of fiber optic installation. Several factors determine where and when we build next, one of them being co-op member demand for improved internet service.

So, if you’re interested, visit www.carolinaconnect.com and join the list now. This will get you into the system, letting us gauge member interest and provide you updates as your area is green-lighted for installation. Joining this list does not commit you to purchasing the service. If you are already on our waiting list, no action is required.

While building fiber to more than 50,000 members takes time, we ask you to consider waiting on CarolinaConnect as opposed to choosing lesser quality internet providers, many of whom demand binding contracts. CarolinaConnect will bring lightning-fast speeds at affordable prices, with the service reliability you’ve come to expect from your electric cooperative. We’re working every day to bring it to you as quickly as possible.

With warm regards,

B. Robert Paulling
President and CEO
Mid-Carolina Electric Cooperative

Currently on a Vue free trial. Loving it. Question for those who know: I see something about limiting to 5 streams. If I have 3 TVs, 2 tablets and 2 phones, does that mean I can only put the app and register on 5 of those devices? Or that I can register all 7 and only use 5 at the same time?

I think it's the latter. You can only stream to 5 devices at the time. At least that's how I understood it.

Free Fire stick (with Alexa voice remote) when you buy 1 month of directv NOW. Limited time offer, new subscribers only)

Still working on cutting the cord. Two more questions for anyone that knows:

We have coaxial cords running throughout the house to different TVs from one splitter. If I get an OTA antenna, attached it to a digital tuner or whatever, then run that output into the existing splitter, will I get the OTA channels on all the TVs that get output from the signal? Or does each TV need a separate tuner or something between the coaxial splitter on the TV?

Secondly, have a bunch of movies on UV since that was how they were redeemed for years. It looks like Amazon does not support VUDU or Flixster, so is there a different way to get to those movies in my UV library? Or can I only get to them through a non-Amazon streaming device?

If the tuner is before the split, then the signal the rest of the house gets will be the one channel the tuner is tuned into. In fact, the rest of the house couldn't use a tuner as there are no channels in the signal they are getting. It's just one video signal. You would have to use the TV's coax video input, not the coax antenna input. You would also have to come up with a way to change the channel while being in a rome different than the tuner.

You can split an OTA antenna signal so that the rest of the house can have their own tuners and tune into different channels simultaneously. Keep in mind that every split and every foot of cable weakens the signal. If you do it this way, plug the cable into the coax antenna input, and not the coax video input. You can use the TV remote to change the channel.

Don't know anything about the second question.

I don't know the answer, but I would say that it won't be an issue because you will likely change your movie watching habits.  If you want to watch a movie, you'll probably just stream it.  Also, instead of watching movies you already own, you'll probably watch something new since you have access to so many.

Could be wrong, of course... but I think it will be like the transition many people have made with music - my kids will never own a CD or .mp3 because they'll stream everything they want to hear.  It certainly went that way with us - we never use DVDs any more.  Even in the car on road trips, we have some movies on a Sandisk that the kids stream from via bluetooth.

Unless you have an old CRT television from the turn of the century you do not need a digital tuner.  Very very few flat panel tvs were ever built without a HD digital tuner included inside. Just split that coax to each tv and search ota channels and your tv will tell you what channels are available and you can switch channels with your tv remote.  As Spock said though, you loose signal through each splitter (~9db) and in long runs of coax.  A signal amplifier can be installed, as close to the antenna as you can get it, if you need to boost the signal.

You will have to see if there is a Vudu and/or Flixster app available for your streaming device.  For these streaming devices you download apps just like you do for your phone.  Like you've hinted, I'd guess your more likely to find one on Roku than Firetv.

My daughter is visiting my brother's house for the first time.  She just sent me a bunch of confused texts - she can't understand how they can watch hockey 18 hours per day.  In our house, we watch very little TV, and when we do, it's in a corner of the house and we pay attention to it.  My brother's house is one of those that has the TV on at all times (usually NHL Network) in the house's central room, and they pay half-attention to it.  My daughter didn't realize that it's just filler, and they're fine having conversations over the top of it.

It's weird - that's how my brother and I grew up, but it's completely foreign to my daughter.

I only have Netflix and my brother's HBO Go, but it's been easier than I thought it would be to get used to not having cable TV.

Version and Comcast to launch streaming services by the end of 2017.  Century Link rumored too, although it just might be a resell of DirectvNow.

Yes, I'm one of those.  What will it be available on?
Anything you own that has apps has the Amazon streaming video app available on it.  iOS, Fire Stick, smart TV, Android device, whatever.

Was afraid of that.  So the roku in the bedroom will work, but I'd rather watch it in the living room where I have a chrome cast. Guess I'll have to move some stuff around, or upgrade.

You can cast from Amazon's web site to your Chrome Cast device

My father tells me he's looking at ditching the TV service they have, and going with PS Vue. On a Fire Stick. I think he can probably figure that out.

Question, though, is if it's possible for me to also install Kodi for him on the fire stick and let him have that as an alternate. Can the stick have 2 options on it?
Would DirecTV Now or Youtube TV be easier for him?

I sideloaded the YouTube TV app on the firestick tonight, and got a message on launching the app that Youtube TV requires Google Play Services.  I suppose I could sideload those too?

Yes I have that set up on one of my devices, haven't had any issues

Read many good reviews.  I'm an Asus guy, but this is tempting.
Yes, I'm an asus guy as well.  I have their top of the line "non-AC" router currently.  Bought it used.refurbished for $50 I believe, and it's been going strong for 3 years now.

It won't save all of it's settings after a power outage, but I think that's user error more than anything.

nighthawk is legit

not sure about that particular model but I know the higher end models are top in the game
