We've cut the cable (2 Viewers)

I was thinking HBO was going to be cheaper for the online only option. I guess they couldn't undercut the cable prices too much or no one would subscribe through cable anymore.
Yeah, but there isn't any HD fee, cable box rental, modem rental or tax with the online subscription. People are smarter than that right?

Fair points. I just guess I was expecting something along the price point of Netflix. Probably just me being cheap.

Yeah, after trying a bit more over the last week...the Roku 2 just can't handle Sling TV.

Does everything else really well...Netflix, Hulu, Vudu. But not Sling.

Local channels, sling, hbo go and Netflix with high speed internet would be a nice package for less than 100 bucks a month.
Except Comcast internet w/o the video subscription (and customer owned equipment) is ~$75 all-in, speaking for Comcast customers. I had that when I had DirecTV a few years ago. I wanted ST, so it was what it was. Now, I have bundled Comcast X1 video and internet w/all basic channels and HBO is $105/mo for 2 years +$5 for RZ during football season. I have Comcast internet only coming in price wise @ ~75 + Sling ($20 for base) + Netflix ($8) = $103. At the end when I had internet only, they threw in HBO for free w/Internet only, so I will add that as well to the example to be conservative. Even still, I'm coming out even and at that point would prefer to just roll with the old and not juggle apps/missing channels here and there/on demand for recent TV shows and old ones, etc.

Where I'm going with this is I feel like the cable companies need to come in at a better price point for internet only, and the chances of that happening are about the same I'd assume as Verizon and AT&T going back to unlimited data wireless. They're getting money out of you one way or another, and if it's at the same price point I feel like it's forcing a square peg through a round hole just to "cut the cord."

You should be able to find a better rate than that. Call them, say you want to cancel, and they'll offer you promo deal.

They have 50mbps internet for $40 for 12 months. When that's up call again.
I'm a bring your own equipment customer and have been for years, so yeah I'm on the lookout for deals. I got stonewalled after hanging up and calling back at least 4-5 times before giving up when trying to extend the internet only deals like the one above @ $40/mo. It's no longer applicable to my situation, but I have to imagine any internet only customers are in this boat. If you can get them to extend the new customer promos indefinitely w/o video, you are better than I am on the phone. They (Comcast) would only bite if I bit on video.

When you call do you tell them you want to cancel? You have to get sent to retentions to get good deals.

Always. If you're internet only, you get the "well, we dare you" response. Video, they roll out the red carpet with deals.

ETA: But yeah, if in that scenario (or currently) I could get internet + everything else cheap enough to make it worth my while, I'd be done with cable forever and not look back. Looks like it's a total YMMV thing, have to pay the piper for some sort of infrastructure.

Go into the Xfinity store and talk to someone in person. I just dropped off all my equipment (I'll post a summary and $$ saved in a few minutes) and the customer service compared to someone on the phone is night and day. She told me I had to pay the full price for one month ($69 for 50Mbps) while the billing sorted out but to come back and see her in 30 days and she'd get me on a promotion. She said, "Come in, don't call anyone on the phone". I said, "Yeah I don't like those phone people, no offence". She said, "Yeah, we all know". No questions asked, no sales pitch, no waiting line, took less than 5 minutes.

Got lucky for March Madness. SlingTV carries TNT and TBS and CBS is one of the few OTA HD signals I get reliably. The other that comes in pretty well is Fox. Made me realize between ESPN on SlingTV, OTA CBS, and OTA Fox, I may be in better shape than I expected for Football in the Fall. The problems will be SNF on NBC, Thursday games on NFL Network, and playoff games on NBC.

On the non-sports side we've been ok on content so far. I'm caught up to season 5 on Walking Dead and we just started House of Cards. My wife has her Jimmy Fallon and The Voice on Hulu+. Kids have cartoons through SlingTV, Hulu+, and Netflix. For whole family viewing we've been on AFV, The Voice, MasterChef (Jr & Sr), etc.

What do you guys have as your go to shows and content?
Aren't all of the SNF games streaming on NBCsports.com?

Not sure about the playoffs, but that still is only 2 games, right?

CABLE IS OFFICIALLY CUT – OVER $130 SAVINGS A MONTH

Comcast:

Old plan was bundled service HD Preferred Plus XF base rate of $194.95 plus $29.90 in equipment rental fees. New plan is Performance Internet 50Mbps base rate of $69.99 plus $20 for Sling. Unless I have to trouble shoot with a technician I’m never going to call Comcast on the phone again. Customer Service in person at an Xfinity store is top notch, see post #1780. After 30 days I can get the promotion price of 50Mbps for $39.99 or 105Mbps for $64.99.

HTPC:

I went expensive and built one for $500, but, you could easily do one for $300 or less that will provide a media interface for your entertainment center, show recording and all the other things you might do while connected to the internet. I am currently running Windows Media Center for TV because Plex does not do OTA TV. For streaming downloaded media Plex is installed and working with my office PC that is acting as the server where all the storage is. The Hauppauge video card with remote is painless and works great.

XBOXOne:

There are work arounds available for getting OTA channels on the XBOX and it comes with Windows Media Center, however, I don’t think it has recording capabilities. Sling is new and available on XBOX, but, I found it really buggy still compared to Sling on the Roku 3 or Android tablet. Plex is coming to XBOX; currently it’s only available to Pass subscribers. My HTPC can go through the XBOX HDMI pass through with no issues.

Roku 3:

If you aren’t a techie and/or don’t want to spend a bunch of cash on hardware Roku 3 works great. $50 with prepaid 3 months of Sling makes it a no-brainier. We have it in the bedroom and it streams Sling and Plex over Wifi almost flawlessly. The only issue is it doesn't take OTA TV so we have the OTA going directly into the TV and we have to keep changing sources back and forth.

I still don't see the need for a HTPC. Seems a lot of money to spend to get something very marginally better than what an Xbox gives you and you don't get the games.

Apples and oranges. Short answer. Unlimited PVR storage, integrated live tv, full computer access. Oh, and pretty sure gaming on a computer rig is a thing.

For the most part I agree with you. But here are the advantages:

The ability to record.

The ability to rip.

The ability to share.

Unlimited customization.

Unlimited plug ins that work.

No file type or performance issues.

Future proof: unlimited expand-ability where as you'll be buying the next gaming console in a couple years (and so will I).

Remote access.

Oh, and computers play games too. We got to do something with all that money we're not giving to the cable companies.

I just have no need for a PVR anymore. I mean what the hell would I record? I either watch live sports or streaming content that I pull primarily from streaming sites I hardly ever even need to torrent crap anymore.

I can't think of a show on that I'm like "Oh wow I need to record this or I'll never be able to watch it" seems so 2006 to me.

What content do you have that I can't just go to KAT and get exactly? I mean obviously do what you want, but this layer seems needlessly complex given the availability of media that is there now.

I'm not worried about me, but rather my parents.

Hey MCg see any reason Plex won't play sound for me on htpc? Video all play fine on Roku and WMC plays the mp4s (of course it doesn't recognize mvk). It's not the files or the hardware, it's got to be between Plex and Windows 8.1. Didn't you say you went with 7?

You can't get my home movies or photos from KAT for example. And it would take you a long long time to get my 500GB worth of music that I might listen to at any given moment. Sure I could carry a hard drive around with me everywhere I went and just plug it into the xbox, but, I'd prefer just to stream whatever whenever I want and the server will do automatic downloads and back-ups.

Which files are not working?
All of them. I'm trying to get the Plex Home Theater to work. All play video with zero sound. I've only tried MP4 and MVK. All the same files play fine on Roku. WMC will play the same MP4 files fine. I might try the Windows 8 App as a lot of the posts on the Plex forum seem to like that better.

Also, I haven't messed with the settings in at all in either the Plex Server or Plex Home Theater. I'll figure it out, I just thought maybe you might have ran into something similar, then maybe not since you are on Windows 7.

Thanks.

Turn off transcoding in Plex.

The other thing I don't like is Plex Home Theater doesn't accept a remote control (at least from what I've read). If I have to use a keyboard I might as well use some other video player while I'm at it.

I just use the keyboard to get into the program and then my WMC remote can do the rest. The remote just can't open the Plex program to start.

Doesn't Plex show up as a plug-in to WMC? Just go there first and then choose Plex?

ETA: I'm the exact opposite, I can do the above to open Plex and then my remote stops working. :lmao:

I think I'm also going to install a codec pack so WMC can play all file types. I haven't done that in a long time so I don't know which codec packs are reliable. Can anyone comment on shark007?

Or for $20 a year get unlimited music storage on Amazon streaming wherever you want it in addition to their Prime Music offering.

Plex is software. Your hardware is what accepts a remote. Get a Roku or some other hardware that will run Plex with a remote. If you are using something like a Raspberry Pi you would need to get an IR/USB dongle and Plex can be remotely controlled.

You have to read the fine print:

"Amazon says only photos smaller than 2 MB may be uploaded to Cloud Drive, in one of eight allowed file formats. Photographers with high-end cameras often produce images that range from 5 GB to 30 GB, or possibly more. Also, while Amazon allows videos under 20 minutes to be uploaded to Cloud Drive, it mentions only photos as eligible for unlimited Prime Photo storage; other files count against Cloud Drive storage limits."

Pretty useless for me, plus I don't like the idea of my naked vacation photos in the cloud.

I'm talking specifically Plex's Home Theater, not the device apps. I tend to agree with you about the hardware/software, even if the software didn't support a remote all you would have to do is "fool it" into thinking the buttons on the remote were the up/down/left/right/enter buttons on the keyboard. I had just read on the Plex forums that Home Theater didn't take a mouse natively, but, after MCGuidance's post I think that must have been an old post.

Yes, Haupauge card that came with a remote. The remote has a button that opens WMC, works in WMC and will open Plex via add-in to WMC. After Plex opens the remote stops working. I haven't messed around with settings or anything. If your remote operates Plex then I'm sure it's just a matter of changing settings and/or programming the remote.

I just installed the Shark007 codec pack and now Windows Media Center will play any video container I throw at it. I'll just use it while I mess around with Plex. I kind of like it's interface for a media center better anyway. If you try this mount the download with 7zip and install the executable inside, that way you avoid any accidental adware install.

History/H2/Lifetime/A&E now available on Sling. FYI & LMN also available as well if you have Lifestyle Extra package.

Note to those who think they can turn old PCs into HTPCs: If your CPU is single core and only has an AGP slot, just forget about it. I'll just go ahead and build one. I already have a wishlist going thanks to MCguidance's website.

The HD antenna just would not get all the signals in my setup, but thankfully I'm moving cities next week and I'll be situated much, much closer to the broadcast towers (1-3 miles), so I should be good to go.

I also won't bother getting cable TV at my new location. Pretty much ready to go.

Well, looks like I may have a solution. Today two reps from my cable... now just internet company (RCN) were walking around my neighborhood. They had a list of subscribers and were checking around for potential upgrades, etc. They said they noticed I had internet only and asked if I was interested in cable. I explained how I recently cut cable and was fine with my current setup. Long story short, they offered to give me back an HD DVR box (for free) with the local HD channel tier including networks for a couple bucks more a month. Total package will stay under $60/month. I'll also have the option to add tiers on a la cart in the future so I can add Redzone and the "Sports" tier with NFL Network for football season. Worst case they up the price after a year or something and I just cancel again.

Guess the cable companies are starting to worry a bit?

As they should. Now's the time to call and get handouts from your current provider.

If Sling keeps its core package & is able to keep offering new $5 packages (and also allow streaming on more than one device), more and more people are going to start switching.

JMO Sony Vue is a bit overpriced. Less # channels that cable package at same price and price isn't any different. (No way could I pay $70/mo with no ESPN/NFLN etc...) Not to mention you currently need a PS3/PS4.
