We've cut the cable (6 Viewers)

Hulu Plus v. Netflix - which would you choose?
As best I can tell, the appeal of Hulu Plus is shows that are currently running a day or two later. I have both and definitely prefer Netflix. IMO, better selection of previous seasons of shows, and a better selection of movies.
So its interesting.

We decided to drop directv, and went with both netflix and hulu plus. One of the things I noticed with Hulu Plus, after the fact, is that it seems that many of the shows current shows can't be streamed directly to the TV. Not a deal killer, as we have apple tv, so I can stream something to my mac air, and use airplay to put it on the TV, but a little annoying.

So far, we have definitely used netflix more - but most of the current shows are on hiatus until January, so we may use hulu more then.
Hard to believe its been 18 months without cable/directv. I can't think of a single moment where we looked back and wished we had cable. And we don't have nearly the set up that a lot of you have - just netflix/hulu and that has been enough for us and two kids.
Funny the wife and I were saying the same thing... neither of us have missed a thing since we switched. We do cheat a bit because I use the in law's password for the watch ESPN app but otherwise things really haven't been that different.

Wish I realized this 2 years ago... wouldn't mind having the $1400+ we spent on DirecTV back.

I'm in to year 4, and I don't miss cable/satellite. Watched a lot of ESPN when I signed up for Sling TV in April... but now the excitement of getting it back has worn off and I have watched very little of it recently. I'm sure that will change during football season though.

Watching shows at a specific time is becoming antiquated. Our grandchildren will laugh at us for having done that for so much of our lives.

Yea I just use the ESPN if there is a baseball game on (and football soon of course), otherwise I'm done with that network.
I read recently that they've lost over 3 million subscribers in the past year. Some of it's cord cutters, but most of it is cable customers downgrading to a basic cable package without ESPN.

Only a few months in but I m finding we have more options than cable or dish. There isn't anything to miss

I believe it. They've gone too far with the "entertainment" part of the network and it's become tired schtick. I used to be the guy who would watch the same sportscenter episode for 3 hours, now I can't stand any of it.

Thanks, tonydead. I managed to install Kodi using this guide:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AoQgNH5b8No

Now I'm following this guide to install channels (not really sure what that's going to mean until I'm finished with the setup):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=106E7skBih4

After I'm finished with that, I'll see what I can figure out with what I have, then come back with more detailed questions.
That second video is out of date a little bit. If you can add from zip addoninstaller it will be available under program apps and you can add others like shopping in an app store. Also that video says sportsdevil isn't available anymore and it is. However it's not in the "addoninstaller store" so you'll have to add it from zip too. Once you do it will be available under video apps.

Once you got that figured out Google how to add shortcuts to the home screen.

Someone recommended SportsAccess (pay streaming site/Kodi App) to me. Then I went to the guy running its Twitter feed and decided against it. What a (unt. If it aint broke (SportsDevil) why look elsewhere?

Just switched to Verizon for cell service this weekend. I never understood the nfl mobile app but it's free with verizon. So I can watch Thursday, Sunday night and Monday night on my phone. I also get regional Sunday games. And I can connect my phone to the tv. So that solves football.

The streams do break/get clogged due to the leagues shutting them down or users hammering the streams, just like they would on your PC/Mac as the app just scrapes the data for these feeds and plays it on your TV via whatever device you are using to run Kodi.

I'd be really interested in a pay service, as a cord cut has to provide me HD quality streams. The only ones I've seen seem to focus on UK sports, which is a miss for American pro sports I'd want to watch. If this guy covers them, I'd be in.

Just checked on Twitter, they shut down registrations as of 7/18. :kicksrock:

What's this SportsDevil thing now?
An app on Kodi that lets you stream sports events from around the world. That includes FirstRowSports streams without the ads/malware.

There may or may not be a stream of True Detective aerial flyovers there. PM Otis for details.

Okay, I found Sportsdevil and figured out how to get it to my stick (adb push command).

Tomorrow I'll work on icons. The quality of the streams isn't wonderful so far.

The shortcuts are simple, you just assign them under settings. I haven't found the live sports to be good quality either HD. But the movies and shows are fine.

Are you talking about shortcuts within Kodi? I did those. I thought you were talking about a shortcut to an individual Kodi channel from the main menu of the Fire Stick.

Yeah, no I haven't done that yet either. Post a link if you find a good one.

Has MyGica been mentioned at all in this thread? A friend just told me he bought one and I had no idea what it was until I looked it up. Kinda like a Roku on steroids, but maybe more of an extension to your phone? I only read a little into it but seemed like more work than I really care to get into. Can someone explain the differences of having one of these versus having a Roku or Chromecast?
I still don't really know what MyGica is. Is there a difference from having this or a Chromecast/Roku combination, other than it might have a faster processor & better WiFi connection? I'm not considering it yet, but that Android Lollipop set top box looks pretty beast. No complaints with my OTA/Roku/Chromecast set up so far. Just curious what the real benefits of a MyGica box are. Can anyone elaborate?

I'd love some advice from you guys. I live in an area where I can't do OTA and get my local channels due to geography. I'm trying to figure out how to watch football games at home. Right now I have a PS3 and Chromecast.

1. How can I get local channels that doesn't involve the cable company?

2. If I get Sling TV for ESPN, do I go Roku or Amazon Fire TV?
I just moved and now my OTA sucks. Antenna.com says I need a roof mounted antenna - a large one if I want NBC. I was perfectly happy with Amazon/Sling/Hulu/OTA but I don't know if I can completely forgo having the OTA channels.
Did you move further south? These sites all say NBC is a problem for south puget sound area...
Really? NBC works for me; CBS is my problem child. Works fine upstairs closest to the antenna on the roof, but, I rarely get it downstairs even with an amplifier. (Covington)
What antennas do you Seattle guys have?
I have the non amplified amazon knockoff of the leaf, and I get NBC very well about 5 miles east of drifter
Really? I'm still having trouble picking it up on one of my TVs with a full fledged antenna in the attic and a pre-amp.

Finally sideloaded and set up Kodi on my Fire TV. Have Genesis and 1Channel. Despite the hype, Phoenix seems to suck. What do I need for NFL?

You can go legit or free. You're paying for legit, but it's still skirting the rules.

Legit-ish : All instructions here for how to rig up Kodi for NFL Game Pass from an OUS location on your big screen. You're paying for it via this method, it's just that the NFL doesn't want you to do so as a US resident: http://www.reddit.com/r/cordcutters/comments/2cstpa/nfl_20142015_guide

Free: Sportsdevil will have streams, but they will go up and down as the league kills off random streams. Quality is completely variable depending on how many people are hitting the stream. Kind of like a free version of the old PS3 NFL Sunday Ticket app where DirecTv didn't build nearly enough bandwidth for the online part of the offering, and people who paid up couldn't watch entire games.

Not sure how to use a country spoofing service on the Fire TV. Easy enough on a PC but I don't see how to go about doing that on the device.

You can do it on your router by redirecting all DNS requests to whatever DNS you have set on your router. If your router doesn't provide that feature natively then it can get hairy involving adding some iptable lines of code or replacing the factory firmware to switch to an opensource firmware.

Newest version Kodi Isengard released last week. I've started to get update requests when I launch Kodi - looks awesome.

One interesting thing to note: Apple TV no longer supported. Apple updates to the IOs to kept trying to prevent 3rd party apps, typical, and limited memory. Good riddance, apple sux.

Sorry, but had to comment on this, as I recently switched to a Samsung Galaxy S6 Active from an iPhone. After spending hours on multiple sites (and remote killing my iMessage service) and 30 mins on the phone with Apple Care, I was informed that I may not receive text messages from iMessage users for up to the next 45 days, short of mass emailing anyone I know who texts me on an even semi-regular basis with iMessage to "...do these 2-3 steps to message me!"

There are APK files out there for VPN apps that you could theoretically side-load. OpenVPN for example. I have not tried this and have no idea if it works on the firestick or not. My VPN service has support for OpenVPN so I guess I could try it out for you if you are interested in or already have a VPN service.

ETA: I'm in the same dilemma for NFL so of course I'll eventually be trying it.

I have iMessage disabled. Half of my texts incoming and outgoing never make it through with that crap. I'm stuck with the iphone because the company I work for is dumb and that's the default device they pay for.

Basic rule of thumb on Kodi seems to be that if it's out on DVD, you can get a good, high quality stream. If it's not out, then you get garbage or you might get something decent that has Chinese subtitles or an annoying watermark (Avengers - hi).

Yep, pretty much like everywhere else. But it's better because it's easier to find and you don't have to download it.

My wife is going through a lot of the same thing. I don't want to turn this into a Google-fanboy vs. Apple-fanboy argument, things might change, but I would hate having to use iOS.

Here's a summary of my setup right now. It's evolved to this point and isn't ideal, but I'm still saving a lot and am happy.

Internet: Cable modem through Time Warner. Speedtest says it's at 57 MB download speed right now, but the kids are watching a streaming movie and I've got a lot of windows open - I don't know how much that affects it.

Antenna: I've given up. I installed a monster in the attic, but the reliability wasn't there for my location. I'm something like 50 miles from the antennas and it was more aggravating to have something cut out on me than to not have it at all. I'm not willing to put a huge antenna on the roof for various reasons.

Subscriptions: Netflix and Amazon Prime. Amazon isn't for the streaming, it's for the shipping.

TV setups:

1. Main TV with a Fire Stick, Xbox360, and Wii.

2. Smart TV in the basement, only connected to wifi. It streams Netflix and Amazon Prime and is in front of the treadmill.

On the main TV:

-Wii: We already had it for the games. It has been our primary Netflix streamer for the most part.

-Xbox 360: I bought it because at the time, it was the only way to get any form of ESPN. It was when the ESPN3 app was a little better than it is now - more was available. Recently, I've found the ESPN3 app pretty useless and have let my Live Gold membership lapse, so the 360 isn't getting used at all.

-Fire Stick: I bought this to try out the free streams. I installed Kodi on it and added some streams. The kids are watching Jurassic Park right now... pretty cool.

The biggest change has been that we pretty much stopped watching TV, which has been fine with everyone - we don't miss it. I miss the sports, nothing else. I'm hoping I can figure out a good way to get NFL games... I'd pay for Sunday Ticket over Fire Stick or something.

Which cell service do you have?

Verizon has the NFL Mobile App included with their data plans. It gives you TNf, SNF, MNF and select Sunday games. Get a cord to connect phone to the TV and bam, football is back.

Maybe its just me, but the video quality of amazon prime stinks when compared to netflix on my smarttv. I never have a problem with netflix video quality.

My primary obstacle at this point is getting the Big10 Network somewhere other than cable. Anyone know what services carry it? I see that I can get SEC network on Sling but I didn't see the Big10.

I'm probably asking the dumb question here but I'm not really all that amazed with Kodi...so I'm probably "doing it wrong". I installed the latest version on my FireTV and I kinda don't understand what to do from here. Someone got a quick pointer or two?
