We've cut the cable (3 Viewers)

I thought at least some of the cable companies were getting rid of the box and going the app route
Market's moving faster than they are, and they're losing ground taking their time competing against Vue and Hulu (soon). I'd love to see them try and compete on an out the door price with no contract vs. those two for same channels and features, never happen.

ETA: App only on a box you own, like a Roku or Fire Stick/TV.

Comcast tried to shove their "streaming box" down my throat when I called to try and get my internet reduced.  It's free for the first 12 months they said, you can just return it after that if you don't like it they said.  I told him I didn't want that crap in my house.

I just got a nVidia Shield TV and it's pretty awesome.  Super-fast (no lag/choppiness with the interface), great remote, and can play/stream games from a PC.  Runs Kodi and other Android apps.  Hardware is capable of decoding H.265 streams making it very future-friendly.  802.11ac wireless is nice as well.  Don't see ac in many streaming devices these days.

While not cheap, if you're looking for a full-featured Android device with a great CPU, give this one a thought.  I actually used it to replace one of my HTPCs and no regrets.
Some of the Kodi addon developers favor the Shield.  I don't see any difference between a HTPC built to spec, but, it is off the shelf.  Another choice is the new Kodi Box to simply plop a raspberry in.

Apologize in advance but I don't have the patience to read through 100+ pages. I am cutting in the next week or two, and just need a good recommendation for a good HD antenna and dvr setup so I can record and watch later. Any good, straightforward resources for information for non-tech guys would be appreciated.

tia
The thread recommended antennas are Winegard for outdoor and Mohu Leaf for indoors.  For straight forward DVRing most people seem to like Tivo.  There are several DVR programs available for HTPCs.  I personally use Windows Media Center on Windows 8, it works and has an accurate tv guide.

What other "streaming services" include locals?  I think the playstation one may, depending on where you live.  Any others that you can think of?

Also, do you know if any would work inside of kodi (titanium)?
Vue and Hulu depending on what market you are in.  I'm sure the others are working on it.  SFN TV Now has the Atlanta locals.  It's only a matter of time.

As for these integrating with Kodi, the only ones I've seen just launch the app when selected under Kodi Programs.  Not much different than if you had a hot button on your remote.  There used to be a Slingtv addon in the superepo, not sure if there is anymore.

Yep, no intro fee and price hike, negotiating, etc. Price is the price. You're really saving on equipment in a house with multiple boxes in this scenario, you can own a Fire Stick or Fire TV and break even in a few months vs. what, $15 or so/mo per box for HD-DVR? No brainer IMO. That's not even including RSN fees, franchise fees, local broadcast fees.
:goodposting:

Seems with all the add-on packages (HBO $14.99, RedZone $9.99 etc) that it will end up costing as much as cable when all is said and done.  Kind of defeats the purpose of cutting the cable, no?
I think most of us are (or at least were) willing to pay a fair price for tv.  It was all the other crap we had to put up with because they monopolized the industry.  With high speed internet available everywhere it's no longer a monopoly, in fact, there is absolutely no reason for satellite dishes at all.  I'm talking primarily Directv and Comcast. (All Comcast ever did was hook you up to their satellite with really long cables)

T

Wow, locals, ESPN/FOX Sports, MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL, and Comcast RSN channels and my only limitation is one box on at a time for $34.99? This is way better than PS Vue. I'm a subscriber as soon as this is available

Package seems perfect for us except missing out on MSG channel (Sabres hockey games.  Plus I'd add on Ticket etc and would be at $70)

The new 2 year price lock with AT&T (Direct TV) is $70.00 if you sign up with AT&T and cancel DTV.

How many kids?

How many streams at once?

Did you run a speed test to see if you were actually getting 25 before you upgraded?
2 boys (11 and 12).   So, they'd be on Netflix or games or whatever + my own laptop and work related items (which run off a separate network).

I was always getting 25+ on all my speed tests.  Usually in the low 30s down and about 6-8 up

Too bad Hulu is Hulu or might be tempted by their 1 stream for $35 with NBA/NFL Networks during seasons. Absolutely hate their ad system....and appears that it'll carry over to their TV service (can't FF thru commercials even with your recorded  ). Deal breaker for me. I'll just wait a couple hours for Exodus streams. I can only imagine watching Redzone and getting Hulu ads throughout it and missing 1/2 the touchdowns. :lmao:

Tinklepad a new addon to replace Exodus/Genesis?  It's in the fusion repo if you want to try it out.  I'll give it a go tonight probably.

hmm.  Has on option to download the movie or show.  Not sure how I feel about that.  Husham has a video on it.

it's in a zip file called jsergio inside of fusion if you just want and go get just the single addon.

That feature works great in exodus.  Very handy if you traveling.

Every time I see a new package like the Hulu one I do a little dance thinking "yes! that is exactly what I want", and then I read the fine print :(

3 deal breakers in the Hulu deal for me

* only 20 hours of DVR space

* not being able to fast forward through commercials

* only being able to watch from one device at a time*

=======================================================

* am I understanding this limitation correctly?  Say I have a Fire TV or Roku on two different TV's, and I purchase the 49.99 plan, can I still only use one tv at the same time?  The details say "Watch on one in-home device and one mobile device."

Has anyone had a Kodi build just disappear? I was using Morpheus and last night went to Kodi and it was stripped back to it's original state. Not a big deal as it isn't too hard to wipe and reinstall but I did have everything set up just how I like it.

Yea, I had Titanium do that to me about a week ago.  Like you said, wasnt a big deal to reinstall.  Havent had an issue since.

I think others were having issues with the Titanium/Morpheus builds back a few weeks ago, and perhaps this was part of that issue being corrected.

I have a Titanium Kodi build (on a raspberry pi 2 if that makes any difference).  Any way to have Netflix on it as well?  I know with a firestick you just exit the kodi subsystem, and you're back to the regular firestick interface - but I can't do that.  Any way to add Netflix (and amazon prime if possible) inside of a Kodi build?

The short answer is that I don't know how to utilize Netflix from within Kodi (sorry).

What's the reason that you need to do it that way? I ask because I have a pretty standard Kodi Android box (so not a Firestick). From the Google Play store I installed Netflix on the box and am able to utilize in that fashion (i.e. from outside Kodi). I would think your raspberry 2 setup would be similar to mine and you should be able to do it that way as well.

Found this on the web:

Really the only option for Netflix on the Raspberry Pi is to purchase a PlayOn license which requires another computer to transcode and stream to the Raspberry Pi.

I tried it and ended up taking advantage of their money back guarantee since I didn't like the interface/how it worked.

Found these videos also:

so maybe it is possible. just not that easy I suppose.

Because if I can't (or rather since I can't) access Netflix or Amazon Prime through the raspberry pi, I have to have another device (and thus another input on my TV) for that purpose.

Trying to make a "one device to rule them all" kinda thing, that's also wife friendly - for my full cord cutting this fall.  At this point, I think that would be a firestick with kodi - and a streaming service that work on the kodi which would give me my locals - but I don't currently own one.

Thanks.  Using a chromecast for netflix is easier than that, but like I said means I'll have a second device to switch back and forth between.

Just hoping/trying to only have one device (per TV) that allows for 1) locals - after all we still need to watch Jeopardy and Jude Judge in the afternoons/evenings 2) other individual channels like ESPN, AMC, HGTV, a la cart service 3) netflix streaming 4) amazon prime streaming 5) kodi (titanium) 6) streaming video files from my NAS

Now make it all wife friendly/approved.

I edited my previous reply with two different videos that are more uptodate.

SFN TV Now channel lineup.

ETA:  Sports plus all the Atlanta locals for $25 isn't bad for someone living out in rural Georgia.

I only see 4 packages available on their website and the $20 sports isn't one of them. I definitely would have considered switching from sling to add the Big Ten Network and Fox Sports to the ESPNs for the same cost. The only time it would be bad sports wise would be March Madness.

eta: Sports wise for me. I don't watch hockey or the NBA.

That requires an always on windows computer, and buying other software.  Which I can do, but was hoping to avoid.  Plus the entire thing I've never wife friendly should something go wrong and me not be around.
I'm likely not understanding your requirements so apologies for being obtuse.

Why do you need an always on computer? Can't you use something like this?

Kodi android box

This is what I use, it isn't always on and I can access Netflix on it from outside Kodi (Kodi is just one app that I can fire up from the box).

Does that have the android web browser app as well?  That looks really nice.

It does come with a standard android web browser but I downloaded and use Chrome. Basically anything you can download from the Google Play store and use on a phone or tablet you can use on this as well.

Yes, there are loads of those for sale on Amazon.  Good alternative.

The link you sent me above is one solution to have netflix inside of kodi on a raspberry pi (or other linux based computer).  The solution, though, requires a seperate windows based computer on your network that would actually be viewing the netflix stream, and then sending it to the raspberri pi/kodi box inside the local network with software called Playon, which I'd have to purchase.  I'm hoping to avoid both the purchase, and the always on machine.  Netflix, though, doesn't (yet) allow for streaming from a linux based computer as far as I know.

Just seeing if there was some trick I didn't know about.

No, that's not accurate. The device in the link I sent allows you to install and then watch Netflix from outside Kodi. The box is simply a small android computer with WiFi capabilities.

I believe this is accurate but this is an android based box from which you can use Netflix without the need for any other device or computer.

In defense of mattyl, I was confused myself with the link to playon as I too run kodi on a raspberrypi (its actually the os) but I stopped caring about netflix now that i see you can stream anything using exodus.

Right, and I don't own that box - nor do I want to buy another device.  I already have one Kodi device on our primary TV, I'd rather not purchase another (if I were to, though, I'd likely be the amazon firestick as I know it can do at least netflix, amazon prime, kodi, and a la cart offerings like sling and hulu.

Yeah, and that's a big part of it.  Having the actual netflix app as a backup, though, means not having to search for HD streams of stuff on exodus.  Having the actual app on something means it just works.

Ahhh, got it. Apologies as I thought you were looking for a one stop solution while looking at a blank canvas. I now realize you have some sunk cost and are looking for a way to maximize what you have without adding another device.

No problem.  Yes, I am trying to find that one stop solution (and hoping it was under $100 per tv).  I'm coming close with the raspberry pi 2, but also finding out it's limitations.

Get yourself a real debrid account for 4 bucks a month to be used within exodus.  Everything and I mean everything just works.  Gone are the days of searching for streams.

Tinklepad a new addon to replace Exodus/Genesis?  It's in the fusion repo if you want to try it out.  I'll give it a go tonight probably.
Husham jumping the gun a little bit on this one.  Only finds a couple of streams, every one I tried worked, but they weren't any better than Exodus.

He over exaggerates a lot of the time.  A lot of the stuff he's been dead on though.

Make sure you kill your version of Kodi and reload it.  Very important to start with a fresh load for Kodi...

then use this as a guide.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b7Qh-2fMCMM
I used this as a guide to reload kodi.  Installed fresh start addon to clear it to factory defaults.  Also tried deleteing the data and cache from the Firestick system menu, which appeared to set it to factory install as well..

** Trying to reply to your post was almost as difficult!  This new quote feature blows..

Looks like more changes coming for Sling. Just noticed BBC America, NBC Sports, and Bravo pop up in the last couple of days (after FXX and comedy central a couple weeks ago). It also looks like Comcast sports channels are coming soon too (which would be massive and I think provide nearly the rest of the regional sports channels).

It looks like they'll now have a Blue and an Orange package. Orange appears to be the original $20 package including ESPN and 25 channels.

Blue appears to be the Fox package (what was introduced as multi-stream beta a few months ago), and it's the one getting all these new channels (ESPN/Orange package does not). It's now $25. The Blue package should just be renamed "a truly amazing deal as long as you don't need ESPN".

You can also get both packages for $40/mo.

All this stuff seems to be changing pretty rapidly. I'd imagine Vue is probably still a little better deal for many, but I'm sticking with Sling until all this shakes out.

Plus, I really need to use the same account at two different addresses. Is it correct that Vue is tied to one address?

I'd have to look at it - but it seems bundling cable with internet gets you a better deal than $40 these days.

Yes I believe you'll get a message to contact Customer Service.

I had an issue using an account just going from wireless to hard wired at the same property. (I don't have any idea why I would) I didnt have any plans on using Vue beyond NBA playoffs but was a PITA to say the least.

-------------------------------------

I know Sling had "DVR capability" with some channels......but IMO that's the one thing it really lacks in attempting to compete with Vue/etc...Outside sports, I rarely watch anything live. And the more popular shows are available on Genesis/etc.. an hour may two after original airing anyway.

---------------

For ####s and giggles I just went to DTV website to look at starting as a 'new customer'. The regular price of their CHEAPEST package in my area (SELECT package) is $105/mo after taxes/fees.........doesnt have ESPNs,Fox Sports, NBA TV, NFLN. I double checked just to see if this was serious and it is. :lmao: I haven't had DTV in probably 5+ years and quit after paying $90/mo (which included the above sports channels). Just ridiculous.

Select is an awful package.  But how did you get to $105 a month when Select is $50 a month?  Taxes and fees are never that much.

I pay $71 a month(fees and taxes included) for the Xtra package and I get Sunday Ticket free.  This is the typical deal most get from DTV the past couple of years.

Xtra has a nice balance of channels if you want to look

http://www.directv.com/DTVAPP/content/packages/overview

  • $50
  • 00 /mo
Plus taxes. For 12 months. Req’s 24-mo. TV agmt. Reg. Price $88.00/mo.

Above is what I get when I input my zip code and result of SELECT package. I'm not sure if this ALSO include Live streaming any device. The XTRA package comes out to $118.00/mo (plus taxes fees etc..). When I had DTV several years ago, taxes/fees came out to $12-15.
I just did for ####s and giggles. Kodi already gives me everything I want (outside basketball and UFC I watch nothing live) but I'll still try new products/services out a month here and there.
