What are the top 3 issues that you care about? (1 Viewer)

Tim made a post about immigration not being a top-3 issue that Americans care about.  No clue if that’s true but got me thinking that maybe that would make for a decent thread topic.  So, what 3 issues do YOU care about?

I think my list would be:

- Wealth Inequality

- Climate

- Healthcare for all

I agree with Tim re: immigration, and your top 3 issues. But I would reframe #3 on your list to healthcare reform.

-National debt ( from government waste, and billionaires refusal to pay their fair share)

-Attack on our Democracy ( from Republicans  changing election rules where they can send alternate electoral votes, the placing of Trump sycophants in  as election judges and Secretary's of State, the possibility Trump could become President again)

-Climate change

Wealth inequality, including unequal treatment of financial crimes

Climate / environment

Attack on democracy

1. Rolling back COVID restrictions / return to normalcy

2. Breaking the concentration of wealth and its hold on our political system

3. Not sure any of the rest of it matters until we address the first two.

1. Citizens pursuing the truth rather than what they want to believe to be the truth.

2. Citizens making informed decisions based on that instead of what is politically convenient.

3. Citizens holding their representatives accountable when they veer from those 2 building blocks.

Only then will actual policy changes matter. Before then any talk is just filler.

1. Christmas trees being stupid expensive (along with everything else outpacing wage increases).

2. Covid running rampant and killing more and more people.

3. Tie between liquor store shelves being empty and health insurance at a $20k yearly burn between out of pockets and premiums for those who need it and housing being unaffordable.  Forced to pick, I'd go with our healthcare system being broken.

1. Reestablishing democracy / democratic norms.

2. Covid.

I don't think I have a #3.  Those two are a lot more important to than anything else on my list.

1) Economy/Jobs/Inflation

2) Crime

3) National Security. I include the risk of cyber attacks as well as counties creating and releasing viruses and their impact.

I think immigration could definitely be top 3 for someone who lives in a border state or has had more direct impact than me.  But I don't, so outside of wanting them to fix things I don't think about it at all except when reading FBGs.  On healthcare - I would agree that would be a better name but I was struggling.  Almost just put "Healthcare" as a generic topic but seemed too broad.

1. A return to some semblance of normalcy in government.  The emergence of Trump has caused the extremists on both sides to have too much influence in their respective parties.

2. Getting COVID under control.

3. Elimination of federal income tax and move to consumption tax

1. Out of control government spending leading to inflation and destruction of the economy.

2. Out of control government overreach (mandates, presidential edicts instead of legislation)

3. Political corruption and the further deepening of the connection between corporations and the government.

Good stuff so far.  I may let this run for a couple weeks and see if we can get a solid 8-10 that we can then put a pole up.  A Festivus pole.

I'm just a tad surprised you have Covid on your list - you and I have talked about how in our areas and in our familiar things are relatively back to normal.  Is your concern around just the sheer number of people still getting sick and dying or are you genuinely concerned for yourself/family or are you worried about a new variant that takes a higher number of people out or Covid economic impacts or all of the above?

taxes

border security(your kidding yourselves if you don't think we have let in a bunch of terrorists)

would put term limits here as would fix a BUNCH of things but as the politicians would have to do this & they won't,  this is a pointless endeavor.

3: economy

Covid isn't really affecting my life personally and hasn't for a while, but it's obviously still a problem for society at large.  It's still disrupting schools and supply lines, for example, and of course it's still killing a bunch of people.  It's the sort of thing that I'd like to see the government address.

Really I have a very comfortable life.  Hardly any of the stuff I argue about here or vote on actually has any affect on me personally.  In theory I could completely check out of politics and the material reality of my life wouldn't change at all.  My guess is that's probably the case for a large majority of people in this forum whether we care to admit it or not.

1. Economy

2. Cost of health care

3. Cost of education

I'd love for 2 and 3 to get fixed some way. A healthy and intelligent society is great for all.

We may be on  the same side. Are you For or Against these things?

Lol - I think we need to address Wealth Inequality, especially as I believe it will get worse with job automation over time.

Climate - big fan of it.  :)    All the stuff tied in to the typical Climate Change issues but I'm in favor of reasonable and measured responses, especially through incentives.

not in order

  • Border Control (we don't have a country without it)
  • Pollution (we are polluting this planet)
  • Human Life (stopping abortion)

1-Political Correctness-as I said in another thread, I believe it infects every single aspect of our lives right now and it leads to bad decision-making

2-Economy

3-Safety/crime...if we don't have this, I don't care what you think is important, it won't matter

There are a bunch of other issues that I care a lot about but IMO those 3 pretty much effect everything else in some way, shape or form.

1.  Democracy....new to the list.  Wasn't a problem until recently.  Without it the rest simply doesn't matter.
2.  Healthcare complex....this shouldn't be a "for profit" industry IMO.
3.  COVID.....this is the core problem we have with most things financial.  Fix this and those other things go away.

Not concerned with economy all that much outside of us being a consumer driven economy.....in normal times, I'd likely have economy on the list instead of democracy for this reason, but functioning democracy trumps that for now.

1. The safety of our Children in schools - Mass shootings are out of control. We have a serious mental health problem in the country and unfortunately also a serious parenting problem that raises the monsters who do these school shootings. I don’t even know where to begin....but it leads me to my next concern..

2. Social Media needs heavy regulation - It's out of control. It is changing our social fabric and something has to be done to reel in whats going on socially in our country. Too many kids feel inadequate, are being programmed to what is acceptable socially, bullied.....all on social media. Kids attention spans have deteriorated dramatically. My 16 year old son told me he tries hanging out with friends.....but all that ends up happening in todays world is 3-4 guys sitting around on the couch on their phones. Its crazy. This is not healthy. He plays baseball and plays the drums so he has a lot keeping him busy.....but socially our country is going down the drain.

3. The attack on democracy and preventing fascism as well as extreme progressive/socialism. It is really incredible what has taken hold here the last 4-5 years. It needs to be stomped out.....unfortunately we have a government that is now not functioning properly with compromise and being moderate....which I believe in my heart most of the country is (Moderate). But I don’t feel the majority of this country is being represented anymore and it is being held hostage by the extreme right and left.

And one more thing......Cancel Culture needs to stop......please. It is ridiculous. Just plain insanity. Good or bad I am proud of this country’s heritage and our ability to overcome our shortcomings. It does not need to be cancelled.....it needs to always be studied and spoken about. And people need to freaking lighten up for the love of God and all that is holy.

Good point with #1.

1. Subversion of Democracy. If you lose an election, concede and transfer power peacefully. The core tenet of Democracy. This idea of throwing out the votes or sending a different slate of electors or figuring out "other ways to win the election" needs to stop. Now.

2. Teams and sides. I'm an American. I have different views of different topics. I don't do sides, or even worse, teams. Stop vilifying other people. Frankly this forum is polluted by it and I'm afraid it's even worse elsewhere.

3. Regulation of media/social media. Some are worse than others, but people are literally brainwashed by this stuff. It's so dumb.

For the rest, I go issue by issue. But these need to be solved or we'll be living in Mussolini's Italy.

1. Removing or reducing corporate influence / lobbying / special interests in our government (a lot of things under this umbrella - overturn Citizens United, ending corporate subsidies in profitable / necessary industries)

2. Affordable Healthcare

3. Establishing democratic norms - as others have said.

Way too many to mention only 3.

1. Democratic party being taken over by progressives.   Let progressives start their own party and stop dividing.

2.  Crime rate rising. Last 12 months spike in murders, violent crimes and robberies should be very concerning to all.

3. Health care costs/ drug costs.      Totally out of control.

Having lived in a border state havving a secure border should be a given but it is not but that is a different topic.

1. Reestablishing democracy/ democratic norms.  Finding a way to stop gerrymandering and term limits would be helpful.

2. Climate / Environment

3. Healthcare and education tied here

1. Citizens pursuing the truth rather than what they want to believe to be the truth.

2. Citizens making informed decisions based on that instead of what is politically convenient.

3. Citizens holding their representatives accountable when they veer from those 2 building blocks.

I was going to go with 3 policy items then read your list and you nailed how I feel from a macro perspective.  So this.

This administration so far...

  • failed to raise the min wage
  • refused to discuss M4A
  • haven't raised taxes on the rich
  • continue to subsidize the fossil fuel industry
  • expanded oil drilling
  • ended the eviction moratorium
  • now reinstating student loan debt
how is the party being taken over by progressives exactly?  Any thing besides media sound bytes?

It is strange, other than political people I have never heard one person talk about climate change at work, at parties or at family gatherings.
Sure...its not a fun issue to discuss because it gets very political.  Similar to say...infrastructure doesn't get discussed a lot outside of political people.
