What does this driving gesture mean? (1 Viewer)

So I've noticed sometimes you'll have someone camped out in the left lane of the highway not passing anyone. If you pass them in the middle lane (assuming a 3 lane road) every once in a while they'll do some weird thing where they put up their pointer finger and twirl it around. What does that mean? I've only seen it in that situation. I've seen people do this when a big line of cars pass them in the middle lane, not just one outlier.

Sirens? Cops?

All I can think of is that it's supposed to mimic a flashing light on a police car, as if to say that you're breaking the law by passing on the right. If that's the case, the only reasonable response is to ram the guy in the left lane and drive him into a telephone pole or off a cliff or something.

That's all I can think of too. Though since the left lane is technically a passing lane we're both breaking the law. :) But I've seen it more than once same gesture and never in any other situation.

It might also be a warning that there is a cop nearby.

Do you wear a beanie with a propeller on it by any chance?

I've never seen that, but from the description, it sounds like it's a siren -- as in "careful, my radar detector thingy is going off right now."

I've seen that once before, and they guy was in the 2nd lane from the left when I passed him doing about 80. He gave me that signal (through his open sunroof) in an area where there are signs that say "Speed limit enforced by aircraft" or something like that, and I took his signal to mean that a plane was checking speeds from above and I should probably slow down or I'd be getting a ticket. So I slowed down. Never saw a police car though.

Sounds reasonable, but I kinda doubt it. I get the feeling from the other threads that people get pissed when they're passed in the right lane. They'd probably enjoy nothing more than to see you get pulled over.

PS - a few months back, I saw someone get pulled over for flashing their lights to warn of a speed trap ahead.

That's the motion I use when the driver behind me has his high beams on. I figure if he can see it, it might dawn on him that he needs to dim his lights, so the specific motion probably doesn't matter. I think it worked once.

you should turn and face him, holds your hands up to about chest level and then open and close both hands twice.

Maybe that's why they're sitting in the lane to help people? Seems odd to me though. Personally if I thought there was a cop I'd be sitting further right since as far as I know the left lane is for passing only and you could get pulled sitting there.

This was my thought. All of it.

I'd agree if he weren't just sitting in the left hand lane. Personally, if I know a cop is ahead, I always be sure to get over to the right if possible.

I think it is meant to signify the swirling waters in a toilet, meaning he knows he's a piece of #### for driving slow in the left lane.

There's no chance the gesture was to help or warn you in any way.

Mostly likely it was a sarcastic "hooray for you"
