What is the best mattress? (1 Viewer)

Been calling Casper this morning and all I get is this super creepy voice message that they are in some sort of team meeting.  You gotta be kidding me.  They are so cheap that not one person could man the phone for an hour?  Monday morning.

It must be the ghost then.

Read through this thread and mattressunderground site and finally decided on the 5" Tuft and Needle. Got it in yesterday and slept on it last night. I wasn't blown away, but it wasn't terrible. I'm waiting to really pass judgment until at least a week (the recommended air-out and settling time) has gone by.

And FYI, for those considering Tuft and Needle, their customer service is top notch and if you join the mattressunderground forum and make one post there (like "Hi, I'm new here"), you qualify for a small discount from Tuft, and it extends your money-back trial period from 30 to 60 days
A couple years later and I am pleased with the Tuft and Needle.  The only issue I had at first was that it did sleep a little hot for me. So I went and got an el cheapo gel mattress topper from Walmart (like 1/2 inch thick) just to create a separation layer and it worked perfectly. No more issues.

Call them and tell me what you think.
If you hadn't canceled your order, you'd probably have a bed tomorrow.

Are you sleeping on glass until then or something?

You're right but It will be here Wednesday.  Casper couldn't get onehere until Thursday or Friday, so I called Amazon one more time and the girl I got was great.  She looked up all the trouble I went through and she was like, oh wow, we seriously screwed this up and whatnot.  She tried to find a way to get it here tomorrow but just wasn't possible.  Anyway, free shipping and $100 credit to my account.  Like a lot of places, it depends who you get on the horn.

Does it sleep hot if you are hugging someone while you sleep?

How is this pillow holding up?  Buddy of mine hyped the bedgear pillow and I'm intrigued.
The pillow is holding up well.  I have not noticed any difference in it since I bought it.  It doesn't cave in or anything.  It holds it's shape.

My wife still absolutely loves hers.  Hers is really thin for stomach sleepers but she said it was her favorite item in our whole bedding purchase.

I recently stayed at a hotel and used 2 pillows under my head to prop my head up higher and woke with a really sore neck.  I think my bedgear pillow is just about the right height for me.

One day I tried using a thicker mypillow at home to get a little more pillow height, and I put my bedgear pillow on the floor.  When I woke up the next day and picked the bedgear off the floor it actually felt cold.  It does a really good job of keeping cool.  I like that I can slide my arm underneath the bedgear when I sleep on my side and it doesn't effect my head position much.  The only thing I would consider changing at this point is getting the exact same pillow but slightly thicker.

I just looked on a recent Consumer Report mattress rating list and the highest ranked mattress in the 'foam' category is:

Sleep On Latex - Pure Green Firm

They grouped all of the foam type mattresses together; as in memory foam and latex and mixes are all together in the 'foam' category.  They ranked Casper 2nd and named the Casper 'Best Buy'.  The Sleep on Latex is pure latex and is showing to be $1200.  It's only 9" thick and looks very simple.  Not all of the online mattresses were included.  Here are the top 20:

Sleep On Latex - Pure Green Firm

Casper

Novaform - 14" Serafina Pearl Gel (Costco)

Serta - Luxury 12" Gel Mem Foam

Lull - The Lull

Purple - The Purple Bed

Ashley Sleep - The Perfect 10

Tuft & Needle - The T&N Mattress

Serta - iComfort Savant Everfeel

Spring Air - Back Supporter Natalie (Costco)

Bear - 10" Queen

Ikea - Morgongava

Novosbed - Memory foam

Luxi - The Luxi Soft

Yogabed - Luxury Foam Y10

Novaform - Altabella (Costco)

Sleep Innovations - Taylor 12" Gel Swirl

Novaform - Comfort Grande (Costco)

Wright - 1.27 Luxury Mem Foam

Leesa - Leesa Medium Firm

Brooklyn Bedding Queen Medium Firm ranked 24th.  I am surprised about that.  The Mattress Underground really liked Brooklyn.  I do not recognize most of the other mattresses.  I found it really interesting that the top 'foam' mattress was pure latex.  That is a good price for a latex mattress too.  I think if I were looking to try a relatively inexpensive, foam type, online ordering mattress I would probably give those top 2 a shot.  I would also still consider the zenhaven, but that wasn't in the study.

The Sleep Number i8 bed ranked the highest overall and shows to be 3 racks.  The Sleep Number c2 bed was ranked just as high as the 'Sleep on Latex' bed and only shows to be $800.  I don't know much about that one though.  None of the Innersprings ranked very well.  I do remember liking the Serta iComfort when I was considering memory foam.

Really want to replace our BiaB mattress and was leaning toward Saatva but maybe I should go Casper. So many choices, so little time.

Is that the same one as this?

If so, the ratings were very clumped - price seemed to be a better distinguisher between the top 15 or so ranked mattresses since their scores were so similar.

It looks like it is a little different.  I am looking online.  My dad has a subscription.  The Casper has the same rating you show of 79.  The Tuft & Needle has the same rating you show of 74.  The Sleep Innovations has the same rating you show of 68.  The Sleep On Latex has a rating of 81 to take tops in the 'foam' category.

My guess is they probably took the results you have in the magazine, reviewed a few more mattresses, and added them to the mix.  And maybe took some out.  The reason I think they may have taken some out is that the only Tempur-Pedic mattresses they show are the Hybrid Tempur-Pedics.  They are called Tempur-Flex.  The Prima Firm got a 71 rating and the Flex Supreme got a 66 rating.  They do not have ANY other Tempur-Pedics in the ratings.

I also think it is updated because I believe I checked CR online previously and I don't think they had any pure latex mattresses in the list.  The Sleep On Latex is the first pure latex I recall seeing on CR.  Also, I am pretty sure when I previously checked CR online, I remember seeing the same thing you did.  The Tempur-Pedics having terrible ratings.  And it wasn't just their Tempur-Flex mattresses on the list.

I looked all over online to see if they have a date that shows when the study was conducted and I can't find a date anywhere.  That's also another reason I think the rating dates may be mixed.

Buying a sleep number C4...sounds like people are pretty happy with it reading thru thread.  Any other comments/concerns from owners?

More details on the foam category from CR:

Sleep on Latex Pure Green Firm - 81 rating - $1200

Casper the Casper - 79 rating - $950 (Best Buy)

Novaform 14" Searafina Pearl Gel (Costco) - 78 rating - $800 (Best Buy)

Serta Luxury 12" Gel Memory Foam - 78 rating - $500 (Best Buy)

Lull the Lull - 78 rating - $800 (Best Buy)

Purple the Purple Bed - 76 rating - $1000

Ashley Sleep the Perfect 10 - 74 rating - $700

Tuft & Needle T&N Mattress - 74 rating - $600 (Best Buy)

Serta iComfort Savant Everfeel - 74 rating - $1575

These were all of the 'foam' mattresses that were recommended by CR, and weather it was designated 'Best Buy'.  There really are a lot of good options and like the Tick said, the ratings are not that far off.  I am actually surprised the Serta at the bottom of this list was recommended given how high the price is.

Interesting that the best value on your list, Serta Luxury 12" Gel Memory Foam, is available at Sam's Club and has only a 3.6 customer review rating there. Sam's has the Night Therapy models rated at 4.5-4.6. I know that reviews can be trumped up but what gives since these have hundreds? Initially good rating when you first buy and then it deteriorates?

You know... ratings really are somewhat of a crap shoot.  I have no idea why the ratings would come out like that.  the only thing I can think of is... maybe the Sam's night therapy model wasn't tested.  Another thing... you just never know who is reviewing on the Sam's web page.  Some Consumer Reports reviews definitely cause me to scratch my head sometimes... but unfortunately you never know.  I know a lot of people, understandably so, question weather Consumer Reports truly is unbiased.

I found that particular mattress interesting on the list too.  It is a major brand mattress, but it is really inexpensive.  That usually results in bad reviews... but there it is rated well on the list.  One thing I do know is that Consumer reports has a video where they show how they do some of there testing.  They have this giant 6' long, about 4' diameter giant wooden roller that roll over beds with a machine.  It is supposed to simulate 8 years of wear on a mattress.  Maybe that is part of the equation that the online reviewers don't know about yet.

I live in Phoenix and I cannot believe how many Mattress Firm stores there are here.  I just counted 4 all located within a 1/2 mile radius.  It is insane.  Do they really sell that many mattresses?

So has anyone bought a purple mattress or a sleep number bed.  Looking for some reviews.
So I've had this close to a month and all I can say so far it is great.  I've had severe back pain due to spinal stenosis.  I've never been able to sleep on my back ever til I got this mattress.  Hopefully this mattress holds up.

Which one do you have?

I will have had my Casper for two years in September. Loved it for a while. But what I was worried about with these foam mattresses before I bought one is a legit concern now, basically how well they hold up over time and how with a relatively new product like this, we just didn't have enough to go on. I'm about 190 lbs and primarily sleep on my side, and my side has lost a lot of its firmness. Too soft for me and is killing my hip/lower back on the side I usually sleep on. Tried rotating the bed around to now sleep on my wife's side (125 lbs, plus was pregnant for 9 of those months), it's firmer but by about 4-5am I wake up with the same pain.

Warranty is pretty useless, as it needs to have a visible sag of at least one inch to be covered. Not even close.

This is my concern too. Has anyone had one for 5+ years and it feels the same as new?

I got my Sleep Innovations memory foam mattress in 2012, and still love it.  I'd say it's the same as new.  We're 130 and 175 pounds.

When I bought it, I figured that at that price, even if I had to replace it after 5 years, it would be worth it compared to the old Beautyrest-type mattresses.

The latter. I spent a little bit of time on the mattress underground. Reading their reports and recommendations. This was mentioned as a recommendation. Also, the price IMO made it worth the risk. King mattresses are just expensive anyways and to get in for $800 seemed worth it.
@Bucky86 or other Ultimate Dreams Supreme Gel or Ultimate Dreams EuroTop Latex owners,

How is your mattress holding up? Still like it?

Do you still like the Purple mattress after a few months?  Would you recommend it?

I went through the discount link on mattress underground and just ordered what I believe is the best fit for us, the Ultimate Dreams Supreme 12" Gel Memory Foam. You get $50 off plus two free shredded memory foam pillows and a free set of sheets.

I am tempted by Ultimate dreams.  I have a $75 coooopin from my wife’s best friend and Amex has $100 off on Casper right now so I may go Casper.  So many choices.

Sorry if already addressed in here but I am to lazy to read everything. Memory foam mattress purchase going on a platform bed, box spring or no box spring?

Typically that would be no box spring. i have a Ghost Bed and it's on a platform frame with no box spring. If you order their box spring, it's just a box spring shaped wood box that acts as a platform.

We ended up getting a different bed frame than what we had anticipated so we got a box spring.

Most definitely, was going to chiropractor 1-2/week.  Two weeks after I got it I stopped going and haven't been to him yet.  So it practically paid for itself.

I pulled the trigger on a memory foam (medium firmness) primarily we have 120 days to trade it in or get our money back. The store asked us to be committed to at least 30 days as it takes some getting used to and the bed needs to break in. How long to really break in? It is definitely firmer than the one we tried in the store and I am not really caring for it at the beginning but am definitely committed to seeing this through.

Sounds expensive. Can I ask why you didn't buy online?
I didn't do a bunch of research. We went to several stores and made our best choice for the  purchase. Didn't feel comfortable making a purchase of something without testing it out first.

Box Spring and mattress for just under 1200. Did I get raked over the coals?

Never had to haul a mattress away before. Gonna take it to a recycler on a trailer Monday. Sucks.
