What kind of beer is everyone drinking tonight? (1 Viewer)

I'll show my good beer n00bness with a stupid question for the beer guys - Over the last few months (since I found a place I can buy micros and imports) I've tried about 60 different beers. A couple of things I've noticed is that I pretty much like all the wheats. One reason is that they don't seem to have the bitter aftertaste. A friend of mine told me that the bitter aftertaste is the taste of the hops. Is this correct?

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Yeah, most of the time, bitterness can be associated with hops.

They are not necessarily my favorites, but based on what I think you are looking for, I bolded some suggestions for you. Just remember that IPA = India Pale Ale = hoppy = bitter.

These are my recommendations:

DOGFISH HEAD:

60 Min. IPA - Nicely hopped IPA with a great floral aroma.

NORTH COAST BREWING CO.:

Old Rasputin - Strong great tasting stout

STONE BREW:

Arrogant ******* - A strong tasting beer that is perfectly balanced between the biscuity malt and the in your face hops

Ruination IPA - Hops that slap in in the face

Russian Imperial Stout - I haven't had this but I have heard that it is a wonderful beer. Once again, this is a real strong stout

UNIBROUE: (The belgians are not very bitter, as they use low amounts of hops)

Maudite - Belgian strong dark ale, malty with belgian spiciness

Trois Pistoles - Another strong dark ale, fruity with lots of alcohol

La Fin Du Monde - Nice Belgain strong pale ale, has hints of coriander,

Duvel - Another great Belgian strong pale ale, effervescent

Sierra Nevada Big Foot - Malty sweet and super hopped. Not for the faint of heart.

Ayinger Celebrator - Dark and sweet with lovely tastes of roasted malt, a world class beer

You're absolutely right. I tried to provide descriptions so he can choose some that might fall more into his personal taste. The Duvel, La Fin de Monde, and Pranqster should all be up his alley. He should experiment with some different hefe weizens and dunkel weizens. Belgian Wit beers would also be good.

Bolded are my picks.Duvel is a must try. Pretty much sets the standard for the Belgian Strong Pale Ale. Insanely drinkable at 8.5%

Ayinger Celebrator is the best dopplebock on the planet. A wonderful brew.

And, for variety, I'm suggesting the DFH 60 minute, though I've never had it. :bag: GDB the beer distribution down in SE Louisiana. Anyhow, folks rave about DFH, and this will provide variety in your three beers: one Belgian, one Doppelbock, and an IPA. All distinct, wonderful styles.

thanks guys. This helps alot. I have liked every hefe, dunkel, and witbier I've tried so far. I guess that makes me a more malt, less hop beer type of guy.

Good point. Here you go, Fuller.Bud

Bud Light

Bud Select

Bud Ice

Bud in a bottle

Bud in a can

Bud in a mug

Bud in a party cup

Bud that's been open for a few hours

Bud that was just cracked

Bud that is warm

Bud that is cold

Bud that is opened with a screw top

Bud that is opened with your enormous jaw

Bud that was cooled in a cooler

Bud that was cooled in a stream

Bud that tastes like piss

Bud that tastes like lighter piss

Hope that helps, GB

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
what? no Busch?!??! :lmao: just noticed the jaw comment.

Nice to see a fellow malthead on board. Personally, I prefer Belgians, doppels, hefes, porters, and stouts. I do love a good IPA, but I'm not really big on hop bombs. Just a bit overwhelming for me. Oh, and go find St. Bernardus somewhere. If you can't, I'll send you some.

I have the feeling the Fuller is going to get sticker shock if he ever finds a good Belgian.

Anyone from Atlanta know if Dogfish Head is available here? I haven't seen it anywhere.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
They want to be in Georgia, but I have heard they are waiting to increase production. Should be there in about a year or so. They do have it up here in North Carolina, and also in Tennessee and Florida I believe.

most I ever paid for a single bottle was $15 (750ml DFH 120)

Oh wait, I paid over $50 for a jeroboam of Ommegang Hennepin

balked at paying $13 for a bottle of Fantome de Noel. mostly cause i didn't have the money in my pocket to get that AND everything else i wanted.. went quantity over quality that time.

I had to google jeroboam. Its what, the equivalent of 4 750 ml bottles? I hope you had friends to share that with. The most I have ever paid for a beer was $20 for a 750 of Allagash Interlude, a saison aged in wine barrels.

I'm kicking myself because I can't remember the name of it right now, but the local Bevmo stock a Beligian that is about $30 for a 750ml bottle. I can see the bottle in my head, but can't remember what it is. Trout probably knows.

One of these days I should just break down and buy it.

Not at your every day grocery store.  But a high end liquor store should have both.

And always drink them out of the proper glass at about 55 degrees.  In both these cases, a wide rimmed glass will work.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
?
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Maybe something like this.
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
It's like college here, just more fun, and for beer.
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
But one of THESE. Providing you dont' break it, you'll never need another glass.
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I've got four of those pups

I think we have the same beer here, but the name is escaping me. :wall: I haven't forked over the money either.

right now I'm drinking everything in a pint glass. Gonna get a weizen glass soon. What others do y'all find necessary? (I know none of them are absolutely necessary, but which do you feel are good to have?)

I have a pint glass, a weizen glass, and two belgain glasses. The Duvel glass pictured above will work for a lot of belgians. I also have a Chimay glass (which is kinda funny since I don't drink much Chimay).

I know a guy who paid $100 for two 7-oz "nip" bottles of Thomas Hardy's Ale - the 1968 vintage!. Of course he's also a beer junk (bottle/can/etc.) collector, so that was probably part of it.

That would do it. Might want to add a flute for the lambics and perhaps a snifter for the imperial stouts but not totally necessary.

Kilgore beat me to it. Yes, they should be here in 2007. Chattanooga is probably the best bet for now - you could get both DFH & Stone beers. Have you tried any of the Great Divide beers? They haven't been in GA too long, but they're quality.

I've seen the Great Divide on the shelf, but haven't tried one yet. I'll pick a couple up tonight when I stop to stock up on Hazelnut Brown and Chipotle Ale.

I have been stockpiling Three Floyds Drednaught Imperial IPA this spring. Every time I go to the brew store, I pick up 2 more 22 oz. bottles at $8.99 a pop.

I drink one a weekend. Friday night if I've had a bad week, Saturday if I'm chilling and grilling in the late afternoon, or Sunday if I haven't had one yet during the weekend.

I think it's the best beer I ever drank. Even though I've got 8 or 10 in my beer cellar, I'm already starting to freak out a little bit when I think what it's going to be like when they're gone and I have to wait another year to get them again.

Hi, my name is Kilgore. I want to be your friend.

I can't believe I've never visited this thread before. I'm about halfway through it and already have a list of a dozen beers I can't wait to try.

It's making me very thirsty.

Starting to think a mid-Atlantic cornhole at Dogfish (preferably in the off-season) could be a very good idea.

SERIOUSLYi jumped in to this thread a bit late as well, after joining the BOTM club, and it's propelled me to buying dozens of beers... and trading with a handful of FBGs.

it's addicting :help:

seriously? they're heavy like booze?haven't had any of mine yet.. am curious if i should be drinking it like bourbon on the rocks or something?

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
No, you want your imperial stouts warm(ish).A snifter provides maximum surface area with your palm so the body heat warms the beverage. The shape also allows for the aroma to be presented properly to your palate. Approximately 90 percent of taste is smell (hence using proper glassware is a good thing)

Yes, it is a 3-liter bottle... and it was shared with all who wanted any after my wedding... on the steps directly in front of the church.

Skylord, package arrived safe and sound

Awesome. They've got to be one of the most under rated breweries out there. Very much looking forward to trying the rest of their beers, especially this one.A rich brown ale inspired by the enigmatic monastic brews of Belgium, and the mysterious mist shrouded jungles of the tropics. Brewed with real cacao, and spiced with cinnamon and sweet orange peel for a sensual delight. A brew to be sipped, savored, and enjoyed!
