What kind of beer is everyone drinking tonight? (4 Viewers)

Started with a Duck Rabbit porter while cleaning out the beer cellar - nice, basic, oily porter, not overly roasty or heavy, just a basic good drinkable beer.

Beer cellar finds: More ten year old homebrew that needs to be dumped than I feel like dealing with at the moment, several bottles I didn't know I had, and a dusty, cobwebbed stash of a homebrewed lambic that used (in part) whatever my buddy and I could culture up from the bottom of a bottle of Cantillon. One bottle is currently chilling because, if I'm going to try this stuff, it's going to be late tonight so if gastric disturbances occur it'll be on the company's dime. Do I feel lucky? :ph3ar:
Keep us updated (more on the quality of homebrew and less on gastronomy).
:lmao: :goodposting:
Will do. I don't want an inadvertent follow up to the Colonblow Diaries. On an unrelated note, just read that Heavyweight Brewing is going to close this summer. Great brews - will be sad to see them go, but it sounds like Tom & Peggy aren't getting out of the beer scene for long.

New guy in town. :pickle: About 3 or 4 miles from my house.
 Nice, sounds like you'll have a new friend soon.
I've been trying to catch up with him, but no luck so far. I'm hoping to "volunteer for beer". I can sweep floors. Clean toilets. Whatever.
3C's - Hello Mr. Williamsburg, I've been doing research on-line and I found that the first 20gal of beer that comes out of these vats needs to be sampled because of the new lining.Mr. Williamsburg - Well, sounds like I need to pay someone to sample the beer.

3C's - :hey:

Seriously - give them a call and see if they need any help with kegging, cleanup, etc. Most breweries would love to have the help on occasion. Hell, a few brewers got their start that way. Takes the glamor out of the job and if you can put up with crawling into a vat to shovel out spent grains, you'll probably find out it's a lot of fun - a lot of work, but a lot of fun.

Top 50 places to have a beer in America.

http://beeradvocate.com/acbw/2006/places

#### & Bull Pub, which is about 50 miles from me, ranks #6  Im gonna have to make it a point to go there.

Skylord, the Stuffed Sandwich clocks in at #9.

Edit: From the latest BarFly review of #### & Bull on BA:

The beer selection and service is what sets this place apart from any place else. There are 200-300 beers available at any one time, 15-20 on draft. Beers vary depending on season and availability. The bartenders and owners; Howie, Dawn, and Travis are extremely helpful and knowledgable. They are always willing to suggest a selection no matter the time or how busy they are.

If you think you have the stamina you can join the Alchemist Club. You must drink 200 different beers in a years time to become a member. This club has many perks including; your own plaque on the wall, discounts, browse their back cooler to see their entire collection, and first dibs on very selective beers. I am currenty undertaking in said quest and I can say from experience it is well worth it. You definately define the beer style that suits you and those that do not. You also will make many friends in the process. Fellow "pledges" and members are always happy to suggest a worthwhile selection.

The Pickle Barrel in Fort Collins, Co. is the best place as far as I'm concerned (GREAT sandwiches too). Pretty sure there is a review in the Beer Advocate.Anyway, Naja's @ #22. Been there, it's not far. It's a dive, which can be nice. But it's surely on the list based on the sheer number of beers they offer.

EDIT: Yeah, the list is obviously very bias. Most lists like this are.

3 on the list are close enough for me to go to. Capital Ale House (#14, though they have another one which is #10) is about 10 minutes from work, and maybe about a mile from where I get most of my beer. Bier Garden (#42) is about 30 miles away. It's not so good for American craft, but excellent for imports. I actually like the bar close to my house more than Bier Garden, due to more micros being available.

can you more experienced guys recommend beers that have "citrus" hops as opposed to the "pine"?

this post made on the heels of another Bell's Two-Hearted

I've been to two of the top fifty. #7 Papago Brewing in Scottsdale, AZ and #15 Brick Store Pub in Decatur, GA (near Atlanta). Both were great establishments. Papago had about thirty beers on tap and a ton of bottles. The location is in a strip mall of all places, and the interior is just okay. But they more than made up for the location with an excellent beer selection and great service. I can see why it is rated well. I was there during Christmas, and they had several great Christmas beers on tap, a couple of Belgians, Stone Ruination and several others, including their own Wheatwine aged with borboun oak chips.

Meanwhile the Brick Store offered less on tap but they specialize in Belgians. I had Gulden Drak, Cantillon Gueze, and Saison Dupont on tap and have been known to have St Bernardus on tap as well. I can't wait for my next trip to Atlanta.

Just popped a freshly carbonated keg of homebrew. This one is a basic amber ale. Turned out well. This will make a good session beer and compliment the ESB on the other tap nicely.

Go here: Hop Union variety databookThen, when you go to a brewery's website to research before buying and see what hops they use, you can see what to look for flavor-wise.

SNPA is the classic citrus hop pale ale - just loaded with Cascades.

Most of the west coast IPA's are very citrusy. Cascade is usually the hop you are tasting here, but it could also be Centennial, Columbus, or possibly Amarillo or Warrior. Racer 5, Titan IPA, Stone IPA, and Dogfish 60 mintute IPA come to mind.

probably no coincidence that i've really liked both the Racer 5 and Dogfish 60 then, huh.

Well, I think there's a lot of BAs from MA. They're probably pushing the numbers a little higher. But the Publick House is pretty nice. Interesting though that Stuffed Sandwich and Capital Ale House (#9 and 10) have slightly higher review averages than Publick House which is #2. Maybe they used their fuzzy math like they do with their beers ratings.

Pretty much sums it up. That was one of the things I really liked about RB. The ratings were straight up, there was no weighting one way or another.

Cool! Check out the beer tour at the 12th ranked place on the list. 200 beers = case of your favorite. Helluva deal. Like Alchemist, it's like you're on a quest with likeminded people. I chose Aventinus for my case. Mmmmm... Scary that I'm now in four figures there. :bag: Also been to: #2 (Outstanding bar - can't argue with the rating), #24 (simply astounding brews and a very fun, cool brewpub run by a couple of great people - but I constantly gripe that they don't fill growlers), #38 (it's like Maine brew central - 50 taps of primarily local brew, including Allagash offerings aplenty), and #47 (Hop Devil straight from the source - great place, great brews, a beast to find if you're heading from the west).

I will be hitting #1 and #20 sometime this year, mark my words. I live too damned close to the Moan and Dove to NOT go.

I really have to make the trip to the Toranado one of these days. San Francisco is only 1.5 hours from Sacramento. Of course, I might get detoured to Russian River on the way and that isn't necessarily a bad thing.

OK, folks, it's time... cracking open the homebrewed lambic.

Open the bottle - heard a *ffft* so there is some carbonation. Gotta go get the lambic snifter...

Dark amber, very little carbonation. Sort of sits there in the glass like a fetid swamp.

Aroma of honey, horse blankets, burlap, and vinegar.

Taste? This is what happened when my wife tried it a second ago:

After trying a sip she made faces that looked liked they were edited out of the Exorcist. She says they were more like chiarascurro versions of Edvard Muench's "The Scream." (When she could talk again after 10 seconds or so) "I think my cheek muscles are permanently damaged. I think they're paralyzed. They're stuck. Did you see me foaming at the mouth and drooling? Oh... God. BLECCH!!"

Probably the tartest thing I've ever drank. Just fiercely sour - slightly bitter, but like chugging lemon juice without the lemon flavor. There is some underlying horse-blankety burlappy cardboard flavor, but any malt long ago ran screaming from the bottle.

Don't do this to yourself.

So, you going to finish it or what?BTW- Cracking open the Sierra Nevada IPA now.

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: Umm, no. I'm fairly familiar with lambics and know what one's supposed to taste like. This ain't it. The glass is still sitting there half full, but the rest of the bottle was a drain pour. I'll see what happens as it warms, but I'm worried that when it hits room temp it may become sentient.

The last of my Cottonwood Frostbite is now restoring my tastebuds' faith in mankind.

Going for a Tyranena Whos Your Daddy? Bourbon Barrel-Aged Imperial Porter. Sounds good!
This beer was REALLY GOOD.
I read earlier that you can now get Jolly Pumpkins?? When did that happen?!?!To stay on topic, Im gonna have an Expedition Stout right about......................

NOW

Wow, I'm just catching up. Looks like I missed a busy evening yesterday. The G/F was gone last night, so I decided to kick back and watch a movie. I had already had a couple of Lagunitas Censored Red Ales, and a couple of Sudwerk Pils at this point. Maybe something else too.

So I popped 'Walk the Line' in the DVD player, poured a Duvel 750ml and started watching. When that was done, I refilled with a Stone RIS. In hindsight, that probably wasn't the best idea. When that was done, I was pretty loaded. Or I should say, I must have been pretty loaded, because I fell asleep right there on the couch for three hours. The G/F woke me up when she got home and ushered me into bed. I woke up early for screaming piss that was dying to get out, and noticed that she wasn't in bed with me. I knew immediately what hapenned. She went to the spare bedroom because I was snoring like a chainsaw. This tends to happen when I plowed out of my mind. Whoops.

Fro - Verdict on Dreadnaught?
Have not had it yet. I have cracked the masala mama growler and finshed her off while walking the "Bay to Breakers". Crazy Day.

Masala Mama was very good. Had been sitting almost 2 weeks so it lost a little carbonation but it was tasty none the less. Nice hop character.

When you guys talk about "Stone" this or that, are you referring to Stone Brewing Co, as in Arrogant ******* Ale?

Or are you talking about Stone Gossard?

Much thanks.

Yeah, I know. That's a friend's (poster here) bro-in-law. What I'm wondering is when you guys bring up "Stone", is that the same brewery? I have no idea how big he is.
