What kind of beer is everyone drinking tonight? (3 Viewers)

A couple of Heavy Seas Marzens tonight, not bad. :banned:

Highly recommend the Michigan brewery Bell's. The Oberon Ale (Pale Wheat) in particular is exceptional.

6 pack of Butternuts Beer & Ale's Moo Thunder Stout and a 6'r of their Porkslap Pale Ale. Great packaging, mediocre brews. They aren't bad by any means, but I prefer more substantial examples of both styles. I like my stouts (especially my MILK stouts) to have alot of body depth and a heavier mouthfeel, this isn't like that it's more like guinness. The Porkslap ale has a little kick to it, but not enough hops to make a more pleasant malt-hop balance or some extra depth.

Tonight I will have to see what else I can get my hands on for Game of Thrones night.

Bell's is one of the biggest microbrewers in the country- lots of amazing beers coming out of there. If you are into supporting Michigan, there are quite a few top notch breweries: Founders, Shorts, Dark Horse, New Holland, Jolly Pumpkin, Arcadia, and Kuhnhenn all come to mind. If we are talking beer of any style, I'd put Michigan up against any state.

It's not even 9am and I shouldn't be drinking beer, but I am, and the Kern River Isabella Blonde surprised me. I didn't expect much, but I'm pretty sure I prefer this to Sierra Nev Pale. I got the sensation of fresh cut grass in a very good way. Oven fresh bread with a fruit creaminess, not too hoppy. Sessionable beer here. I can't drink all day, so I'll check back in when I open a Mojave Red around noon.

You have inspired me to open a beer. I am a bit spoiled for choice though, not sure what to open.

I had a Short's Sustenance last night (among too many other beers) and it was quite good. Do you have any of that? I wish more breweries put out schwarzbiers, really an underrated style.

I don't have any of that. That isn't my favorite style, but I will try it some time. I do have Short's Hangin Frank Strong Pale Ale. I'll start with that. Cool story behind the beer: it was originally brewed exclusively for this bar and grill in Petoskey- it is a somewhat famous spot that Hemingway used to frequent. The name is inspired by the former owner who hung himself in the basement and supposedly haunts the bar to this day.

Well, I have rarely inspired anyone so this is an honor. :banned: I think.

Just finished a Half Acre Brewery Tour.Daisy Cutter is Awesome. :banned:
Daisy Cutter and Flower Power are on my short list of IPAs that I need to get my hands on.
I finally got some Daisy Cutter just a few weeks ago. It was less than a week old...it's unbelievable. It's not quite an IPA though, not as hoppy. I think it's the ultimate hanging out and grilling summer beer.
Yeah, I just looked and it is listed as an American Pale Ale. I also need to get my hands on Green Flash West Coast IPA...that is other big IPA that I haven't gotten yet.

I passed on a Green Flash Barleywine planning on going back for it and it sold out with no plans to restock it. Ugh. What is your association with beerspot?
Anyone who hasn't made it over to The Beer Spot should definitely check it out. Great place.link

It was started by three FBGs. TipTop, Nucular George and Organized Chaos. Definitely worth checking out for beer info and furley

Also, tasker's link is the main one with easier acces to ratings and beer searching

growler of Long Trail Coffee Stout, followed by a couple of bombers of White Birch's Wrigian. I've never had either, but i'm definitely looking forward to them.

RR Consecrationfrom Sebowski awhile back...interesting
I think that thing is probably around 2 years old now. What did you think? I've been thinking of opening another one of those. Hope you split it with a few people. Pretty hard to take down a 750 of that guy.
It was good, not as sour as I was expecting. Mellower than it probably was earlier.I drank it alone. Took me awhile. I've been drunk since like 5:30 PM.
That is surprising. I haven't had one in a wile, but remember it being about as sour as they get. I'll crack one soon.

Finishing off a Starr Hill (Crozet, VA) sampler tonight. The Northern Lights IPA is fantastic. Lucy, The Love, and Jomo Lager are all a bit odd, but very refreshing summertime brews.

Left hand missed homerun by one letter. Can you figure it out? SLR = ALE

eta: homerun homerow what's the diff
Hahaha. Do we have a rule about the drunk posting in this thread? I mean, if there IS a thread where it's acceptable it's this one or the whiskey one. :banned:
I don't think I was drunk, maybe a little buzzed and very hurried. Company knows I have been seeking Barleywines and Scotch Ales. I just had a delivery of Belhaven Scottish Ale in the nitrocans. Nice and creamy, great creamy mouthfeel with rich malts and toasty bread and nuts with a pronounced anti-hops sweetness and the aftertaste of water. I could drink these all night.

I am a huge, huge fan of the LT Coffee Stout and consider it one of my favorite beers (of any style). I absolutely love it.

Ugh, we have similar tastes it seems. the Belhaven Scottish Ale sounds delicious. I hope I can scrounge for it up here to at least give it a try.

Raspberry Tart.

About to crack a Haandbakk that I bought a long time ago then saw the price tag and thought maybe I should save it for another, more soberer, time....

Had Deschutes for the first time last night. A cascadian (dark) IPA and Inversion IPA. So good, amazingly clean finish. The dark IPA is almost like a porter, but doesn't feel as heavy.

I stopped by Sprecher earlier today to refill my growlers and was pleased to see they still have the Russian Imperial Stout on tap. That will be good for my brewday on Friday when I am making a big black stout. Tonight I'm putting a dent in the Black IPA. Got their Summer Czech Pils in my third growler, which I've never had and am looking forward to this weekend.

Indian Wells Lobotomy Lager 10.5% black like coffee. I'd buy it again. Session beer.

I have a question. I found this Asian liquor store that has, I dunno, 100 or so micro beers and imports I never heard of and many of them are old bottles. Dated 08 09? What's the story on old beer like this. It has not been refrigerated.

Just picked up six packs from two local brewers.Kern River Brewing Isabella BlondeIndian Wells Valley Mojave RedAlso six packs from old stanbysStone Levitation AleSierra Nevada Pale AleI'll have 7 beer drinkers here tomorrow but one won't touch any of these. She drinks Bud Light on ice.
Are these the older bottles?I've never had the top two, although I know Kern River has a good reputation. I can't say I've ever even heard of Indian Wells, though. I'm guessing they're both California-only (or limited regional) distribution.Nothing wrong w/Stone Levitation or Sierra Nevada PA. I haven't had Levitation in ages, but Stone always makes good beer...I can't pick out a "bad" one I've had, although I hear the new Belgo Anise kinda sucks. I'm just fine if a bar has a bunch of crap beers but has bottles of Sierra Nevada PA...I can drink that all night if I have to.

New Glarus Unplugged IIPA was somewhat of a letdown, though I got it for free, so I'm not complaining.

Is it bad that according to my rating records, I've had more New Glarus (which is Wisconsin-only distribution) than any brewery other than Southern Tier and Ithaca (which are both local-ish)?

Depends on the beer and the temp variations in the store. IPAs don't age. Stouts and Barley Wines age best. If its always air conditioned I wouldn't worry about aging on the shelf. If it gets 85 degrees in there all summer, I wouldn't grab anything from their shelf. Which ones jumped out at you?

Oh, these older beers. Sebowski pretty much said it best. Sours can age pretty well too.

Thanks for thoughts on the older beers. There's plenty of English and Irish ales, some sours, but mostly just a wide variety of imports. It's three shelves about 20 feet long each. One to three beers form rows going into the shelves - usually just one. So that makes for a ton of different brews. I'll get out sometime today, buy a couple, and maybe jot down some of this inventory.

Question, what's the main differences in English, Irish and Scottish ales? I do love me some Scottish ales. One they have that I'll pick up today is called St Andrews Ale in reference to the golf course. Lots of sediment in that bottle. It's made by Belhaven.

I'd say Irish Ales tend to be red with a caramel character. Scottish Ales tend be darker with bigger richer flavor. English Ales are mild pale ale. Check out Foundersd Dirty ******* or Backwoods *******- two fine potent examples of Scotch style.

Alesmith: Grand Cru, Horny Devil, and Speedway Stout.
I h8 you. I love the speedway stout, but I live in NY, and the ONLY place I've seen it, or it's oak aged version was in Jamaica Plains in Boston. That was 2 times being in October of last year. The place never had it before or since, and because it's in beantown I only get there every month or so.On topic: Having McKenzie's Cider today, instead of the traditional beer (lol @ woodchuck.) It's a bit too sweet though, I think i'll stick with magnar's in the future.

Apparently South Bay isn't shipping right now, but they usually have a huge selection of Alesmith beers (along with pretty much anything else from the west coast) and they ship to NY. The list of beers is down at the moment, but keep an eye out and I'm sure it'll be back up soon.South Bay Drugs
