This has a nice yeasty fresh baked bread quality to go with the sweetness. Nice. If you remember the great Negra Modelo from the 80s this is a slightly lighter and maltier offering, which is an improvment, imo. Today's Negra is messed up, btw.

Starting early today? Anything exciting going down or just diving head first into the weekend?I am cracking open a Dark Horse Crooked Tree IPA. Anyone had it? Is that available outside of Michigan?

Woke with some pretty vicious lower back pain and figured the advil could use an assist. I'd rather drink in the morning than any other time of day. It's just a nice way to start the day. Coffee schmoffee.

Was in portland this week. Had some workingman's red and hammerhead ale at john barleycorns, some Chimay at 5 spice, some desheutes brewery mirror pond ale and a rogue no ale.

Last night had an Alaskan amber.

Diamond Knot Brewing IPA. Highly recommended....that you avoid this one. My daughter: "tastes like vomit"

Six Point Resin. Good enough, but like most things from them, just "good enough" and overpriced. Think I'm done with them.

Isn't that the case just about everywhere these days? I protest IPA dominance. Lost Abbey's American Wild Ale called Cable Car Kriek is a great summer ale. AleSmith's Wee Heavy is in my top five, period, but I like malty. Also, unmentioned SD brewer Latitude 33 makes a porter with cocoa and chili that's great paired with Mexican or BBQ.Last night went through some Green Flash Saison Diego...meh.

Lost Abbey doesn't do anything hoppy. Their sister brewing company "Port" sure does, but Lost Abbey doesn't. Their Serpent Stout is excellent. Their barrel program is hit and miss, but the hits are fantastic. I'm not a big Belgain style fan, but they are great at those too. Like Chaos mentioned, AleSmith does great non-hoppy beers. Wee Heavy, Speedway Stout, And of their Decadence brews, Old Numbskull, Horny Devil, Grand Cru....

I could keep going on just the stuff that is made here in town. We also get awesome distribution (Russian River!). We even just got Jester King and have Founders testing the waters down here right now too.

Just opened a Golden Cap by New Holland. It is a modern saison. Good hints of pepper- it isn't Hennepin, but a cheaper alternative. Interestingly, it isn't brewed with wheat, but spelt which is supposed to give it a more nutty flavor.

Small unassuming cream head, thin then gone to a small rim around the glass...

Cloudy amber orange and caramel color, looks summery for a tripel

Light whiff of raw potato and strong ripe apples, a hint of hard candy, butterscotch, more caramel



Unfortunately the first word what comes to mind is pedestrian. A little sweet, a little malty, no hoppiness, and no yeasties either. This would be easy to pump down bud and mgd drinkers to make them think they like craft beer, but not at the suggested retail. There's better options at half the price and at the price there's some serious brews for the taking. 2.7/5

Oddly, I'm enjoying it for the lack of bitterness and it would work well deeply chilled with cold cut sandwiches and pickles, macaroni and potato salad. As I keep drinking I'm catching some clove and nutmeg bringing a little of the belgian tradition to this triple. Nice one for the guys and gals that don't like being overpowered with too much goodness. I'd pour the rest in a chili recipe or beef brine if I had one going in order to get to my next selection, but I'll suffer through this.

Triple Voodoo Inception (Belgian style ale)I think I have a winner here for hopheads. I had to suck the head to avoid a mess and it was powerful stuff. Golden hazy color with some copper highlights.Thick three finger creamy head that fills the glass then lingers for a good long time. Pretty.Smell of green bananas, yeast, and bread. Lots going on here. Big hops similar to a Stone product (which I don't care for) but sweet and malty enough to kill any unpleasant aftertaste. Very nice. Big fan. This will deflate a Fat Tire every time. Winner. Will buy again, soon. The bottle says:

Based on a Tripel recipe but distinctly different from other trappist ales because they load up some hop varieties to give it a unique California character...

Drank two the other night and went back and bought their last case. OUTSTANDING!

Also picked up a Firestone Parabola (limited run Russian Imperial Stout), supposed to be amazing but haven't cracked it yet. Scored a perfect 100, going to crack it this weekend while bbqn.

Thoughts? I actually prefer this and Alpha King to Daisy Cutter, which is also a really good beer.

Three great beers obviously, but imo great examples of how extreme our beer palates have become. All three are styled (on the label) as a "pale ale". 10 years ago Alpha King and Zombie Dust (both at 65+ ibu and ~6.5% abv) could have passed as barley wines or strong ales. Daisy Cutter is also about 60 ibu. Even by current BJCP standards, I think all three are at the top end of the "American IPA" designation (which is stronger and more bitter than the English IPA category) and would fit in the range of the "double IPA" or "Imperial IPA" as to their ibu's. Dale's Pale Ale is also 6.5% and 65 ibu. Oskar Blues, 3F and Half Acre feel they have to market this great IPAs as "Pale Ales" just because we all expect anything called an IPA to split our tongue in half, and I guess 65 ibu just doesn't cut it anymore. Even though I love those beers and the breweries, for some reason I resent this development and find myself having greater respect for the breweries that make a balanced Pale Ale with a good malt flavor, like SNPA or Bells.
