Working through the annual box of beer I get on Father's Day - Black Husky Sproose Joose Double IPA tonight. Its a unique beer but I love it. My wife did a great job this year. Some odd, expensive beers I would never have bought for myself but am really looking forward to.

I have been contemplating making a run to Three Cellars this weekend to pick up some Sproose Joose. I have been hesitant on makign the run because I would fear it is a waste of time, being that I am unsure about the beer.

I like it but would not buy it myself. Nice to get as a gift but overpriced imo unless you really love that pine flavor. I generally like his beer though - its often on tap at Sugar Maple.

What can anyone tell me about Ballast Point beers? Any good?

Very good, from my limited experience. Sculpin is a world class IPA. The other 4-5 beers I've had of theirs are well above average. Sebowski and other west coasters would have more experience with them, they just arrived in Western NY about 6 months ago.

As Tasker mentioned, Sculpin is great. I have had Big Eye IPA and it's different and very good too. Since Sculpin is $14.99 a sixer in the Chicago area I am passing for other more affordable options, however.

Space dust was also good. Two brothers green tea ipa was interesting. Got better as I went through it.

Southern tier's 215 saison also good, and I'm not much of a saison guy. Nice spice.

There's a newish brewery in Richmond called Hardywood. They make two of the best beers I have ever had. Chocolate Heat is a chocolate stout brewed with hot peppers. You taste chocolate and the chile peppers at the same time. (% ABV. It is true sensory overload. The other is Bourbon Cru. That one is a Belgian style quad ale aged 100 days in 5 year old whiskey barrels. It's 10% ABV and packs one hell of a punch. I did not know beer could taste that much like bourbon.
