What kind of beer is everyone drinking tonight? (4 Viewers)

Chicago folks....

Surly's coming back

http://www.chicagotribune.com/features/food/stew/chi-chicago-beer-20131107,0,4579494.story

Some breweries have the all-elusive "it," which captures drinkers' hearts, minds and taste buds like few others. "It" breeds fierce loyalty, whether in the form of long lines for its rare releases or more permanent forms of devotion.

Three Floyds, of Munster, Ind., has "it" (see the link above for proof). Half Acre, near Lincoln Square, has "it." And Surly Brewing, of Minneapolis, has "it," evidenced by the four beers it has placed in the world's top 250 brews, as judged by the readers of Beer Advocate. (So is its "world class" ranking.)

That's why it was a colossal beer bummer when Surly pulled out of the Chicago market in mid-2010, citing the need to take better care of its home accounts. The move made unfortunate sense; breweries do it all the time as the demand for craft beer grows (we still miss you New Glarus).

But with its $30 million expansion underway, which includes a new brewery and tasting room near downtown Minneapolis, Surly is beginning to distribute again beyond Minnesota, and the first recipient of that good news is Chicago.

Beginning Nov. 18, Surly will be available at "a limited amount of bar and retail accounts, which are currently being determined," the brewery said today. Those accounts will be listedon the brewery's website in the coming weeks. The beer will be distributed here by Windy City Distribution, as it was previously.

To start, Surly Furious (a bold India pale ale) will be available on draft, while a host of Surly beers — including Furious, Overrated! (an even bigger IPA than Furious), Bender (a well-hopped brown ale), Coffee Bender (one of my all-time favorite beers, for what it's worth), Hell (a lager) and Cynic (a saison) — will be available in 16-ounce cans. Many of those beers will eventually be available here on draft, too.

Surly Founder Omar Ansari told me today that he expects his beer to be on tap mostly "at the beer bars where we were before." Surly cans will be available outside Minnesota for the first time.

All Day

Pipeworks Saison du Soleil

I had a bunch of other new ones (to me) last night that I can't really remember. Strubbe Lambickx was one of them.

Wow, Surly back in Chicago? That was a big point of contention a few years ago. Looking forward to being able to pick up some cans next time I'm in Chicago for sure.

I had a few really nice beers last night:

Goose Island Juliet sour wild ale - This is a rye ale aged in Cabernet Sauvignon oak barrels with blackberries and Brettanomyces. Juliet is supposed to be the most sour of Goose Island's wild ale offerings, and I think it lived up to its reputation. It was very tart and sour with flavors of blackberries, lemon, red wine, raspberries, oak, and some Brett funk. It was a real treat.

Terrapin Dos Cocoas chocolate porter - This is a chocolate porter brewed with cocoa powder and then aged on fresh cocoa nibs. This chocolate porter wasn't terribly complex, but I thought it did a really nice job of highlighting the fresh cocoa flavors. It made for a great dessert beer after a nice dinner.
Juliet :hifive:

We found some Madame Rose (one of the other "Three Sisters") in Austin last week at a small restaurant. I had a nice pour, my friend had a Coffee BCS (!). Lucky finds for us, I guess.

Just downed two Dogfish Head 90 Min Imperial IPAs. Not only one of the best taste brews out there, but at 9% ABV, it's a nice two for one effect. Gets you from NY to Baltimore nicely.

:buzzed banana:

wow...I think it just moved....

can't wait for Coffee Bender and Furious.

Anyway, I guess yesterday was International Stout Day. Gonna make up for it with some Founders Breakfast Stout and Deschutes Obsidian.

Great lakes Christmas ale, the second best beer ever. To Kentucky bourbon barrell ale.
This brings up a good question, what is the best Christmas/Holiday/Winter Themed Seasonal? SN Celebration, GL Christmas and Dark Horse 4Elf immediately come to mind. I know I am missing a lot though.

its the one I'm drinking. We buy a case per week until it sells out.

I like Celebration better, but Christmas is outstanding.

Wow! That's an incredible find. I can't believe they had Coffee BCS on tap. I guess the broader ability to get Goose Island's rare releases is one of nice upsides of the AmBev distribution.

I will have to check that out, we get Great Divide in MI, but I don't believe I have seen that one yet.

I love Celebration. Not a huge fan of GL Christmas; blasphemy, I know. Troegs Mad Elf is alright - I have to be in a mood for it though.

This Goose Island Sixth Day isn't half bad.

Is it the style you don't like of just Christmas Ale specifically? Have you had 4Elf?
Never had 4 Elf...we don't get Dark Horse, I've only had a few of their beers. Christmas Ale has always felt overly boozy and way too heavy on the spice to me. I can drink it, I came around on it a lot more last Xmas beer season. I used to hate it. I'll drink it but it's not my favorite Great Lakes seasonal.

they dialed back on the spices this year, muuuuch better. More like a beer again.

It's not earth shattering, just a different version of the style that Christmas is. Also, you boy Donaire is about to fight, weird he isn't the main event.

I went to the Avery Boulder IPA Fest today. It was pretty awesome. There were 100 IPAs from like 40 different breweries, all hosted at Avery's tap house in Boulder.

Some of the IPAs that stood out to me included:

DESTIHL Hoperation Overload

Pizza Port Solana Inhopsicated

Cigar Star Dead or Alive

Avery Double Dry-Hopped DuganA

Russian River Pliny the Elder

Verboten Half a Million

The Pizza Port Solana Inhopsicated imperial IPA was one of my favorite IPAs I've ever had. Crazy explosion of tropical fruit, mango, and banana flavors with a sweet caramel malt backbone. It was my favorite find of the night.

I thought Cigar Star's Dead or Alive was reminiscent of Troegs Nugget Nectar, which is one of my favorite beers back East. I need to go check out their brewery.

Nice. For my style, nobody makes IPAs like pizza port and alpine. That's it. That's the list.

I am a big fan of Celebration but have a hard time considering it a holiday ale. When I think of holiday ale, I think of holiday spiced beer. And GL is the best that I have had. Going to do more research next weekend when I brew a holiday porter. Gonna get some Fistmas and others.

Right, Celebration doesn't use holiday spices as its just a standard American IPA. I just put in that catagory based on name, seasonality, marketing.

Been traveling to DC / Balt from NY weekly for the last few weeks, and GB Dogfish Head 90 Minute Imperial IPA. For Amtrak to have this delectable, 9% ABV brew is a nice respite.
