What kind of beer is everyone drinking tonight? (2 Viewers)

Sipping on a Titan IPA. I'm sure I mentioned this on page 11 or something, but this is a great brewery. I love the Hercules, the Oak Aged Yeti, and the Old Ruffian. Good stuff.
Im drinking the same.

Widmer Hefeweizen tonight boys. I've grown addicted to the wheat beers; can't believe all the time I wasted with beers I could see through.
:goodposting: What other Wheat beer have you had?

Don't limit yourself to beers that are Hefewiezens or Wheats. A Witte, Wit, or White beer will be similar.
I've tried Hefeweizens from Pyramid, Paulaner, Sam Adams, Blue Moon, Ultimate Weis and the aforementioned Widmer Bros. to name a few.Of the ones I mentioned, everyone will tell you that the Paulaner is what a wheat beer should be (and is really good), but for some reason, I really enjoy the Widmer Bros served cold. Maybe it's become my "common" wheat beer : ) I truly disliked Sam Adams hefe - I'd rather down a Blue Moon (from Coors).

Got any other suggestions? I have a BevMo near by so I have decent access.
IMO Hoegarden is the gold standard. You should also try Alagash White. Others mentioned are very good too. I am not a Blue Moon fan though.
Oy, style differences abounding!!!Hefeweiss: german wheat beer, cloudy, with yeast. Think Widmer and Ramstein (US), Erdinger, Schneider (Aventinus is their weizenbock - nectar!), Franziskaner, Paulaner, etc (German).

Wit: Belgian style wheat beer, typically brewed with coriander and bitter (Curacao) orange. Think Blue Moon, Allagash, Ommegang Witte (US), Hoegaarden (Belgium)

American Wheat: Grainy tasting pale ale. Only drinkable example still being brewed that I've had is by Southern Tier (Hop Sun).

I couldn't agree more with Titan being a fantastic beer and Great Divide being a fantastic brewery. I'm pretty sure that I'd never even had one of their beers six months ago.I'm still going through the random beers that people have left at my house at poker games and such. Tonight's menu so far:

Bass Ale

Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA

Sierra Nevada Pale Ale

New Belgium 1554

I used to think Hoegaarden was the ####. But, I've been pretty disappointed in the last several I've had.

Blame InBev, the brewing conglomerate that bought Hoegaarden and apparently shortly thereafter cheapened the grain bill to increase profits. :hot:

Well, that makes sense. On a positive note, Pierre Celis, who returned Hoegaarden to prominence, then moved to Texas, started his own brewery, brewed a great beer called Celis White which drew the attention of Miller, sold to Miller, had his brewery shut down, and saw the brewery equipment moved to Michigan where Michigan Brewing revived the Celis name, is apparently returning to Texas to start brewing again. However, he can't brew under his own name, per his agreement with Miller.

This afternoon went to a little local brewpub (no bottling) and had their sampler.

Incredible IPA.

Talked to the brewmeister.

He said he used 8 pounds to dry hop.

Went with another pint of it.

Great stuff.

At home, had the last of a Hop Ottin' 6er and started a new one of Dead Guy.

Got my birthday Chimay Blue chillin' in the fridge . . .

The important part is that he gets back into production. It will be a glorious day.

Here's a bit of the article from the 1/31/06 San Antonio Express-News
The Express-News has learned that Belgian brewer Pierre Celis is working on a return to brewing in Texas. Working with an un-named Austin-area brewery, the creator of Belgium's Hoegaarden White and the late, lamented Celis Brewing Co. of Austin, could be back to brewing in the U.S. early next year.

So after Miller bought the company, what happened? I haven't seen the beer since the sale. I can only assume production continued but I'm just not getting distribution? Or did they completely shut it down and why?

Miller bought the brewery and kept it open for a few years, but it was the tail end of the last microbrew boom, so they shut it down five or so years ago. The brewery in Austin is now home to a blueprinting company.

About 2.5 years ago, Michigan Brewing bought all of the equipment that was in storage, and brought it up to Michigan. I think they also had Pierre along to supervise setup. About two years ago, they started making the White and the Pale Bock again and selling it in Michigan and also shipping it to Texas. They also make the Grand Cru and the Raspberry now. I've had a few of the Celis Whites, but they're just not the same.

Drinking a Dogfish Head Au Courant.

Tastes a bit like carbonated red wine.
I've never seen it. Thumbs up or down?Drinking a Deschutes Cinder Cone Red. Not bad, pretty straight forward amber ale.

Interesting for sure, but it takes a bit getting used to. Its listed as a Belgian Strong Pale Ale. Not sure about that.Probably not something Id want more of.

Just had my first Great Divide brew - a bomber of the Hercules. Very nice. It packs a punch at 9%, but I don't notice that at all when drinking it.

Went to the pub to throw darts today. Had the following:

Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA

Young's Old Nick Barley Wine

St. Arnolds Elissa IPA

Burton Baton earlier. Now I have to decide between Troegs Nugget Nectar, Alpha King or Titan IPA. I think I'll go Troegs.

What did ya think of the Burton?? It was a bit much for my taste...Like 90 minute with a shot of bourbon in it. Interesting but not something Id seek out again.I dont think Im a fan of oak-aged beers. The oak influnce reminds me too much of whisky.

You can find these cheap at the bars here.. I like to have one now and again, certainly at the cheap price...BTW, am I missing something? All this talk about Hefe and Weisse brews and no mention of HACKER PSCHORR? This stuff is the t-i-t-s!

I liked it, but not enough to buy regularly. Actually, for the price I didn't like it enough to buy it again. Kind of a sweet creamy taste. I like some oak aged beers, especially Oak Barrel Stout from Old Dominion and Oak Aged Yeti from Great Divide.

I went to a barrell-aged beer fest in Chicago back in November. Probably 2/3 of the beers were aged in whisky/bourbon barrels, and those didn't do a lot for me.The others, though - aged in wine barrels, mostly with wild yeast and/or lactic bacteria as part of the fermentation profile. O. M. G. The stuff from Pizza Port and New Belgium was almost religious!

Going back up there in a couple weeks for Night of the Living Ales.

Oh, and tonight: homebrewed Oatmeal Stout. Damn tasty, even if I'm a bit biased.

A Le Fin Du Monde and a Sierra Nevada Bigfoot Ale.
This years Bigfoot is AWESOME :banned:
Whenever the local pub has it on tap I tell the bartender "You *******, you want to get my license revoked, don't you?" because that beer on tap is D-A-N-G-E-R-O-U-S. Sierra Nevada is definitely hitting on all cylinders right now. This year's Celebration was one of the best versions of this perennial favorite I've had as well.

Tröegs nugget nectar is a seasonal. I might have to go back and buy up the remaining stock. This stuff is good.

I am drinking the Bigfoot right now. It is always good but, honestly, I like all of the barleywines about a year later. The bitterness of the hops diminishes and leaves you with more of a mellow flavor. Still, I give it a  .

Hoppy is an understatement for the 06 Bigfoot, which is why I like it so much. Im calling the SN distributor tomorrow and finding out where I can find it in Lakeland so I wont have to drive to Tampa to get some. The 06 is the 1st Bigfoot Ive ever tried. I like it as much as the 05 Celebration, and I looooves me some 05 Celebration.

Tried a new IPA tonight. Mt. Shasta Moutnain High IPA. It's OK, but I really wish that I had a single bottle instead of a six pack. Tasted like metal for half of the first bottle.

Up next: Stone IPA and Deschutes Mirror Pond. Then maybe a Racer 5.

I love me some Left Coast Brews.

Thanks for the post: maybe the above explains my total dislike for the Sam Adams Hefe; I actually thought maybe I had a bad batch (bought from Costco), but is sounds like that is their intent. To Wild Young Billy: I wasn't trumpeting Blue Moon as great, just trying to tell everyone how bad the Sam Adams was.

I killed off the last of my Widmer's last night so I'll be out looking for some of you guys' recommendations. I love the creamy head you get on the Widmer; the other compare to that? Also, do you guys piss around with the the lemon or orange slice as the wheat beers call for?

I just got a call from my SIL. She and my BIL went to the mountains of NC this weekend for some skiing. I had the bright idea to ask a favor, and now I have a nice present waiting for me at home - a sixer of DFH 60 minute and a 4-pack of DFH 90 minute. I will finally get to see what all the fuss is about.

Both are great. The 90 is friggin HUGE but awesome. One of my favorites right now. Both have alot of malt, so expect alot of sweetness.Im drinking a Wild Goose IPA from Frederick Brewing in Maryland. Its not bad. Not bad at all. Pleasantly surprised.

The Hercules Double IPA yesterday was just great and left me wanting more so I imagine these are really going to be right up my alley too. It'll be a few days before I get to try one though so I'll have to savor the anticipation just a little longer.

Hacker Pschorr Oktoberfest is my favorite Oktoberfest. A friend of ours wanted me to point that out to everyone.

Also, every time I think we're buidling a good beer culture here in Austin, I read about someone going to something like a barrel-aged festival and realize that we've got a long way to go. The Texas Craft Brewers Festival is coming up in early May, but that's about all we've got as far as festivals go.

That's one I tried to find back in season but couldn't. I think I know where I can get some later this year though. Glad to hear another positive review. Remind us again when it's time. ;)

Hacker Pschorr Oktoberfest is my favorite Oktoberfest.
Mine too. I had 7 liters of it my first trip to Oktoberfest in Munich. Somehow I still made it back to the hotel.
