What kind of beer is everyone drinking tonight? (4 Viewers)

Got a call from the wife today at work. "Honey, what did you order from Belgium?" Looks like my Westy is here and I won't be able to touch it for another week due to the stupid medication I'm on.

The Holy Grail has arrived!!!!!
Nice.My Russian River Beatification bottles arrived today too. They better be good. $40 for four 375ml bottles is a little steep, even by my standards.
If you check the reviews they are getting on BA, you might find them to be worth the price

And you can always turn around and trade them....Russian River is apparently sold out.

Crap. I knew I should have bought more.

FYI for those around here. Keep checking back in at Russian River's website. Sanctification (a 100% Bret beer) Batch 002 is supposed to be released next month in 750ml bottles. Seeing as how it took just a little over a week for Beautification to sell out, I'm guessing that it won't last very long.

I doubt it. I'm not really set up well to age beer at my home. I don't have a cellar or a very cool place in my home without leaving the AC on all day. I need to invest in one of those mini wine cellar things. I saw one the other day for about $250.

I bought a 75 bottle wine cellar here:

http://www.beveragefactory.com/

They did a great job, but be aware of the fact that their standard delivery is only to your doorstep. And the in-house delivery is stupidly priced. So have someone to help bring it in. Apparently the delivery guys won't do it for a tip either, as the company cuts them out if they get caught doign that. Anyway, I bought a Danby and it's been fantastic so far.

It was marked at $499 when I bought it I thought.

http://www.beveragefactory.com/refrigerato...dwc612blp.shtml

I'm sure there are cheaper ones, but a buddy told me that the vibration is minimized on this one, and it has a digital temp control, which is what you want. One note I would point out for beer storage is that a regular bottle cap beer should be stored standing up, so the beer doesn't touch the bottle cap. Corked beers are fine on the side obviously. I never knew this until that same buddy (who stores a decent number of beers) pointed it out.

Thanks for the info. That's a nice looking cabinet. Can you take the shelves out for upright storage?Anyway, here's a section lifted from beeradvocate that talks about storage. They say to leave all bottles upright.

http://beeradvocate.com/beer/101/store.php

Now there's a lot of debate surrounding storing a beer upright vs. laying it down like a wine, specifically towards corked bottles. Some "experts" have faith in the old school wine way, that a corked beer should be kept on its side in order to keep the cork from drying out, while others believe that it doesn't really matter. In our opinion, ALL beer should be stored upright. Here's why we believe so, along with some other interesting facts about storage and cork:

Cork cells are impregnated with a waxy material, called suberin, that is almost impermeable to water or gases. Cork is also buoyant due to the presence of trapped air in the cavities of the waterproof dead cells. When cut these cells act as suction-cups and become adhesive, thus making them ideal bottle stoppers.

Natural cork is sometimes prone to drying out, however we've never had any problems -- even with beers aged 10+ years upright. Today's modern plastic/synthetic, screw cap, agglomerated, technical and capsulated corks are a lot less prone to shrinkage, to the point where it's not even worth worrying about. If a beer has been both corked and capped or corked then waxed, cork shrinkage is definitely not a major concern.

The inside of the bottle already contains its own humidity level, and as a result will not dry out the portion of the cork inside the bottle if stored properly. So the idea of laying a beer down to ensure that the liquid touches the cork to prevent drying is a moot point -- remember "almost impermeable to water", the cork is not going to act like a sponge. It's the cork exposed to the open air that should be of concern, however an ample amount of humidity is all that is required to stop any exposed cork from drying out during long-term storage.

Cork problems are usually a sign of a bad cork or a cork that has passed its lifespan, not necessarily a sign of poor storage. Agglomerated corks last for about 1-3 years before beginning to disintegrate. Plastic corks eventually lose their elasticity, too. We suggest contacting the brewery to find out what type of cork they used, and its expected lifespan.

Long storage of a beer on its side can create a yeast ring (or water-mark) inside the bottle, which will not settle. Storing a beer upright will ensure that the yeast compacts to the bottom of the bottle.

The upright storage method decreases the amount of exposed beer thus slowing oxidation of the beer.

Another real good reason for not storing a beer on its side is that long exposure to the cork (especially non-taint treated natural cork) can impart cork flavours within the beer. The alcohol in beer draws out that mouldy/musty character of the cork and in fact can taint the beer. In our opinion this doesn't add any wanted complexity to the beer. Natural cork can also harbour certain fungal bacterias which are believed to create an off-flavour compound called 2,4,6, Trichloroanisole or simply TCA, which renders its victim lifeless and dull to the taste.

Many vintage beers are kept on beer shelves for quite some time before being sold. Don't you think beer stores would shelve their corked beers like wine, if they were meant to be laid-down like wine?

We've spoken to dozens of brewers, who all recommend the upright method of beer storage. Even world-renowned brewers like Chimay and Riva suggest that you store all of their beers upright.

Just because a self-proclaimed "beer expert" recommends that beer be laid-down like wine, doesn't mean that they are 100% correct. There's more than one opinion in the world, and opinions change over time.

Check out your local Home Depot and Lowes (or similar stores). Ive seen some for around the $100-$150 range that dont hold alot of bottles, but maybe a case of bombers...

Why go through all the trouble of having the fancy glass door ones? Just get a Sanyo 4912 or something like it. It holds a good amount for a lot less money.

nice pull
Thanks. Was surprised to see that I could still order the trio, so I got two. Also have to find a place to put the Beatification. But that's a serioulsy good "problem" to have of course. Looks like I need to rent some space out and have me a par-tay.

Second shipment of Westy is in possession now. It will join its brethren in the cellar right...........now.Party time would be a good idea at some point. We'll see. No clue who would be interested. Or where it might be. I can look into it if people want to make the trip. I'd basically rent the space out. Bring the "extras" from the cellar, and maybe collect a few bucks from everyone for some above-roadkill grade food. People can bring their "extras". We can call it "BIF Extras Beerfest 2006". Something simple to start, and maybe it evolves into something greater. People can make a roadtrip into Chicago or wherever for it.

So, anyone interested? Even Furley, who already replied. I think Gator would be interested, although he's way out there on the Left Coast of course. Anyone want to talk specifics here?

Is anyone else having problems with staying logged in on RB? I use Firefox, but tried IE also. Neither would stay logged in and allow me to rate anything. I checked their handy link for that problem, but nothing fixed it. They don't even list any fixes for FF, but I couldn't figure anything out.

Anyway....

Beer #2 today was a Bell Third Coast. Decent but not great. Was told it was a very good beer, but I would rate it below that at about "Pretty/didn't suck" level.

Beer #3 today is Wild Ride IPA courtesy of Mssr. Tip Top.

I looked on their website under beers in the 'coming soon' section and then called the brewery to confirm exactly when 'soon' was. "Next month somtime" was the answer I got.

Oh, and I had one of my Beautifications tonight. Holy crap this is a good beer. Tried the Batch 001 first. This might be the most unique and interesting beers I have ever tasted, while at the same time being just damn good.

A word to the wise, let it warm a bit. A whole lot more comes though after this bad boy shakes off the chill.

i thought the Third Coast (not the Third Coast Old Ale) was a bottle pour. awful beer.

See, this doesn't help. I only have three, and now I won't be able to bring myself to drink them. Couldn't you have just said, "It's crap. Drink it now to get it out of your house, and so it won't take up any space in your storage."? Would that have been so hard. Even better, tell people who have more than one of each batch to open every one they have so they won't be bamboozled into this great beer and thus have to wring their hands when deciding when to drink it.I mean seriously, lie to us.

WTF has this world come to when I agree with Furley? Really, dude, stop talking sense. It has no place in this thread. Banish thyself! We must not allow sensibility to enter this thread.

Hittin' the Southern Tier IPA pretty heavily so far. As far as the cans go:

Pork Slap Pale Ale: Interesting brew. Dark for a pale ale, more of an amber, good maltiness and bitterness, but replacing the expected flavor and aroma hops is a flavor and aroma redolent of mint - specifically, a variety of spearmint called Chocolate Mint which is less intensely minty with hints of cocoa.

Heinnieweisse - Solid Hefeweisse in a can. Well balanced, flavorful - definitely gonna be seeing this one again this summer.

 #### was not good. i was really disappointed. that was my first Bell's beer too.. :X

Beer #4 might a New Glarus Fat Squirrel. Not sure whether I'm gonna open a third "Tip Top Beer" on this evening.

FYI - big time thunder storn rolling into Chicago right now. Saw the lightning and heard the thunder 20-30 minutes before the rain started. Currently raining kinda hard north of the cit-ay.

My first Bell's too. Maybe I'll just start sticking to their stout lines.

I haven't had Supplication. I saw it a little over a year ago, but didn't buy it for some reason. The best way I can describe it is this. Upon pour it reminds me of a Belgian Pale. Even the smell to some degree. But then the taste .... whoa ... sour as all hell, but in a good way. There is some dirty, barnyard thing going on too that has an odd, yet nice interplay with the fruity tartness. But wait, it's sweet too. WTF? I don't have the words to describe as well as I should. I have never had anything quite like it.

I won't lie, but I will say this. I can seriously see some people hating this beer just because it is so different.

You're not making it easier for me, ya know. I still haven't opened the Fat Squirrel, so maybe.... Whoops, the Beat's aren't cold, and are in storage. Never mind.I just can't wait to try one of these now. Might do so over the weekend with a beer buddy.

I've generally found that the styles and beers that you mention every so often are beers and styles that I like when I try them. So your track record in terms of front-running my own "likes" is pretty well established for me.Now Furley on the other hand......

I can't wait until you and Skylord give them a try so that I can read your opinions. I respect both of your beer tastes quite a bit.Now if that damn Kilgore Trout would hurry up with the Beermann's Barleywine, I'd be all set.
