What kind of beer is everyone drinking tonight? (1 Viewer)

Oh, and I had one of my Beautifications tonight. Holy crap this is a good beer. Tried the Batch 001 first. This might be the most unique and interesting beers I have ever tasted, while at the same time being just damn good.

A word to the wise, let it warm a bit. A whole lot more comes though after this bad boy shakes off the chill.
See, this doesn't help. I only have three, and now I won't be able to bring myself to drink them. Couldn't you have just said, "It's crap. Drink it now to get it out of your house, and so it won't take up any space in your storage."? Would that have been so hard. Even better, tell people who have more than one of each batch to open every one they have so they won't be bamboozled into this great beer and thus have to wring their hands when deciding when to drink it.I mean seriously, lie to us.
I won't lie, but I will say this. I can seriously see some people hating this beer just because it is so different.
I've generally found that the styles and beers that you mention every so often are beers and styles that I like when I try them. So your track record in terms of front-running my own "likes" is pretty well established for me.Now Furley on the other hand......
I can't wait until you and Skylord give them a try so that I can read your opinions. I respect both of your beer tastes quite a bit.Now if that damn Kilgore Trout would hurry up with the Beermann's Barleywine, I'd be all set.
Thanks. Here's an indication of how ####ty my week has been so far -- that is by far the most uplifting thing that anyone has said (or typed) to me this week. Don't get me wrong, that is actually a high compliment IMO. But I have to admit that I had somewhat higher goals laid out for myself this week when it started.

:goodposting: I've been waiting patiently for this one as well.
Ahem, correction, Beermann's Bourbon Barrel Barleywine.Considering the recent discussions, I had to throw that in. :D

Beer #2 today was a Bell Third Coast. Decent but not great. Was told it was a very good beer, but I would rate it below that at about "Pretty/didn't suck" level.
i thought the Third Coast (not the Third Coast Old Ale) was a bottle pour. awful beer.
WTF has this world come to when I agree with Furley? Really, dude, stop talking sense. It has no place in this thread. Banish thyself! We must not allow sensibility to enter this thread.
And I agree also, it's crap. Dump it out even if you have ones that haven't been opened. I wouldn't give it to people I don't like.

Being listed with Skylord should be a compliment to anyone.

alright now, let's stop with all the gayities. I'm starting to think y'all are the guys who get drunk and tell everyone "I love you, man! No, I really mean it, I love you!"

No argument here. I had someone else grab some for me, thinking I'd get the Old Ale, got Third Coast Beer instead. Tasted like creamed corn (DMS - dimethyl sulfide). I think I dumped 5 of the 6.I've noticed this character in a few of their beers, but the darker and/or hoppier ones tend to cover it better. Hell, after a visit to the brewpub a few years back, I went as far as sending an e-mail to the QC guy. I mean, when I can taste DMS in a freakin' porter...

gets a 3.44 at BA. i thought other people must really like it to pull the average up that high.. if i reviewed, it'd get 1's across the board.

I didn't dislike it as much as the rest of you. I would have rated it in the 3.1-3.2 range, which for me is still drinkable but I wouldn't drink it more than once

I had forgot to chill it for my birthday, so now I am saving it for the weekend. I did have the Stone RIS last night, and was quite impressed. I am glad you sent me two, because the second one is going head to head with the Speedway Stout I bought. The Stone to me was about as well balanced as any Imperial Stout that I have had before. Not too thick or oily, nice hops and great mouthfeel. I had an Expedition Stout from Bell's a few days ago that was way too thick and was too cloying. The Stone, however, was perfect. Also had the Speakeasy Old Godfather barleywine. Other than the high alcohol content, this actually was pretty mild in taste compared to some other barleywines I have had. I honestly likened the taste to be more similar to a Double Arrogant ******* (though not as good) as opposed to a more traditional barleywine. Hop bitterness with some toffee/honey malt taste and a medium to thin mouthfeel. Pretty good beer, but one that I would almost hesitate to call a barleywine.

I really like the Stone RIS. Just wish they'd hurry up and get some back in Memphis. :hot: I keep reading about putting beers head to head. How exactly are you comparing them? A drink of one then a drink of the other, etc?

I think I am going to open them both and alternate a pint from each. I don't have anyone that I know to split them with, so I plan on getting quite a buzz after finishing both big bottles (the wife is not an impy stout fan). This is the first oppurtunity I have had to drink too exceptional beers like this back to back.

Shotgun one, then the other. If yer still standing 30 minutes later, then the first one wins. If you're on yer ###, then the second one wins."We're not leavin' 'til we're heavin'!"

do you do anything to cleanse your palate between the change over, or am I justputting way too much ####ing thought into this? :D

You're putting more thought into it than I am. I'm not big on reviewing every single taste nuance, but I figured by alternating them I could get a good sense for which one I liked better and why. A pallate cleanser is a good idea. I'm sure the geeks at BA have some thoughts on this.

In all seriousness, think of the way a wine tasting goes. You don't drink the whole thing, you sample the drink then clean your palate, then sample the other. That's what I would do if I were comparing two big beers like this. Drink a small amount of each side by side, and eat some bread or something bland in between. Figure out which one you like, drink that one first. Then drink the second. However, I should point out that on "school nights" I have trouble finishing a regular 22oz'er, much less two of them. But that's just me.

I actually don't even drink on school nights. Figured going to the gym then coming home and knocking out some beer would be counterproductive.I wait til the weekend and then make up for the days I missed. :banned:

What means this?

So true.  I really love the flavor of bourbon barrel beers.  I guess some people think that its a bit over the top.

I say they just don't like bourbon and that loving vanilla flavor it adds to the beer.
I have had several bourbon barrell aged beers and have liked every one of them. The aging seems to work with a lot of different styles too. I have had bourbon aged Pales, IPA's, Triples, Stouts, and soon to try a barleywine. The latest one I had was the Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale, which had one of the stongest bourbon tastes of any of the ones I have tried. I would love to see a beer soaked in a Scotch barrel.

Just picked up some of THIS.

Similar finish to something like a Fat Tire, but with a deeper red color. Not the ideal selection for this time of year, better suited for the fall/winter months, IMO.

I saw that on the shelves over the weekend, but passed. I've never been a huge fan of Widmer Bros, but maybe I'll give it a shot. Then again, I also think that Fat Tire might be the most overrated beer in the Western Hemisphere, so I won't go into it with high expectations.

Re: Westvleteren

Is it normal for them to bottle the beers in different bottles? I get the whole "no labels" thing. I like that. But two of my bottles are different than the others. They have a "ring" around the neck. The other four are completely blank bottles. I like the blank bottle schtick.

Thats just great news. I've got four of these pups.I love Russian River. I can only dream that it stacks up to Supplication..but if it does!
Russion River = mmmmm. Without reading the last 152 pages; anyone posted RR's Pliny the Elder? = possibly my favorite.Edited to add: anyone have Pliny the Younger before? = 11.0% alcohol  It might be worth a trip to N. California.

Yeah, that's been covered a decent amount. But we never get tired of hearing about it. Especially those us (ME!!!!!) that can't get it. :) That's at or near the top of my Wants List though. It gets high marks from the guys here, as does Younger.

Edit to Pigskin's edit:

Almost certainly worth the trip (when ISN'T it?). But you can get it in several states. They list them on their site. I could drive to Munster, IN to get it. I choose not to since I live decently north of Chicago now. I did drive through there last Sat and Sun, so I waved when I went by .

I'm not sure about that. Plineys are not bottled and I haven't heard of them being on tap anywhere outside of California.

When I was in Munster, I saw no Russian River at all. Plenty of other goodies though.

I threw out 3 different beers last night at a tasting that were awful. Didn't feel bad about it at all. Just went and got a Two Hearted or Masala Mama to make up with my taste buds.

####, that's twice I agree with Gator. This shouldn't happen. I hate my life.

Brooklynerweisse at the ex-brewpub, now-beerbar - gotta love a big ol' Hefeweisse on a hot humid evening.

Back on to my beloved Southern Tier IPA now.
