What kind of WINE did you drink last night? (1 Viewer)

Alright.

Trebbiano is also known as?
Not sure, but it is a common white wine grape from Italy. Probably has several other names depending on the region/country it is grown in (not unlike Shiraz (Aust.) and Syrah (just about everywhere else).

This thread has legs....skinny, feminine legs. It wont catch the more manly BEER thread

:boxing:
That thread has 1900 posts in two years. We're doing pretty good for less than a week. There are a million more kinds of wine than beer, so there is hope for this thread...Nothing wrong with a cool brew on a sunny day.

True, but once the beer snobs took it over, the legs got BIG. Plus, theres 2 Beer of the Month threads AND a beer-it-forward thread that take away from the "beer tonight" thread....Im just messin around anyway...nothing against wine, I just dont drink it.

I would be interested in starting an ***official*** thead that I could update with our selections & tasting notes. Not to hijack your contribution of course, but we should be more organized than those knuckle dragging beer drinkers.

No sweat. Beer and wine were both acquired tastes for me. I didn't start appreciating wine until just before I finished university. I drank beer since I was 16, but didn't really begin to enjoy it until I started playing more golf. There's an idea: a wine cart for golf courses...

There are a million more kinds of wine than beer,
Actually, I read an article a few months ago that stated that there are actually MORE varities of beer than wine.Ill try to find the article later but am enjoying a good beer right now so I dont have time

Cool. Hopefully I'll get some help from Jules & company. I certainly am no expert, but I would love to our master list together. I'll work on it later tonight probably.

I dig that idea!I would really like to see what people are drinking. If someone has a wine they like please let us know.

I am going to reccomend the one that I have talked about on here often.

Los Planos Syrah. This one is 100% Syrah from the Aragon region of Spain.

In it you will find a softer Syrah then some people are used to. I love this wine!

$7-10 a bottle

Which wines have no tannins?

Don't drop the ball here Jules. :boxing:
No clue here. Vinegar? A wine I wouldn't like very much? You boys be askin' some tough ones!
Very sweet wines
nope...just not very much.Tannins are part of the process of making everywine....some just have more than others.

What do Tannins do for the wine?
Tannins preserve wine and give it structure.
Ding! Your turn.

Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if that is the case. I walked into a beer and wine store in D.C. a few years ago with a friend and was absolutely stunned by the hundreds of kinds of beer on display.

That was sort of my intention in getting this started -- ergo my first (more lengthy) review in the original post. Perhaps we can rename this thread and get it more focussed on reviews/tasting notes.

jules....help with some ideas for the format of the OFFICIAL thread...ie A running list of our choices & notes? What else does it need?

Do it, but you gotta add our picks on the first post (edit) and keep it going for this thread to have true "legs"...nice pun.

If it's imported: Who is the importing company? What is the Grape variety

Price per bottle

Country of Origin

What we paid for the bottle

Here's two questions. The first one is in honour of my good friend that introduced me to wine in law school. The second one is in honour of another good friend that introduced me to winemaking (from actual grapes).

1. What country did "they" recently confirm Zinfandel originated from?

2. What is the mixture of grapes and juice called after grapes are pressed to begin fermentation?

Depends on the "rules". Wine is, for all practical purposes, fermented grape juice aged in oak. Besides some basic compounds to control sugar content, alcohol content, etc nothing else is added. Can the rules be bent to other fruits? If not then wine is constrained.Beer isn't constrained by these boundaries. Hops now a days make up fraction of the ingredients that can and will go into beer to define its character. There are far more varieties of beer than wine because of this.

i gotta count the monies & go home. And finish this Syrah from Gerry Rowland. Ramspeck Syrah...$10 wholesale. 600 cases made I think. Really good...actually needs decanting.

I'll give it a try tomorrow and see where it leads. Hopefully not too cumbersome.

Kind of why I (or you)want to start a new one....reserve the first posts & do one post for each of the major varietals + others. I seem to have a lot of time to post, so if you don't want to do it let me know.

Thoughts?

What about Aus/NZ, Chile/Argentina, South Africa? We don't need to list the various regions (Rapel Valley, Marlborough, Stellenbosch, etc) but just the country. Or we could just have Australia/NZ, South America, Other.

The reason I say this is because there are some decent wines for the price there. For example Casa Lapastolle cab's from Chile, sauvignon blanc's from NZ, and one of my favorites: Altos Las Hormigas Colonia Las Liebres bonarda from Argentina.

And I don't have the $$ to be trying expensive bordeaux or burgundies.

Just a thought.

I do. And look forward to hearing thoughts.A few buddies (and their wives) and I decided to start a "once a month dinner" where we sample wines from various regions. We'll merely tell the sommellier what part of the world, or which varietal we'd like to focus on each month. Then we'll tell them a price range to stay in.

This month is the second month....
