Worst LATE SEASON Meltdown

TAMPA - Only needed 1 more win with 4 games to play, but lost last 4 games after Monte Kiffin announced his departure. (including lost last 2 games at home where they were 6-0 at home previously) Kiffin's signature stout defense played great in the 1st half of the season and then horrible down the stretch, especially the putrid tackling displayed lately.

DALLAS - The usual December meltdown and Romo's inability to win in big games. Lost 3 of last 4 games.....and all 4 of those opponents made the playoffs. The media circus with Romo, TO, Witten, and Jerry Jones.

DENVER - Up 3 games with 3 games left to play. Couldn't even beat Buffalo at home in Week 16. Horrible defense.

NYJETS - Beat Tenn (in Tenn) in Week 12 and everybody was listing them as a Top 5 NFL team at the time. Then, proceeded to lose 4 of the last 5 games to teams like DEN, @SF, @SEA, and MIA. The Favre media circus and expectations/comparisons with GB A.Rodgers. And now, the Mangini firing.

CLEVELAND - Don't really think they deserve to be in this poll b/c they are so far off the playoff radar, but they didn't have an offensive TD over the last 6 games.

Dallas, by quite a bit. I never considered any of the other teams contenders, even when they were leading their divisions. Dallas is stacked with great players, there's no excuse for them missing the playoffs.

:goodposting: While the Jets meltdown sucks - I think a lot of the expectations were overblown due to Favre...It was still a 4-12 team that won 9 games with 1/3 of the starters new... The better teams in this league have a core of players that have been around and know the system - The Jets core had a lot of new guys... My expectations never got too carried away...Dallas And Denver I expected to be better teams in the league. Dallas was a SB favorite.

I might be biased because I live in the area but I vote Denver. They choked. It was all theirs and they let it slip away.

 
I get Dallas' collapse as being noteworthy, but how is it worse than Denver?

Dallas lost on the road to a division rival with a 6th seed on the line. Denver lost on the road to a division rival with a division crown and 4 seed on the line. Meanwhile Denver led the division for SIXTEEN WEEKS, the first team in league history to lead from start to finish only to miss the playoffs in the final week. Dallas was considered a wild card contender by most to enter the season [Giants being the favorite], and lost their star QB for awhile, Cutler was healthy all year. Last but not least, Dallas finished 9-7, which is usually good enough for the playoffs, while Denver fell to 8-8.

 
Has to be Dallas. Denver and the Jets weren't that good to begin with, so their "collapses" were really just reversions to the mean IMO. Tampa would be a good answer, too, but Dallas just has too much star power on its roster to be that bad.

I didn't know about Cleveland's inability to score an offensive TD. That's sad.

Dallas looked unstoppable at the beginning of the season, so their drop was really noticeable.

I was really :wall: by their insistance on maintaining the same poor pass blocking schemes that were exposed week after week.

Denver was winning with smoke and mirrors all season. They had the SD game literally given to them by the officials, and they somehow managed to rack up a lead in the division despite having what everyone recognized at the time as a godawful defense coupled with inexplicably bad results by their closest division rival. Well, their defensive ineptitude finally caught up with them, San Diego got things back on track, and the better team won the division. Nothing remarkable about that at all IMO.

Denver's collapse was historic because they led the division the whole year, but they still ended up 8-8 and lost the division on a tie-breaker. Not exactly a powerhouse team in a powerhouse division that fell apart.

To me, the biggest collapse was the Jets. They were firmly in control of their destiny and beat the undeafeted Titans. Then they proceeded to lose games against awful teams. How do you lose all three of these games?

Denver - 8-8?

San Fran - 7-9?

Seahawks - 4-12?

Exactly. Dallas down the stretch lost to:Pitt 12-4Balt 11-5Philly 9-6-1and beat NYG 12-4Sure they got whipped yesterday, but Dallas lost to good teams and even beat a Super Bowl favorite. Hardly a collapse to me, just poor performance against better teams.

Had to go Dallas. They were being pimped as the Super Bowl favorite (preseason), paid a big price for Roy Williams, and missed the playoffs.

I kind of figured the media whores in Dallas and the drama queens in New York would dominate this poll, but to me it has to be the 9-3 Bucs stout run defense suffering a complete meltdown against weak competition.

This is the correct answer. It doesn't get any worse than losing four in a row including the Raiders at home.
 
All Tampa had to do to make the playoffs was beat Oakland at home.....and they didn't do it. At least all of the other teams in this poll lost to playoff teams in Week 17.

 
While the Broncos losing to the Chargers in San Diego isn't a meltdown, that loss to Buffalo at home sure was. Can't believe they couldn't win any of those last four games.

 
Voted Tampa - they had the Chargers and Raiders at home in the last two weeks and lost both, giving up 31 points to a team averaging 16 a game. And Kiffin must have left for Knoxville a month ago, because his defense was awful in December.

ETA: This year had a very robust crop of meltdowns - some of the other ones listed would have been easy choices in other seasons.

Tampa easily. How can you lose to OAKLAND in a 'win and you're in'? 2 weeks ago they were all but locks for the playoffs.

I'm surprised at people voting for Dallas. What did they do outside week 1 to give anyone confidence that they would beat a good team when it counted? Baltimore and Philly are both very good teams.

 
Tampa has got to be the in-season answer to this question, but taking into account the preseason you have to go with Dallas. Not only did they fail to make the playoffs, but they finished 3rd in their division. Not only that, but they went into the final week of the season with a chance to make the playoffs and got downright demolished by a divisional foe.

 
Dallas is always overhyped and therefore in everyone's opinion a failure if they don't make the superbowl.

Guess what folks, they haven't won a playoff game in awhile. Let's stop saying they're the most talented until they start winning playoffs. I'm a fan and disgusted at this season, but I wouldn't say this was the greatest of the meltdowns in the NFL this year. They did not live up to expectations. They have been riddled with injuries and inconsistent all year.

My vote is for Tampa at 9-3 and losing 4 straight. Not beating Oak at home favored by 13 is a meltdown.

Dallas had a meltdown in the final game. Other than that, they played well against quality opponents in Dec.

They played the toughest schedule over the last four weeks and had their chances of getting in.

They lost a close game to Pitts. that they had late. They bounced back and beat the NYG's. Then Wade had a brain freeze in the Balt. game calling two run blitzes late that cost them that game. Finally, they collapsed against the Eagles.

 
If you're talking about a late season meltdown...put me down for the Cowboys. But when it comes to expecting a Super Bowl, that's a "bet the field" proposition for me because the odds are against any one particular team anyway. They narrowly missed their mark.

I think the Bucs, Jets and Broncos were middle of the pack contenders that built some expectations during the season and then narrowly missed capitalizing on them by dropping a game or two. I don't know that they missed the mark that much.

If your're talking about just a plain old miss between what was expected and what happened on the season with no real explanation, I'd make it the Browns. While the Boys were a chic Super Bowl pick coming into the season, the Browns were a chic playoff pick. I think the Browns have more vastly underperformed their expectations than did the Cowboys, Bucs, Broncos or Jets.

 
I understand the Dallas votes given the spectacular way they fell to Philly, but the truth is they played a pretty brutal schedule and lost mostly to quality opponents. Except for the last game, they were generally competitive in those loses. While dissapointing, it's nowhere near the collapse of the year.

Cleveland doesn't belong in the discussion.

The Jets have to be dissapointed, but really...who expected any better then 8 or 9 wins for them this year anyway? They finished where they were supposed to finish, and were competitive in virtually every game.

Denver sucked from day one. They got a gift from Hochulli and a soft early season schedule. While their collapse is in some ways historic...it was also forseeable. Unfortunately, I voted Denver before I really thought it through all the way or I would have voted for....

Tampa Bay. No shame in losing to Carolina and Atlanta on the road, but how do you lose to Oakland at home with a playoff berth on the line? While I considered them a bubble team at the start of the year, mid-season they looked like a sure thing.

 
Why is Detroit not in this poll - they lost their last 16 of the season.

Broncos were handed first place by the officials in the first SD-DEN game, if SD beats DEN, DEN isn't alone in first the whole year - and actually would've been eliminated going into week 17. They had a bazillion injuries at LB & RB, and that's not enough for biggest meltdown.

Jets played over their heads at TEN, and then got beat by 2 lesser teams & Denver (roughly same caliber of team) Not nearly as bad as the Bucs.

The Bucs lost 4 straight, including OAK at home to clinch a playoff spot. They did lose a couple to very good division rivals, but if they win those, they are the 2 seed, not outside looking in.

The worst single-game meltdown at the end of the year, possibly in NFL history, has to be Dallas for the absolute sucktasticness of that "effort" they put up. However they weren't putrid over a multi-game stretchat the end, but that one game was really stinky. If getting trounced by the Rams happened at the end of the year - they'd take this easily.

All of the teams listed were within 1 game of the playoffs or were considered "in" late in the season and fell out of the playoffs. (except for Clev, which I debated not listing)
 
I voted the Jets... the key was the title of the poll... Late Season Meltdown... with the Jets at 8-3 and having defeated the Titans and New England... you just kinda took for granted that they would win the division with the schedule that remained. And then to lost to Pennington at the end... even worse. That meltdown led to the coach being fired.

My #2 would be Tampa... another team in position that just imploded... losing to the raiders was horrible... but even at 8-3 I didn't feel they had a chance at the division with Carolina and Atlanta playing well.

I didn't choose Dallas because of the last 4 opponents were all strong... and when Romo went down, expectations shrunk for this stacked team.

Who cares about the Browns...

The Bronco's were tough, they were an mid season disappontment to me... after such a strong start... there weaknesses just kept popping up... they disappointed way too early.

I agree. I never thought the Broncos were that good of a team to begin with but did think the Bucs and Jets were definitely playoff bound. I also agree with the sentiment that Dallas's injuries changed their expectations and they would probably qualify under the category of biggest disappointments overall in 2008.

agreed. and to add, the jets brought in favre for a playoff/superbowl run...certainly not for the long haul. and, what was it, in the last five games he was 2 TD and 9 INTs. the guy who is famous for comebacks, brought in to win games, ultimately choked and couldn't will a victory to secure a playoff spot. the NYJ couldn't sack a QB or protect one. coles whined for the ball but couldn't catch one. the team simply collapsed...
