Calling someone to do it doesn't count...
Back in the day, several. I haven't had a flat in at least a decade. After posting that, I am sure I'll be changing 3 flats in the next month.Several times! Last one was about six or seven years ago. I timed myself…. under 20 minutes.
I also made my boys “practice” before they got their license.

This is awesome. Definitely far beyond anything that I’m capable of. Do you watch Roadkill at all? Soo much of that series is them fixing their cars on the sides of roads. Lol.I have changed a timing belt/water pump/oil pump/ball joint on the side of the road.
While I know how to do it, shockingly I’ve never had to do it myself. I’ve just had insanely good luck. I think there was one time where a new vehicle that I purchased somehow got a flat tire within like a week of me getting it. I wasn’t in a hurry the day it happened so I utilized the roadside assistance package that came with the purchase. I’m glad I did that, because they replaced the tire with a brand new full size tire. Had I did it myself, I would have been driving around on one of those small donuts until I took the car to the dealership.

We're all manly men here, of course we have.
Here I was imagining you out in the blistering sun with cars whizzing by at a 100mph.This is awesome. Definitely far beyond anything that I’m capable of. Do you watch Roadkill at all? I think I've seen it before. I'm more of a Vice Grip Garage guy. I do all my own maintenance on four cars and I don't have a driveway or garage so everything I do has to be on the side of the road. I'm pretty sure that's not normal.
I have a story here. About a decade ago I hit a pothole and blew out a tire. We're all manly men here, of course we have. More interesting question would be have you ever stopped to help a stranger change a tire?
Two months ago I changed a tire on a brand new Rogue SUV. The lady said she hit a curb and was on her way to visit her husband in the ER. He had 2 days of fever, bad headache, so he took an Uber to get a CT scan. She came later to the ER with a 3 year old in the back seat. It was 10pm, Sunday. Couldn't find the jack. After 10 minutes, I googled a video, voila. In the meantime, she called roadside assistance but was told it would take 1 to 2 hours. Yes, finding the right place on the car to engage the jack is crucial. It was at the entrance road to a hospital, eventually hospital security came and lent a hand. Those younger dudes hadn't been trained in the nuances of changing a tire, like this older dude.Lessoned learned that day! Always check out the jack on your car in the daylight so you know how to use it![]()
I had changed the tire on two previous cars a Volvo and an Isuzu and both had a much easer way to do it than this car, an Audi. Two months ago I changed a tire on a brand new Rogue SUV. I'm in this camp. I remember when my wife and I were first dating we got one while at dinner. We actually noticed it while looking out the window out at the car. So rather than get dirty and sweaty, we called AAA (she had it) to come out while we dined. While I know how to do it, shockingly I’ve never had to do it myself. I’ve just had insanely good luck. You’re Hugh!Of course.
In high school there were 3 of us always cruising in my friends OG tiny civic. We pretended we were a pit crew everytime something went wrong. we got a round of applause in a 7/11 parking lot when we changed the tire in under 3 minutes. I was the Jack man![]()
Also, ditch the scissor jack and get a low profile floor jackRegarding helping someone change a flat, saw a guy changing a tire in the parking lot of a restaurant I was heading into. He looked like he was okay so I didn't say anything right away. I go inside but kept an eye on him. Some time later he's still at it so I go out to ask if he needs any help. I see then that he has some crappy manufacturer lug wrench and he can't get the lugs off. Got my nice lug wrench out and had him on his way in no time. Do yourself a favor and get a nice lug wrench and hope you never need it but if you do you'll be glad you have it. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004SEXO3E/
If you're going to buy one.... the cross is the way to goRegarding helping someone change a flat, saw a guy changing a tire in the parking lot of a restaurant I was heading into. Wow, 12 people have never changed a tire? I can see younger folks calling AAA, to have one changed. But, would’ve thought our age cohort it would’ve been almost none.
That’s one thing I wish I was better at- car repairs. I feel like I get ripped off every time I have to take my car to a mechanic.
And the few times I’ve been driving and had a car take a dump on me, I get out and pop the hood, like I’m expecting to find a big switch turned to “OFF” that I can flip back to “ON” and keep driving.
huh? I don't think that's true.... All 3 of my cars have donuts in themwith most cars no longer having spare tires.. how are you enterprising fellas changing tires on the side of the road?
Brutal honesty: While I have changed tires before ... these days, I'd just as soon have my vehicle towed to our regular shop and fixed there. Especially with the sketchy "jacks" cars come with these days.Wow, 12 people have never changed a tire? I can see younger folks calling AAA, to have one changed. Nope, definitely not. You can get way more torque on the extension lug wrench than those cross ones, which is extremely helpful when the dummy at the tire shop uses the impact gun and gets the lugs way too tight. and the extension comes with the same 4 sizes for "universal" use.If you're going to buy one.... the cross is the way to goRegarding helping someone change a flat, saw a guy changing a tire in the parking lot of a restaurant I was heading into. EVs and Hybrids mostly it seems. Batteries where the spare would normally be. Wife's new one does not have a spare...has an "inflation kit" that hopefully we'll never need. If that doesn't work it'll be a "pull the tire and run to the tire store and back situation" possibly.with most cars no longer having spare tires.. how are you enterprising fellas changing tires on the side of the road?
You're still a manly man to me!We're all manly men here, of course we have.![]()
