Many times. Low profile tires don’t like potholes.

I would think most middle aged dudes have performed multiple car repairs/maintenance, as auto work was a lot easier in our formative years. At least know how to change the oil and a flat.

Not sure if those skills are being passed on to younger generations.

I had some crappy cars running some crappy used tires in my 20's. I have changed my fair share of flats.

Tires today are expensive, but they are so much better than tires even 30 years ago. I have had tires that i could not get 20,000 miles out of when i was in highschool but now there are people getting over 80k miles on certain tires.

Several times! Last one was about six or seven years ago. I timed myself…. under 20 minutes.

I also made my boys “practice” before they got their license.
Back in the day, several. I haven't had a flat in at least a decade. After posting that, I am sure I'll be changing 3 flats in the next month.

I trained each of my kids (2G, 1B) how to do this when they got their licenses. Helps them be prepared when it happens for real. Kinda how I viewed swim lessons as drown-proofing. I wasn't actually thinking any of them were heading to the olympics or anything. Just prepping them.

When I was 16-22 years of age I drove junk cars so I learned early how to deal with flat tires and other basics.

When my daughters started to drive I showed them and made them change a tire, and how to jump start a car. They were complaining that their hands would get dirty or break a nail. Said it is a easy skill to learn that you might need one day.

While I know how to do it, shockingly I’ve never had to do it myself. I’ve just had insanely good luck. I think there was one time where a new vehicle that I purchased somehow got a flat tire within like a week of me getting it. I wasn’t in a hurry the day it happened so I utilized the roadside assistance package that came with the purchase. I’m glad I did that, because they replaced the tire with a brand new full size tire. Had I did it myself, I would have been driving around on one of those small donuts until I took the car to the dealership.

I have changed a timing belt/water pump/oil pump/ball joint on the side of the road.
This is awesome. Definitely far beyond anything that I’m capable of. Do you watch Roadkill at all? Soo much of that series is them fixing their cars on the sides of roads. Lol.

Well, you just jinxed yourself.

I think I've seen it before. I'm more of a Vice Grip Garage guy. I do all my own maintenance on four cars and I don't have a driveway or garage so everything I do has to be on the side of the road. I'm pretty sure that's not normal.

Here I was imagining you out in the blistering sun with cars whizzing by at a 100mph.

I've changed multiple tires for myself and others. It can require lots of force to loosen lug nuts, so a few times I had to step on the wrench. There is some danger in jacking the car up, especially on an uneven surface. Always use the parking brake.

I've also plugged tire holes several times back in the day over 15 years ago. Apparently, it's slightly unsafe unless a patch is applied to the inside of the tire. Newer cars tell you in advance if a tire is low which can avoid damaging a tire and even prevent a blowout.

We're all manly men here, of course we have. More interesting question would be have you ever stopped to help a stranger change a tire?
I have a story here. About a decade ago I hit a pothole and blew out a tire.

Was in town and gas station was close by so got lucky there. It was night, pretty cold out, was raining, and I was coming home from flag football game was in shorts and T-shirt and flip flops so unlucky there.

I had no clue about this car’s jack. Pulled this thing out and it is about the size of a big candy bar - did have a full sized spare though. Read through the manual and is straight forward enough but the jack has to line up perfectly on some grooves which was going to be an PITA. I was looking where this needed to happen, muttering a bit.

Getting the little piece of **** all lined up and at this point I’m pretty soaked. This dude comes up to me and asks if I need a hand, said he managed a tire shop, this and that.

He seems like he knows what’s up so I say sure! I take like 30 seconds to grab a sweatshirt and pants out of my trunk dry off a bit, come back around to join my new friend.

He’s already starting to lift the car. Amazing! This guy is getting a six pack from the store from me for being such a good dude.

I‘m getting the spare moved around and look and something looks off. I see this trim piece on my door near the wheel well sort of bow a bit and sort of move and my stomach drops. The dude just threw the Jack under my car and started lifting and it wasn't in the little grooves. I crap my pants and tell him stop.

He then looks at me and says “What kind of car is this?” like it’s the cars fault 😂😂😂

I realized I have made a terrible, terrible mistake.

Jammed the spare under the car and lower it, the guy is no longer my best friend. Keeps trying to help (he did think of the spare under the car which was a good idea) but now I have to tell him to kindly **** off while I‘m thinking he just wrecked my car.

Get it all sorted and ended up getting my tire replaced and my alignment done for free, learned the city has some pothole damage claim and they actually paid me back. Didn’t try and claim the 900 or bucks in damage that I did to the trim.

Lessoned learned that day! Always check out the jack on your car in the daylight so you know how to use it 😀

Yes quite a few times, I swear my wife would get a flat tire like once a month when we first started dating

It’s been awhile though, I had a flat like a year ago and instead of changing it I just drove it to the closest tire place (was like 1/2 mile away). Well it was flatter than I thought and the rim basically ripped right through it so I ended up needing a new tire

I haven't. I'm younger than a bunch here and I think the oldest car I've driven is a 2000 model year, I don't know if tire technology is that much better or I've just been lucky. The only flat I can remember even having was on a rental and they just swapped it out.

If I needed too though? No, I would call CAA

yes. my issue has been that i can store a full size spare, but have staggered wheels..... so a 50/50 shot at having the correct size if something happens.

Edit: also do not want to jinx it as i haven't had to change one in a while.

Two months ago I changed a tire on a brand new Rogue SUV. The lady said she hit a curb and was on her way to visit her husband in the ER. He had 2 days of fever, bad headache, so he took an Uber to get a CT scan. She came later to the ER with a 3 year old in the back seat. It was 10pm, Sunday. Couldn't find the jack. After 10 minutes, I googled a video, voila. In the meantime, she called roadside assistance but was told it would take 1 to 2 hours. Yes, finding the right place on the car to engage the jack is crucial. It was at the entrance road to a hospital, eventually hospital security came and lent a hand. Those younger dudes hadn't been trained in the nuances of changing a tire, like this older dude.

I had changed the tire on two previous cars a Volvo and an Isuzu and both had a much easer way to do it than this car, an Audi.

Was not loving the precise German engineering on that

Going to go change one now. My daughter curbed my rim and destroyed the tire on my truck last night. She was borrowing it for one day while her car was in the shop.

I'm in this camp. I remember when my wife and I were first dating we got one while at dinner. We actually noticed it while looking out the window out at the car. So rather than get dirty and sweaty, we called AAA (she had it) to come out while we dined.

Too many. I’ve helped a few people on the side of the road too.

As long as I can get the lug it off I can get er done in 10 minutes or less.

Wow, 12 people have never changed a tire? I can see younger folks calling AAA, to have one changed. But, would’ve thought our age cohort it would’ve been almost none.

That’s one thing I wish I was better at- car repairs. I feel like I get ripped off every time I have to take my car to a mechanic.

And the few times I’ve been driving and had a car take a dump on me, I get out and pop the hood, like I’m expecting to find a big switch turned to “OFF” that I can flip back to “ON” and keep driving.

I learned as soon as I had my first incident, and it was a full on blowout. The tire blew and as I was pulling over, I could actually see the tire keep on rolling down the freeway.

Was not impressed with my inability to change the tire at the time, but I was impressed with my ability to maintain control of the car going 80 on a rim.

You’re welcome.

Of course.

In high school there were 3 of us always cruising in my friends OG tiny civic. We pretended we were a pit crew everytime something went wrong. we got a round of applause in a 7/11 parking lot when we changed the tire in under 3 minutes. I was the Jack man 😂😂

Changed quite a few over the years. In my younger days I refused/couldn't spend money on new tires so I would buy cheap half dry rotted used tires with good tread from these sketchy tire shops we had in Houston. Which predictably led to more changes.

PSA - As your vehicles age, inspect the lug nuts. Many manufacturers these days are using crappy 2 piece lug nuts. They're basically a regular nut with a thin cap over it to make it look nice. The problem is they corrode and swell to the point you won't be able to get the lug wrench over them or if you force the wrench on the first nut will get stuck. This can be easily prevented by proactively replacing your lug nuts with solid lug nuts. If you do have the problem you can buy special lug wrenches that are 1/2 size step ups, but you likely won't have one of those when you need it. Ask me how I know.

 Taught my oldest sons too.
Car, mini van, SUV, bike, but the most fun was breaking track on a Bradley back in the day (doesn’t qualify as a flat but similar idea)

You’re Hugh!

Regarding helping someone change a flat, saw a guy changing a tire in the parking lot of a restaurant I was heading into. He looked like he was okay so I didn't say anything right away. I go inside but kept an eye on him. Some time later he's still at it so I go out to ask if he needs any help. I see then that he has some crappy manufacturer lug wrench and he can't get the lugs off. Got my nice lug wrench out and had him on his way in no time. Do yourself a favor and get a nice lug wrench and hope you never need it but if you do you'll be glad you have it. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004SEXO3E/

I've changed many a tire. The problem now is new cars don't have storage for a full size spare and my 2 current vehicles don't even have a doughnut spare, just a thing that supposed to pump up the flat and seal it.

Also, ditch the scissor jack and get a low profile floor jack

On the last part- I always see people who have broken down on the side of the road and the first thing they do is break out the jumper cables. I wonder why they think that’s going to work on a car that has power.

Brutal honesty: While I have changed tires before ... these days, I'd just as soon have my vehicle towed to our regular shop and fixed there. Especially with the sketchy "jacks" cars come with these days.

I have not had to deal with a flat tire in extemis in over 20 years. Don't do a lot of middle-of-nowhere driving these days.

Nope, definitely not. You can get way more torque on the extension lug wrench than those cross ones, which is extremely helpful when the dummy at the tire shop uses the impact gun and gets the lugs way too tight. and the extension comes with the same 4 sizes for "universal" use.

EVs and Hybrids mostly it seems. Batteries where the spare would normally be. Wife's new one does not have a spare...has an "inflation kit" that hopefully we'll never need. If that doesn't work it'll be a "pull the tire and run to the tire store and back situation" possibly.

When I had a BMW, they had run flats so no need to change the tire, just go to the dealership when the TPMS alerts you.
