I had to bump this thread for reference. Thanks for starting it.

A young employee (early 20s) who really needs to be at work today just called out because he has a flat tire and won't be coming in at all today in order to get it fixed. He claims he doesn't know how to change a tire and his program manager is going to bat for him that it's something young kids don't know how to do.
I'd have his walking papers in hand and I better hear an incredible reason why he couldn't get in and out of a tire center in about an hour or two.
First of all you simply read the numbers on the tire and call the tire shops to see who has one of them readily available

I could buy that someone could not make it in on time, maybe had to eat up their entire morning but by Noon-1:00 gimme a break you gotta call off for an entire day and claim ignorance?
I don't need anyone like that on my staff or office, get rid of them immediately, you're doing them a favor.

Just got back from the Smokies for a couple weeks, you can see I'm a lot more relaxed
I think we might fire him actually. He called back to let us know he couldn't get an appointment for a new tire today and its scheduled for tomorrow, so don't expect him tomorrow either. We pretty much told him to be in tomorrow "or else"... so we'll see what happens.

I did get called sexist at one point today for making a comment that I expected a guy to figure this out better. Had it been a younger lady, I would have been more sympathetic.
What would you say he DOES there, where you work?
He's in training to be full motion video screener. He's in the evaluation stage and not good enough to pull this.
I'm not even sure what that is...full motion video screener...send him to TSA, I think that machine that spins around folks as they lift their arms for security would qualify as full motion ..they haven't caught nothing in the history of TSA

The last one I changed was in 2020. But about 15 years ago my daughter had a flat right outside my work. I was hosting several vendors doing their orals before business leaders for an RFP that I was leading. My daughter, who was 7 months pregnant, called me and I went out to change the tire. It was a nice humid morning in Austin. I returned to the meeting with a very sweaty shirt (we sere still wearing suits and ties back then).

I've changed tons of tires. Last month my daughter absolutely shredded her tire. Dad to the rescue. It's actually a simple process to do. Common sense stuff. The only thing u can really mess up is to try to loosen lug nuts with car jacked up. Please loosen while car is on the ground. Ha ha

Driving about two months ago I came up behind a car doing ~15 mph with a horribly wobbling back tire. Looked like it might fall off any moment. I managed to flag down the teenage driver and get her to pull over at the next possible spot.

She had TWO lugnuts out of five on her wheel. She was beyond frantic, had no idea why her car was shaking, she was late for an interview down the road, and all she could tell me was that her boyfriend had "fixed her tire" that morning and sent her on her way.

I figured I'd steal two lugnuts off her other wheels to give her 4, and send her to an auto parts store nearby. I assessed the other wheels and found one tire with 4, another with 4, and the last one only had 3. And the two on the bad tire were so spalled out I couldn't tighten them down and could barely get them off, so I had 11 working lugnuts out of 20. Didn't even have enough to rearrange and put 3 on every tire to let her limp down the road to the store.

Ended up giving her a ride to her interview, then went to the auto parts store myself and bought ten new ones and went back and put 5 on every tire for her. Meanwhile she called an aunt to come give her a ride back from the interview to her car.

I couldn't help but also mention to her before I left: "You should seriously question your boyfriend's love for you, if he let you drive away like this".

Update? Did he make it in? How did the discussion with him go?

LOL, so he goes to his tire appointment and the mechanic tells him his axel is all messed up too and he needs to get it repaired. They would have to order the part and fix it Wednesday. So he tried to get approved to be out until Thursday. We told him no and to figure it out. He showed up to work this morning (Borrowed someone's car) but has regressed in his training and might still get canned. Still waiting to see if he can knock the rust off and recover. I want to fire him, but its ultimately his future boss' call on that.

This guy is going to be hell to work with. There will always be an excuse why the work didn't get done, and when he does get canned, I'd expect a lawsuit.

This!
Judge Chamberlain Haller: Let me get this straight - you could figure out how to sue your employer because they fired you for not doing your job but you couldn't figure out how to get to that job when your car was in the shop?

Know Nothing Kid: Well, YEAH!

Judge: Case dismissed.

Most likely ends up with a settlement before going to court. Guy gets 3-months severance, a neutral review, and moves on to grifting the next schmuck.

Two instances stand out.
Had a flat while heading to vacation spot in the mountains. Nice four lane road and pulled over with plenty of space. Lug wrench was not steel but some kind of composite material. Got off first lug nut fine, but while trying to get the second off lug wrench snapped in to and struck me in the leg. Tried to flag someone down to help with no luck. Put my wife and daughter out to flag someone down and had two cars stop to help. Not sure they were expecting to see me, but they did change the tire while I limped around.
Had a flat one time on a bridge at night. Rear passenger tire, so I could get to it. Luckily it was four lanes. Jacked the car up as other cars whizzed by at 55 mph. Got off several lug nuts and car blew off of jack from car going by. Had to jack up again to finish changing tire. Probably was crazy to change it there, but I had a good buzz going and did not want cops to show up. It did kill my buzz though.
