What's the deal with Bulger? (1 Viewer)

I have not been able to see any StL games this year yet (no DTV and live in Detroit), but I'm getting really fed up with Marc Bulger. For those that see it every weekend, what's the deal? Is the O-Line that bad? Is he hurt? Bad playing calling??

their offense looked really conservative today, perhaps to counteract the problems the OL had pass-blocking last week. i wonder if today they just didn't stretch the field enough to open up the passing game. it also seemed predictable when they were going to run or pass.

In addition to Rams wanting to feature SJax, Bulgers ribs are hurting - conservative plays called to avoid hits in pocket. He didn't get hit much, but his throwing was really off - two really bad passes in redzone cost Rams (and us Bulger owners) big.

Bulger, SJAX, and company marching downfield only to have Wilkins shank two easy FG's didn't do much to inspire confidence either...

I agree that conservative play calling didn't help. They were also terrible in the redzone after putting together a few decent drives. Bulger did actually have some time to throw and I think he was only sacked once in this game, but he's probably scared back there after the hits he's been taking this year, plus the bruised ribs...anyone selling? I just have lost a lot of faith in the St. Louis offense after watching them in all 3 games this year. Although again playcalling hasn't been great either.

The earlier posters have pretty much covered it, but I think there's too much emphasis on the ribs injury - - Bulger has played through far worse. The real problem (in addition to the Rams' steadfast, now-nearing-incomprehensible refusal to draft or acquire serious help on the offensive line) is Linehan's playcalling. It's gone from awful to mindblowingly terrible. I couldn't believe it today.

And yeah, those weird misses by Wilkins were momentum killers, too.

I might get some some stange looks for this but IMO Bulger has always been overrated. He has had good years in the past but he is not a QB that can win you game. He is however a QB that can lose you games with his INT's.

I don't think Bulger is overrated at all. Sure, he doesn't have the kind of arm that can toss it 60 yards but he can make any throw with ease from 45 yards and under. He only had 8 INTs last season - that is impressive, considering he also put up 4300+ yards.

For some reason Linehan has decided quick screens to 180lb WRs is a better option than them going downfield and dumping it off to the 230lb monster he has in the backfield.

I can't even watch them anymore. He might have a few good games if they are playing catch-up but all in all, I'd see what else is available.

Living near St. Louis I have to watch the Lambs each week. Bulger doesn't have much time to throw and may be gunshy after being dropped so much. The O line is banged up and can't protect.

One glaring thing I've noticed this year with them is they have completely abandoned throwing the short pass to SJax. Now all those plays are going to Leonard the rookie. They gave it to Jax 30 times but he is very effective when catching the quick dump off pass. It doesn't get any better for the Rams in the schedule this week. They are in for a long season.

Question for the St Loo homers: Was someone else on the O-line injured this week?

Some people will call me crazy but St Louis worries me as a Cowboy fan. They can pass the ball well and run between the tackles. St Louis could easily win a shoout out type of scenario.

I hate when the fans and media start giving wins before they are earned. Many people are talking about a battle of un defeated teams Dallas and NE in Week 6. If it happens great.....just be sure to look after your business first. Hope Wade keeps them focused.

I think LG Setterstrom left in the 3rd quater, but not sure the extent of it yet. I wouldn't sweat the Rams at all. They can run the ball but do NOT pass the ball well. Ware and Spencer will have a field day. Cowboys 31Rams 17

Fixed. One FG and a defensive TD. Bulger will throw 4 picks and have under 200 yards passing again.

I had 13 at first...but changed it. Either way BLOWOUT

I posted this in the other Bulger thread (which was less read at the time)

I am very concerned about Bulger's going forward production for 2007. Prior to last year, he was not overly durable.

In a 12 team league in which you can start a 2nd QB at Super Flex, I was just offered Bulger (who was a 2nd round draft choice) for Derek Anderson (who I claimed of WW) and DeShaun Foster. Even though this would be a classic "Buy Low (Bulger)/Sell High (Foster)" opportunity I think that I will pass on the deal unless I get something else of value thrown in (like the NE Def). Foster is my RB4 or RB5 (depending upon where one ranks KJones). 2 weeks ago I had talked about this type of deal involving Lamont Jordan and Garrard from me in exchange for Bulger and the other owner wanted to wait for Week 2 to see Jordan's results. Following Week 2 I said Jordan was no longer available for Bulger.

I offer the above not to share minutia of trade talks within my league, but simply to illustrate the prevailing trading level of the stock in one Marc Bulger.

can't confirm it, but i heard report that stetterstrom tore his ACL...

the team did overcome injuries to OL last season... but players that came in & did a good job last year have now been injured, too... steussie was injured & released, incognito has started season on sideline with high ankle sprain & now stetterstrom...

if you are having OL problems, it would make sense to involve the TE (when not keeping him in as blocker) & slot WR for high percentage throws, but STL hasn't done a good job of using their high priced new offensive weapons so far...

linehan doesn't call the plays, but he still needs to take responsibility if the team is failing to make good adjustments in-game...

No Martz & no Pace. Martz wasn't there last year but his effects were still lingering. Now a year removed and without Pace, the offense doesn't seem to know what to do.

Losing a HOF left tackle will do that to an offense. Especially considering the line was spotty at best B4 he got hurt.
That's what is really baffling about yesterday. The Line played pretty well. Some would say really well. They only allowed one sack and SJax had 100+ yards rushing. He's been banged around a ton so far. Maybe he's getting happy feet in the form of happy arm and making ill advised passes before he get crushed. I don't know. With a solid running game the WR's should be open. It's not like he's throwing to DJax and Ashley Lelie. We're talking about Bruce and Holt. Two guys that may very well wind up in the HOF when it's all said and done. Plus Bennett and McMichael? Why aren't there more screens to scare the D off the QB? SJax is a great pass catcher. Screen, screen, screen....

Bruce got his head hit in the first half and dissappeared for the rest of the game. There also was some rain late in the 2nd/early in the 3rd.

None of this explains the dismal offense that was on display tho.

(KFFL) St. Louis Rams QB Marc Bulger (ribs) has two broken ribs, according to head coach Scott Linehan. Linehan said Bulger will play Week 4. Mon Sep 24 7:58:00 p.m. ET 2007
things just keep getting worse for the Rams...

Losing Orlando Pace destabilized the line. I read in the St. Louis press last week that not only did Bulger get sacked a half-dozen times in week 2, he also got hit on another 15 or so passes - essentially, he's getting contacted by defenders every other time he drops back. Nobody looks good at QB under such horrid conditions...
