When do we go in and wipe out ISIS? (1 Viewer)

You were so much better when you were commenting on the moon and not getting all bent out of shape about another internet guy's view of the world.

Go watch crappy sports with cappy or something. He's fat like me, probably jolly as all get out in person. In the meantime, I've got this "We need to kill the evil guys" thing covered, don't sweat it.
I'm not bent out of shape, I'm mocking you. Big difference.I'm just finding it hard to believe you think our troops are "DYING" to get into combat. It shows how truly disconnected you are.

Yeah I don't know much but that sure was a stupid comment.

You got me.

I could most definitely use the boot camp. But I'm too old and fat to help out much over there. As a younger man, I bet I could have done some damage.
You could be a meat shield for one of the good soldiers.DO MORE. THAT IS THE ONLY OPTION.
You're on board with the mini cheeseburger parachutes, aren't you.
I have no idea what "solution" I prefer. Ideally, there would be a big ISIS meetup somewhere and we could just gas or burn them all but I don't that'll happen.Like you, and probably 99% of this board, I have no idea what the situation is like over there, so ranting like an iTough guy or using up all the internets bandwidth like Tim and his merry band of idiots is pointless.
Turns out they're not planning a big Burning Man event on a giant red X in the desert in Syria. I agree with you, seems like a great solution if it's available. But I don't think it is.

Come on, try at least. It's not an easy exercise. And we don't know crap about crap. I get all that.

But you've got two choices: either withdraw and hope for the best, or get dirty. Which makes more sense to you?

Sorry, three choices. Burgerchutes always a low cost option.
I'd say targeted raids by a coalition. Bomb specific targets. Cut off their money. There isn't a quick fix.Even if you killed all the ones from Syria and Iraq today, there could be an attack tomorrow by their supporters that are all around the world already. Then what? Kill more people in Syria? Bomb some innocents?

Terrorism is here to stay whether it is by ISIS, another group or random nutjobs.

I dunno, deep down I'm hopeful that if you kill enough bad guys, you eventually run out of bad guys to kill. It's not all like boba fett watching his dad get decapitated and instantly decides to become evil and wear the boba fett suit.

Otis, I think you're a good guy, and I get your emotion about this. I think Ditka Butkis is a good guy, and RBM, and the rest of you who are frustrated. I'm frustrated too. And it's not that I don't have the stomach for dropping a nuke or wasting a city. If I thought it would solve the terrorist problem once and for all, I'd do it.

But these are complicated problems and there's no simple solution. We cannot destroy ISIS in the same way we could destroy Nazi Germany or Japan, because we're dealing with a toxic ideology. If we make martyrs out of them, the ideology will only grow. Israel has been dealing with this problem for decades. Don't you think that if they could exterminate Hamas and Hezbollah, they would by now? It's not like they don't know where they are. They know exactly where they are. But if they kill them all, it will only make things worse. That is the hell of terrorism.

The only way to fight this is an extension of what Obama is doing. It's slow, it's frustrating, it will take decades, you won't hear much about the successes, only the failures. And there will be more terrorist attacks. But there's really not much else we can do.

Otis on iFire
(It's been a while since I've had a run like this. Tearing it up. Don't tell cappy or DD, dudes may lose their minds)
Most people would have just stopped posting after I annihilated you earlier. But again, you're a big lumbering type who doesn't know when to quit.

Good show, I sent this to some military buddies of mine who had a good laugh at you. You're famous in military circles now Otis!

Do you think we can stay the course and do exactly as we've been doing? Will that work?

If not, is the Obama approach the right one in your view? Sounds like that's the case.

If so, is it stepped up version of the Obama approach that will work? Or a less aggressive version? Or just the same, "we're doing great as is"?

Otis, a Syrian, a Twinkie, and a plate of Bacon enter a cage. What remains after 15 minutes?
So easy.

I grab the twinkie and jam it in my mouth. One bite. Even if he's quick enough to get to the bacon, a muslim dude from Syria wants no part of that bacon. It's a direct trip to hell. So I casually stroll over towards the bacon, probably humming America the Beautiful the whole way, and very slowly and meticulously enjoy the bacon in small bites. I lick my fingers at the end and look over at the terrorist SORRY I MEAN SYRIAN like "oh, you're still here?"

Really? You want to nuke a whole country based on a few hundred killed. You don't think they'd be a little angry and out for revenge after you incinerate their entire friends/family/country?

It's going to be some variation of what we're doing now. I don't want ground troops, and I don't want to annihilate any cities.

As to whether or not what Obama is doing is exactly right, I'm not sure, because there's some dispute over exactly how much we're aiding the Kurds, and I don't know whether it's a good idea to keep trying to overthrow Assad. Hillary and Rubio are both proposing enforcing a no fly zone over Syria; I don't know if that's a good idea either. There's lots a moving parts; it's a complicated situation. Also things are very fluid and they could change quickly. I wish I could give you a better answer but there isn't any quick ones. As to whether we're "doing great", that's not something we can tell right now. Historians believe that Harry Truman won the Cold War in 1948, but it took both sides around 40 years to realize it. So who knows?

I don't think I ever seriously proposed nuking all of Syria off the map.

If that's what you're suggesting, it's not a terrible idea, but I suspect we can do better.

You're right, there are. They are all 19-year-old Marines who just got out of school and they want to kill something. They've never deployed, been shot at, mortared, rocketed, IED'd r anything else.American leadership and the responsible tax payers have a duty to protect these people, because if it is necessary, they will protect us. You picking up what I'm laying down?

Dumb question I'm sure, but with these bomb threats tonight -- how on earth would anybody get a bomb on a plane leaving someplace in America in 2015? The security measures seem (thankfully) really great.

I've never felt safer on a plane than I have this year, for whatever reason.

Just did a little Googling and number crunching.

Estimates have the number of ISIS members at up to 200,000 members.

The population of Syria is 23 million people.

The population of Iraq is 33 million people.

This means that 1 out of 280 people in Syria and Iraq are ISIS.

I don't know what the answer is, but it would seem that killing 279 innocents to get 1 member of ISIS may not be the most ethical thing to do.
Now add in the thousands that will become Daesh Bags in the near and distant future i bet that number grows...when i see pictures and videos of gangs of 6 to 12 yo kids kicking a human head around like a soccer ball i know at that point they gotta go

Great question. I've wondered this too, though I hate to jinx it.

Outside of an inside job it would be pretty tough, and our airport security isn't nearly as tough as in Germany or the UK.

Apparently one of the bomb threats was a woman who thought she saw someone who looked Middle Eastern watching the plane with binoculars.

Planes ARE safe. There's a lot of fear going on right now, just as there was a year ago with Ebola. (Remember how a student who had traveled to east Africa, thousands of miles away from the virus, was kicked out of a Texas school? Remember how certain people here wanted us to ban all travel from the countries that had the virus?)

i got 4oz. of toothpaste on a plane a couple weeks ago.

The solution is ending the rift between the Sunni and Shia Muslims. Easier said than done.
I think that might even make it worse, but those dogs and cats will likely never get along. That argument goes back 14 centuries.

Indonesia is the most populous Muslim nation and they probably have the least issues with Islamists. I think the eastern and Hindu influences in the Islam practiced makes a difference, and their existence as an island nation also insulates them from powerful external forces that are easily spread in the ME and Central Asia. The governments willingness to not only tolerate but recognize other faiths is also helpful.

I would actually argue that, in terms of fighting terrorism (and ESPECIALLY in terms of fighting ISIS), that rift has worked to our benefit.
How, exactly, do you come to that conclusion?
Iran is opposed to iSIS, mainly because ISIS is made up of Sunnis and Iran is made up of Shias. The Shiite government in Baghdad is also opposed to ISIS, mainly for the same reason. If all extremist Muslims were either only Sunni or only Shia, it seems to me that the threat to us would be much greater. You know the old saying, the enemy or our enemy...

How would it make it worse? Protestant and Catholic Christians eventually worked "things" out, for lack of a better term. Impossible in this case?

Well because a united Islam might not be the best thing for the West. The whole Huntington theory, clash of civilizations and the like.

Also Protestants and Catholics still have their issues, and they were killing each other over them in my lifetime. Fortunately religion is dying almost everywhere in Europe, and slowly dying in America. Less religion the better. Need to spread that love to Qatar and Kuwait next. Give up on God people!

If stats are to be believed, the suicide rate for our soldiers and vets of the most recent wars is something like 22 per day. That saddens me greatly. Maybe tap the brakes a little on deploying another generation of our young to war until we figure out how to treat them upon return and get that suicide rate way way down.

Sunnis hit the World Trade Center with airliners. Shias bombed the Khobar towers. Sayin'.

This is what I have thought would be the next way to take out a plane. Open a door or window. Same result as a bomb.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/travelnews/travel-truths/10306496/What-happens-if-you-open-the-plane-door-during-a-flight.html
Did you read that article? It's impossible.
It's impossible if you are just a passenger, but is easily achievable in other ways. Anyone who does maintenance could defect the door. Or a small object or explosive placed inside the door could also dislodge it. I'm not saying it's easy, but it's something I haven't heard mentioned I until the other day when I heard a drunk idiot try to do it. I understand it's engineered to be dummy proof but an idea none the less.

Maybe. Sure, I understand that Protestant and Catholic Christians have killed each other in our lifetimes. It seems, to me, that those sects have negotiated a solution sans violence. Can Islam do the same?

So what is the solution? I've read the "nuke it from orbit" option (ridiculous), and the "let them sort it out" option. Where/how does it end?

People will fight over religion, territory, water, beads, whatever. It never ends as long as we are only using a small portion of our brains.

People will fight over religion, territory, water, beads, whatever. It never ends as long as we are only using a small portion of our brains.
Cannot argue with that. Sad...

If stats are to be believed, the suicide rate for our soldiers and vets of the most recent wars is something like 22 per day. That saddens me greatly. Maybe tap the brakes a little on deploying another generation of our young to war until we figure out how to treat them upon return and get that suicide rate way way down.
The age breakdown puts most of those as Vietnam vets.

So? Doesn't change the point he was trying to make. Whether it is one per day (probably the number you found on a google search), or 22, it is too many.
