When do you drop the Betts handcuff...? (1 Viewer)

Personally, I'm not a big proponent of handcuffing. But obviously during the pre-season it made sense to hedge your bets (no pun intended) if you drafted Portis because of the general nature of the information that as coming out of Redskins training camp.

While I know it's only Week 1, it does not appear that Portis is any more susceptable to injury or down time than any other RB. Perhaps the tendinitis will linger, but if anything - you would think that Portis' load will increase over the weeks. So as it stands, it would almost seem that Betts would have the same value as a Leon Washington type now (maybe even less).

I've got Betts, but I'm leaning toward keeping him one more week and then dropping him after Week 2. Any other thoughts/opinions on this topic?

Doesnt Portis have sore ribs after last weeks game? I would hang onto Betts for a few more weeks.

ETA: I am a handcuffer, so I would probably keep him the whole year.

Depends how many roster spots you have....I think he's worth hanging on to. He was a very solid player down the stretch for many playoff teams.

Not only that, but if Betts continues to get 15 touches or more, even when Portis is at his best, I think he's worth rostering in almost every league....

Especially if it is a dynasty he is worth holding on to. If portis is out, Betts becomes a very nice option and personally, I don't have enough confidence that Portis can go an entire season without a little injury vacation.

If you drop him, I think that another team would probably scoop him right up and don't like to see the eyes of other owners light up at one of my 'drops'. Think about it too. How would you feel if you ended up getting beat by Betts later this season?

There aren't many backups who, if their starter got injured, could step in and get top 10 numbers right away. There are fewer still who also get points every week. Those are the backups you want. I don't know how many bench spots you get, but what else would you possibly want to have on your bench besides a guy like that?

Me neither. I play in three leagues. Have Portis on all three teams. Didn't get Betts in any of them. He went in the 7th, 7th, and 8th round in the drafts, and I wasn't prepared to spend that kind of pick on him. (Heck, at that point, I was picking QB's.)That said, those who spent that kind of pick on Betts really have no choice, do they? They have to wait it out and hope (not unreasonably, given history) that Portis has to sit a week or three at some point.

I would only drop the handcuff when Portis starts getting most of the carries. Last week they both had 17 with Portis having better #s. This week could be Betts based on the carries split. Definitely a wait and see scenario IMO.

Who says Betts is Portis's handcuff. Normally, when two RBs get 17 carries each, there's a way to describe that sort of relationship, and it's not "Starter/Backup"... it's RBBC.

Edit: Actually, Betts had 18 touches to Portis's 17, which means you're pretty eager to drop the guy who is currently getting the majority of the touches. Portis might have done more with his touches last week, but we saw last season that if you give Betts enough touches, he's going to make something happen. Who's to say that Betts won't hold serious fantasy value THIS SEASON even if Portis stays 100% healthy? If both backs are getting 15-18 touches a week, I'd have no problem using either as a flex starter.

Betts <> handcuff.

Viable RB4 incase of serious emergencies ahead of him.

I have no qualms, if I lose RB1 or RB2 and must play a bench RB to put Betts in there, even if I am already starting Portis.

In three weeks, if Portis has 30 touches to Betts' 5, he might see the WW. But, I'd probably keep him and demote him to RB5.

:bs: I think Betts played his way into regular touches last year.

Unless you have extremely limited benches, there is no reason to drop Betts ever (barring an injury to him).

1. Betts is currently getting significant touches, even with Portis healthy.

2. Portis may be relatively healthy now, but has a history of getting dinged.

3. Betts showed last year that he can put up solid RB2/borderline RB1 numbers if he becomes the featured back.

You can never have too much depth at RB.

Who else would you get. I mean if your Fa market is full of V. Morencys' whats the point of dropping Betts. But if your talented in depth and need another position Id go for it.

You have to keep him. He is a top 10 RB FF wise if Portis gets hurt. And IMO will be a better FF RB if that happened.. So if and when CP gets hurt you go from a top 10 RB to nothing while letting a league mate get a top 10 RB. The latter being the key...

When Portis finishes a season without an injury.

I don't own Portis, have Betts rostered and can't wait to plug him in the lineup when Portis goes down...yet again.

I think by the time we hit mid-season, people will talking about starting Portis + Betts as your two RBs. There are some very powerful coaching forces in Washington right now working their magic towards fantasy RBs. Supposedly last week we saw a tough Miami D, yet Washington was willing to run the ball down their throats and make a pretty damn productive RB duo there.

Obviously Portis is the more talented of the two and should put up more points week in and week out, but I think Betts makes a decent RB#2 start during weaker matchups as well. Just look at what Washington did at the end of last season, the forcefeed their RB the rock. Many points to be had on that offense.
