When is Osi Umenyiora Coming Back? (1 Viewer)

I am getting midly irritated about the lack of information on Osi's injury. Ever since he got injured, the Giants have never officially said he'd be out xx weeks. But based on the rumors we could just see it coming and I was not holding my breath for a quick return. I don't think we have any more information today than 4 weeks ago. If they knew 4 weeks ago that he'd be out for several weeks, why did they not just say it? And what about now? Why is it so hard to get their best guess on when he's coming back?

I understand teams can make a guess and miss. For example, S Alexander has been out for longer than expected. I am not asking for teams to be perfect in their estimate of when an injured player is coming back, but I don't particularly like teams just giving a one-week advance notice "he's in" or "he's out". Most of the time they say "out for 3-5 weeks" or "out 6-8 weeks", etc.

What is going on with Osi? What did the Giants handle it this way?

There has been recent speculation that Umenyiora has a torn hip flexor muscle. If so, that's a significant injury and the Giants have probably kept him in limbo while they wait to see how likely it is that they'll make the playoffs. Otherwise, it's possible they may have IRed him already given the state of their DE corps (Tuck on IR, Strahan out). It'd be nice to hear specific return to play estimates but teams aren't under any obligation to do so. It's much easier to declare a guy out and not give specifics when the injury doesn't require surgery. We've seen similar vague responses out of the Giants about Strahan, Tuck, Short, Emmons, and Wilson. John Abraham, Shawn Springs, Bob Sanders on other teams...the list goes on.

As long as teams can get away with labeling guys "questionable" when they know they'll be out long term we'll have to project based on the information we had. It doesn't serve their interests to be any more specific. While fans would like to know and it's probably not a huge competitive advantage for the opposition to know ahead of time in many cases, there isn't much to be gained from letting anyone know the true extent of injuries either.

In Osi's case, until that speculation that there may be a torn muscle, all we heard was out indefinitely.

Nothing new on the horizon. This from today's newsrags.

Newark Star-Ledger

Notes: Coughlin said he has not been given the "green light" on injured CB Sam Madison (hamstring) and DEs Michael Strahan (foot) and Osi Umenyiora (hip flexor). All three players appear to be at least one more week away from returning. Coughlin said there's a chance LB Brandon Short (quad) could do some work this week, but he's also unlikely to play. ...

Good news is that he played. Bad news is that he did not even appear on the stats sheet. For how many plays was he on the field?

he was there on every play ...also he was out of position on nuerous plays he kept losing containment
