Where in the world are the middle-aged dummies? Worldwide top 31 song countdown. (4 Viewers)

Andy Dufresne:

Synchronicity II - The Police
(duplicate, sixth vote)

I'm a little surprised to see this as the highest-scoring Police song. It doesn't usually get a lot of mention when people talk about their iconic material. It's the hardest-rocking song from their most popular album, so I'm not surprised it went over well with this crowd.

Don Quixote:

Up On Cripple Creek - The Band (Canada/US - Levon Helm born in US)
(new song)

I figured there would be more parity between this and The Weight, but I was wrong.

Sullie:

Working Man (Live in Cleveland) - Rush (Canada. . . Included to make the haters cry. . . Your salty tears quench my thirst for RUSH!)
(duplicate, second vote)

When I heard reggae beats start on the playlist, I was expecting The Police or Prince Buster, not Geddy and co.

krista4:

Suzanne - Leonard Cohen (Canada)
(duplicate, third vote)

I knew this was coming artist-wise, it was just a question of which song.

Doug B:

Hey Hey, My My (Into The Black) (1991 Live Version) - Neil Young
(duplicate, fourth vote)

As I mentioned in my Cortez writeup, my first Neil show was on the tour that produced the Weld live album. (None of the performances on it came from my show because the venue had a terrible sound system.) It set a very high bar for what I wanted out of a live show.

higgins:

Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic - The Police (UK/US mix)
(new song)

@krista4 This is not new. It was taken by Zegras11 before but mislabeled as "Everything She Does Is Magic."

@Pip's Invitation , "Ohio" was on my last five out, so at least it made a playlist!
That's right. Here's what I wrote about that one:

4. Ohio (CSNY non-album single, 1970)
Neil lives and creates in the moment, and nowhere is that better illustrated than this song, which was my other first exposure to him, also being included on the So Far compilation that my parents had. Neil decided to pen a song about the shooting deaths of four Kent State University student protesters by National Guard troops when David Crosby visited to show him a copy of Life magazine, which had photos of the incident. Stunned, he wrote the lyrics within minutes of first seeing the photos. Equally stunned, Crosby called Stephen Stills and Graham Nash and suggested they get to the studio as soon as possible. The quartet convened shortly thereafter and, with new bassist Calvin "Fuzzy" Samuels and new drummer John Barbata, required only a few takes to get the version we all know. Crosby was so overcome during the performance that he bellowed "Four!", "how many more?" and "Why?" at the end; these outbursts were unrehearsed and left on the recording. For a B-side, the band then recorded Stills' Find the Cost of Freedom, an ode to war casualties that he had unsuccessfully submitted for the Easy Rider soundtrack.

At the band's insistence, Atlantic Records rush-produced and rush-released the single, which was made available within weeks after recording, despite CSNY already having Teach Your Children climbing the charts. The band members believe this decision prevented Teach Your Children from reaching #1, but that it was absolutely the right thing to do.

The passion and anger that sparked Neil to write the song can be heard in every second of the recording. If you like immediacy and emotion in your rock and roll, this is the song for you. It never fails to move me deeply.

I was fortunate to see Neil play this with CSNY in 2000 and 2006, and surprisingly saw CSN do it as an encore without Neil in 1995.

And here's what I wrote about another that made Last 5 Out.

198. A Man Needs a Maid (Harvest, 1972)

This is probably my lowest-ranked Neil song that the stereotypical soccer mom would have heard of. And it's not mostly because of the title and chorus, which indeed have terrible optics and for which points were deducted -- mainly for prompting nearly 50 years of misinterpretations by douchebags. It's because the orchestral arrangement just doesn't work. It's too jarring. The solo piano live versions from the early '70s are SO much better, as is the suite on Live at Massey Hall 1971 in which this is combined with Heart of Gold.

About the misinterpretations. Neil is not saying women should be subservient. The song is really about him and his vulnerabilities at the time; he was laid up with back problems for much of the period between After the Gold Rush and Harvest. It's also the period in which he fell in love with actress Carrie Snodgress (referred to directly in one of the verses), who became the mother of his oldest son Zeke. She took care of him while he was unable to do so himself because of his back. Much of the song describes Neil's internal conflict of whether he can trust anyone enough to make them a true partner in his life, or whether he's better off with something more temporary. "I was thinking that maybe I'd get a maid ... just someone to keep my house clean, cook my meals and go away" is balanced with "when will I see you again?" "It's just the idea that anyone would think enough to say something like that would show that something else was happening," Neil said in 1971. "So don't take it personally when I say it. I don't really want a maid."

My top 5 from the 31 point round, excluding my own selection and prior to listening to the songs new to me:
  1. Mrs. Rannous, John Maddens Lunchbox: Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen
  2. Mister CIA: Radar Love - Golden Earring
  3. Ilov80s: Once In A Lifetime - Talking Heads
  4. zamboni: Under The Milky Way - The Church
  5. Mt. Man: Never Tear Us Apart - INXS
I'm pretty shocked that Bohemian Rhapsody was not the highest scoring song, and that Queen was not the highest scoring artist.

I knew 30 songs today, second-most of any day, not counting my own song but including repeats.

Known-to-me favorites from #1, not including my pick or 2112 and Runnin' with the Devil, which are on my list.

7. The Sound of Rand and McNally Quietly Weeping.

Which representative of these oft-confused-by-US-dumbasses countries will score more cumulative points: (a) Metallica (Denmark, the Danish!) (435) or (b) Van Halen (The Netherlands, Holland, the Dutch!) (422)?

(a) Metallica, in a squeaker

I sort of skipped the contest due to time constraints (and that I always seem to), but this was a hilarious heading that was made for me (I was guilty of this for the longest time in my youth).

:lmao:

The Weight: I knew this would be a high scorer and I'm glad to see it ended up number one, where I selected it (Chalky McChalkface).

Worrierqueen and I listen to Pandora quite a bit, with a drink in our hands outside enjoying the Louisiana evenings. It does not matter which channel/station we are listening to, The Weight is guaranteed to come on every time we listen to Pandora. The song obviously scores off-the-chart on likes and favorites. We sometimes make joke bets that it will come on as the third song or the fifth, etc. Yes, I am tired of it, but I still sing along at full voice every time in harmony.

Thanks to krista, Hawkes and 80s for their work on this one. And to Val for running his contest.

I'm disappointed that I couldn't participate as much in this one as the other 2 but I just got too far behind while I was out of the country and couldn't catch up. I'll scroll through the last 20-ish lists over the next few weeks searching for some new nuggets to discover. Thanks to all who participated in creating those playlists.

I just noticed that Landslide wasn't selected. A bit of a surprise to me.
Top 5 for me, but this was always Gold Dust Woman vs Silver Springs. The other Fleetwood Mac's in my constant rotation are on the second tier, which is still elevated over just about anything else, but nothing compares to those two.
Silver Spring was left off of Rumours because of Buckingham’s fragile ego.

Great job everyone. Thank you to Management and subordinates for all that you do. YOu're keeping this board enjoyable. I had originally planned on making an all Canadian list but life and things got in the way.

A few songs I kind of hoped I would see on the list:

First a couple of my favorite AC/DC tunes.

Let There Be Rock. - Bon has some great lyrics. This song is what R&R is all about imo
Ride On - I never get tired of this "ballad". More great lyrics from Bon.

Some CanCon
Heart of Gold - My favorite Neil Young Song and am surprised not one person had it in their list.
Rockstar - Yeah, I know! But this is a damn fun tune. :boxing: Neat video too.
Into The Mystic - I love this cover by one of my favorite Canadian artists. (Colin James) Probably not well known outside of Canada and that's too bad. So much talent.
After The Rain - Blue Rodeo is another Canadian group that's been around forever. Also not likely well known outside the country. So many great songs.

I am a bit embarrassed that there were many Canadian artists and songs by artists like Leonard Cohen that I was unfamiliar with. I'll have to go over the spreadsheet when I have some time and check these out.

Rockstar - Yeah, I know! But this is a damn fun tune. :boxing: Neat video too.

Paul Wall at :25 in made my jaw drop a little. That's Houston rap meets Nickelback, I guess. That dates the video pretty nicely. More on point is that appearance by Kendra from that Playboy show. Dancing up in the video there.

I see you, Kendra.

I do love that Groove Armada song with the Fatboy remix, by the way.

I see you, baby

Not the video but the song. Big Beat special.

Heart of Gold - My favorite Neil Young Song and am surprised not one person had it in their list.
I ranked this #50 in my Neil countdown and leading up to the reveal I warned it might be controversial. But no one seemed to care. There was much more consternation when I left Sugar Mountain out of my top 101.

I had been following your posts in this thread regarding your Neil thread and saw that there were a few blank spaces so went and looked at your other thread to see where you had it. Seemed like everyone that replied was in agreement with you, in general, that it isn't one of your favorite songs by him. I mean 50 is good, of course :). I just figured there might be someone like me who's a more casual Neil fan and thought this might appear somewhere. Happens in all the threads tho with songs that are a surprise.

I'm not sure of that even made any sense

Krista congratulated the contest winners, but I never saw who won - here's the final standings for the Charity Contest, and since neither got the ACE award right, I THINK the next tiebreak was total points. Don Quixote's selections scored 3984 points, while Dr. Octopus managed 3948. Krista will confirm (I hope). EDIT: Tiebreak was if your ACE showed up - Doc Ock's did. Nice that I learned how to read.....

And I'd like to publicly thank Pip for sniping my 2112 selection today. :tebow: Now I don't have to bother with a huge write-up on how great it is, somebody else already took care of that.

Leading into this, I was trying to decide if I was going to go ALL Rush for this draft, some Rush, or keep my usual limit of one song per band. After threatening the 1st option, I promised Krista I'd take the same number of Rush songs here that she took Beatles songs in the Brit draft. She picked one, so here we are.

But if I can only have 1 Rush song, I'm gonna take a whole album side of greatness! 2112 for me has always covered the range of what makes Rush awesome, and they take 20-ish minutes to prove how large that range is.

I love The Band, The Police and Fleetwood Mac but they were cases where I just couldn't decide on a single song that stood out above the others and they just never made it. The breadth of their catalog kind of hurt them for me.

The artists I am kind of surprised by their success:

- Rush: I knew there are some hardcore fans but I thought the anti or ambivalent Rush crowd would counter it and leave them more in the 25-30 range.
- INXS: Not sure why I am still surprised by how popular they are every time we do something like this
- Tool: I've come around on them, they deserve the love

All of the Beethoven

Would have included Ode To Joy and dedicated it to wikkid but I was going for all pop music. Plus, I couldn't find the specific part of the Ninth that I wanted nor did I even know how it was broken up and listed. That's when I knew that composers and "classical" would have left me with a journey too large to navigate, so I just found a convenient way to exclude them.

But could you really exclude Mozart or Beethoven or Tchaikovsky or even Ravel or Bizet or Stravinsky from world music? Pop it is, and pop it was.

Yep- I just am taking the term song a bit more literal for my ranking which helps narrow the field quite a bit. Which is why I've suggested if we ever do another to go instrumental. Though I suppose Ode to Joy technically doesn't qualify.

Oh sure. Wasn't even questioning that. You're about eight steps deeper than I was. I was just chiming in that I would have taken the Ninth and the ending chorale part if I had not narrowed it to pop.

***OFFICIAL CONTEST*** winners! Rush moving into the top 10 in the last round moved @Don Quixote into a tie with @Dr. Octopus , each correctly guessing eight artists. Very impressive showing!! Based on the tiebreaker, Dr. O takes first place and Don Quixote takes second, as DQ’s Ace Award guess did not show up in the countdown.

In the SUPER-AWESOME-WORLD-MEGA-CONTEST!!!111, @DrIanMalcolm takes first place with a score of seven points, based almost entirely on being the only person to place correctly all five artists in Question #4. Nicely done! For second place, there was a tie (with six points) between…wait for it… @Val Rannous and @Mrs. Rannous . Val wins the tiebreaker and household bragging rights on the basis of his stunningly accurate guess as to the total number of artists in the countdown. Full answers to these contest questions are below.

Now having gone back and actually read Krista's post, she did kinda, well, mention winners and tiebreaks. Oooooops.

As to having won the household tiebreak, :pickle:

There was some talk about high school homecoming songs (I believe it was in the UK thread). I went back in my yearbooks, and saw that for bands I liked, I wrote down INXS. Which I wouldn’t think would be the style for (roughly) 18 year old me. But obviously that hasn’t waned, with Never Tear Us Apart starring with its slow start with vocals instrument added in, including a brief sax solo, as one does.

#1s
Recognized by title alone: 28
Sounded familiar: 1
Knew From This Countdown: 2
Didn't know: 7
Repeats: 5

Selected Favorites:
Up on Cripple Creek (Don Quixote)
Where Is My Mind? (shuke) - My brain is often way out in the water. See it swimming? Also <3 to krista4 for picking it first.
Heaven And Hell (Raging Weasel)
Major Tom[Coming Home] (otb_lifer)
One (MAC_32) - I see what you did there
Back on The Chain Gang (Eephus)

Some songs I didn't know that I ended up liking:
Cattle and Cane (The Dreaded Marco)
Madness (rockaction)
Vitamin C (landrys hat) - Yes, this was selected earlier. Putting it here anyway.
Cusp of Eternity (KarmaPolice)

Dig The Vibe: Alors On Danse (ditkaburgers)

Other stats that may be interesting to at least one (other) person:

Favorites hit 41/43 other drafters. Which again, is intriguing since I was never plotting this out. Or at least probability in action? Leaders:
simsarge - 11 (Basically, I'm saying that simsarge's draft was better than mine)
Doug B & MAC_32 - 8
higgins - 6 & Val Rannous - 6
Then a huge tie at 5.

"Didn't Know" hit 37/43. A bit more sparse, even though it had an equal number of selections overall. Leaders:
Hov 34 - 10
Dreaded Marco, John Madden's Lunchbox (only, not also his secret ID), landry's hat & rockaction - 7

Totals:
Hov 34 - 13
simsarge - 12
simey - 10
Then a lot of 9s and 8s. Small shout out to simey (4/6) and Dr. Octopus (5/4) for performing well in both categories.

much thanks to the incomparable @krista4 for wranglin' this all togehter - i missed the first two, so extra sauce on this dog for those, as well!🤘

and to @Ilov80s for the tallying & compiling, and to @Hawks64 for the speedy playlist reveals - kudos, mi gente 👍

It was fantastic to have you in this countdown, as well as JML and raging weasel (I hope I didn't miss any other new participants, but I'm busy getting drunk in advance of my conference call). Your stories of your own selections and commentary on others was 🔥

The Band does have a great catalog, and love the other ones that have shown up too. The Weight deserves the praise and the others putting it #1. I guess I own this one by myself though — Levon Helm gives Up on Cripple Creek slight edge for me, but could toss a coin and be happy either way.

Shocking to me that Up On Cripple Creek didn't have other votes. OH was torn between that and The Weight. I bet it's a lot of people's second-favorite song from The Band.

Have we talked about the name "The Band"? Seems a little arrogant, like people from NY saying they're from "The City."

the half beat of the American R&B recordings

Omg. I had just listened to this on the playlist before I got to your write-up, and I was driving meself foggin' mad trying to figure out if the horns were coming in on the 1 or the 2. I think this might have to do with the half beat? In any case, big big big fan of this (new-to-me) song.

Don Quixote:

Up On Cripple Creek - The Band (Canada/US - Levon Helm born in US)
(new song)

In search yesterday, I came across this thread from 2020. I had forgotten about this thread and was surprised how closely this still ended up matching some of mine at the top. Maybe my tastes haven’t changed all that much.

Waterloo Sunset - The Kinks — My UK #1

God Only Knows - The Beach Boys — My US #2

What'd I Say - Ray Charles — My US #12

Up on Cripple Creek - The Band — My Worldwide #1

My Shot - Lin-Manuel Miranda/Hamilton — Unranked (mostly because I ruled Hamilton ineligible for US one due to some cast members, but then forgot about it)
Stage Fright has always been The Band song that hit me best.
