Where in the world are the middle-aged dummies? Worldwide top 31 song countdown. (1 Viewer)

Krista congratulated the contest winners, but I never saw who won - here's the final standings for the Charity Contest, and since neither got the ACE award right, I THINK the next tiebreak was total points. Don Quixote's selections scored 3984 points, while Dr. Octopus managed 3948. Krista will confirm (I hope). EDIT: Tiebreak was if your ACE showed up - Doc Ock's did. Nice that I learned how to read....

??? I tagged all the winners, including you, in the congratulatory post. ???

As for the Ace Award, it wasn't really spelled out, and if DQ wanted to object he could, but in the prior countdown, if no one got the Ace Award right in the tiebreaker, then whoever had the artist with two songs and most points would win, then the artist with three songs and most points, etc. Dr. O had Power Station, which got three votes for three different songs including eight points for his song selection, while DQ had zero. :)

Awesome write-up, rock. Can you explain what you mean by "half-beat"?

Sure thing. Let me hope I can explain it like I hear and how you'd hear it and do it orally, maybe. I'm imperfect at this, too.

Here's Fats Domino. Hear the slightly unaccented half-beat in the 1-2-3-4 beat? This is the exact song ska stole from and made a new genre of

Hear that upbeat stroke on the half beat - ska ska ska ska on the 1 AND 2 AND 3 AND 4 AND

It's different than this

Those are my two favorite Fats songs, by the way. Heh. I love Fats.

So ska takes that R&B and emphasizes the half beat. I'll play a slow one first

Then speeds it up

Instead of 1-2-3-4

It goes 1-and-2-and-3-and-4-and

Make a guttural sound every upbeat between the beat

uh uh uh uh

Heart of Gold - My favorite Neil Young Song and am surprised not one person had it in their list.
I ranked this #50 in my Neil countdown and leading up to the reveal I warned it might be controversial. But no one seemed to care. There was much more consternation when I left Sugar Mountain out of my top 101.
WTF! Sugar Mountain did not crack the top 101?
It's my Penny Lane, if you will.

I get it ...Penny Lane, Sugar Mountain, Eric Clapton's solo career.

New-to-me favorites from #1:

Heaven and Hell -- Black Sabbath (Raging Weasel). As mentioned in the Brit countdown, I don't know much Sabbath after the first three albums, and pretty much none of the Dio era. This song was as epic as any hard rock/metal act got in the late 70s.
Pretty Lady -- Lighthouse (Simsarge). Chicago wasn't eligible for this countdown, but this song sounds like it could be one of their gems from the '70s.
Cusp of Eternity -- Opeth (KarmaPolice). A hard rock/metal epic from a different era. I liked this one best of KP's many Opeth picks.
Creeping Death -- Metallica (Manster). I know little pre-And Justice Metallica. This was a rager.
Cattle and Cane -- The Go-Betweens (Marco). Great arrangement; the best of the Forster/McLennan material taken.

Here's my ranking of everyone's rankings:

I was driving meself foggin' mad trying to figure out if the horns were coming in on the 1 or the 2. I think this might have to do with the half beat?

I think they're coming in on that exact half beat. Get your 1-2-3-4 from the bass and drums and the horns sound like one is in the middle of a 4/4 beat. My foot hits the floor on one and then the horn accent is when it's up in the air.

I think.

Try it at home and get back to us. LOL.

Good luck on your conference call. Don't be too drunk.

I'm living rent-free in your mind's top 500-600.

It would take me a hundred squillion years to rank each song that was taken in the countdown.
It would have felt interminable if I'd tried to do it all at once. I just slotted every new song from a particular day on that day (usually just before bed, as I stay up later than my wife and son).

As for what's next, other than the various countdowns and such that are already going on...covers thingie? It was mentioned, and I thought it sounded fun. We could do draft or countdown format, but did we do draft before?

I would not be able to volunteer for countdown duty for a while, if we went that direction. Any countdown would have to be in June.

I'm unavailable (as in, on a cruise ship with no phone/internet) the first week of May, so I'm not able to commit to much anything before that. My Pink Floyd list is already in to Anarchy!

covers thingie?
I like this idea.

What about the idea where everyone chooses an artist and ranks their top 31? I liked that one also.

I would be willing to take everyone's artist preference list. Everyone gets their first choice, unless two or more people have it #1 and then I throw it into a randomizer. That could be real interesting. :shades:

After all the #1's are doled out, I go to the #2's on the remaining lists, and so on. You could leave a list of 1, 5, 10, 20, 50. Up to you. #Ranked Choice Voting

I did. (I usually don't, but I saw that one. ). I was saying that in case the next thing is something other than a countdown run by you.

I'm done for a while. Got sucked into the 80's movie countdown and I still need to do my Pink Floyd rankings for Anarchy's thread.

Alors On Danse - Stromae
(new artist)

@ditkaburgers is a big fan of Belgian superstar Stromae and has seen him live three times (once while she was on crutches). Despite singing in French and getting virtually no airplay in the US, he's played the big stage at Coachella a few years back and played two nights recently at a 8000 seat venue in SF.

I'm proud to say I first repped the artist to her during her first year away at college. I sent her this song and she immediately bonded with it. "Alors on Danse" became her travel song; she always listens to it while heading to the airport. She picked it over a couple of other Stromae tracks but prefers his second album Racine Carree to the debut that contains this song but this

Back On The Chain Gang - The Pretenders
(new song)

I love the song and its spirit of resilience in the face of loss. Most of you are probably familiar with the story. It was recorded a month after the death of guitarist James Honeyman Scott to whom it was dedicated. Actually the song had been in the works before Scott's death but print the legend.

It has one of Hynde's best vocals and an absolutely stunning bridge. Scott's fill-ins on guitar, Rockpile's Billy Bremner and longtime Macca sideman Robbie McIntosh gives the tune a lightness that's different from what the band's original lineup would have done. I even like the title with the throwback to Lee Dorsey and Allen Toussaint and probably use the expression "back on the chain gang" in conversation more than I should.

You guys reallly like Neil Young, huh? Didn't see that coming.
Thats my biggest takeaway from all this. Im flummoxed to be honest.
Didnt realise how popular he is in North America and by a big chunk of music fans in this forum.
Ive always been singles over albums, but his strength is albums. One top 30 hit in the Uk, but almost every album charting well there.

I know several artists I adore, cite him as their idol though so maybe his peak period was before i was conscious of his work.

I'll let Neil know he won Saturday night :-)

Thank you @krista4 for your incredible time and effort so we can all enjoy and learn about all the great music here.

Thank you to @Hawks64 for creating all the playlists. I hope to catch up soon.

Thank you to @Ilov80s for the solid standings updates. Much appreciated!

Good to see @New Binky the Doormat back! (binky not glad)
Saves me writing the same thing.
Extra double plus super thanks to Krista4 for her relentless dedication and effort to keep this on track and fun for all.

I will also thank Pips Invitation for his huge work in posting so much material in this thread. Always interesting. Too much to get through and comment on.

When I thought of it, I wondered if we should put limits on it so we don't get a ton of artists already covered in the other drafts. E.g.: no artists that got a top 20 score in any draft, something like that. Or knowing many of us, we would naturally do that as well because we are nerds.

Also, do FCFS so that we only have 1 person who could be doing a specific artist?

On The Beach (CSNY 74 Album) - Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
(new song)

What I said in my Neil countdown:

18. On the Beach (On the Beach, 1974)
A song about being one of the last survivors after the apocalypse, inspired by the Nevil Shute book and Stanley Kramer film of the same name, this is simply stunning and has passages that sound like they could be written about today's pandemic: "The world is turnin, I hope it don't turn away"; "I need a crowd of people, but I can't face them day to day"; "I head for the sticks with my bus and friends, I follow the road though I don't know where it ends"; and one of my very favorite lines of his, "Though my problems are meaningless, that don't make them go away."
The mellow blues arrangement, which is as chilling and compelling as the lyrics, befits the influence of the honeyslides consumed during recording. The solos could get searing on the CSNY 1974 tour; even though C, S and N all HATED the On the Beach songs (too much of a downer, man), they didn't complain when Neil put them in the setlists and gave them their all.
It has been played only 5 times since that tour. On the 1999 solo tour, Neil broke it out for the first time in 24 years after someone lobbied for it at a backstage meet-and-greet. Such occasions are very special, as there are only 14 known live performances.
This is the song I mentioned that made me emotional when writing about it even though there is no intense personal story that goes with it. (No, those emotions haven't gone away as we've climbed higher.) I think it's because this song really was a case of "my little secret". The album was out of print in the '80s and '90s and almost none of my peers had heard it, as radio ignored it. In high school, a friend and I pooled money to buy old vinyl copies of Time Fades Away and On the Beach. I didn't have a record player, so he kept the vinyl and I copied them to cassette. That's what Gen X-ers had to do to hear this material until one got broadband (OTB finally came out on CD in 2003; I don't know if TFA ever did because Neil hates it.) The theme of isolation, backed by the musical equivalent of a long sigh, really spoke to an introverted teen/twentysomething who was in his own head all the time. It wasn't until 1998 that I found other people who loved this as much as I did.
OK, maybe there is an intense personal story that goes with it.

Neil's inclusion of a CSNY performance of this song on Archives Vol. II speaks volumes about the version that jwb chose. Neil was miserable on the 1974 CSNY reunion tour and has had nothing but bad things to say about it -- both the experience and the music that was performed -- ever since. He included only two performances from it on Archives Vol. II. One was Pushed It Over the End, which aside from one acoustic show was never performed except on that tour and is one of his greatest songs that never appeared on a studio album. The other was a version of On the Beach (not sure if it's the same performance as on the CSNY 1974 release). On that tour, all the great things about the song I mentioned in the writeup were heightened, and Stephen Stills contributed some blistering blues guitar licks that took it to a whole other level. Even Neil had to acknowledge that that tour's arrangement of On the Beach is an essential part of his history.

I was really excited for that CSNY 74 release, and it didn't disappoint at all. That tour is known for being overblown and sloppy, as the stadiums were not really the best venues for CSNY type music (and like you mentioned, Neil was miserable). But this whole set is excellent, and this song immediately jumped out as a real gem. Yea, the addition of Stills takes it to an entirely different place - the song is almost hypnotic to me due to their guitar interplay. Musically, to me, this set is easily one of the best things released in the 00's, and this version of On the Beach is one of my all time favorites.

covers thingie?
I like this idea.

What about the idea where everyone chooses an artist and ranks their top 31? I liked that one also.

I would be willing to take everyone's artist preference list. Everyone gets their first choice, unless two or more people have it #1 and then I throw it into a randomizer. That could be real interesting. :shades:

After all the #1's are doled out, I go to the #2's on the remaining lists, and so on. You could leave a list of 1, 5, 10, 20, 50. Up to you. #Ranked Choice Voting
This was originally @KarmaPolice idea.
I’d be in.

I don't think there are too many artists, other than the ones we've done/doing now, in which I could justifiably go 31 deep without just picking stuff (not even Krokus). Would probably have to sit this one out.

This was a great draft, even if my participation did not equal the other two. I had a pretty rough / busy month that didn't leave me a lot of posting energy, but I did follow along daily, listening, reading/liking, and enjoying everyone's comments and stories.

For me, Queen not finishing #1 was a mild surprise only because I did not realize so many liked Neil (I was always camp Neil). I am also happy to see CSN(Y) do so well - I really like those guys. I didn't realize we were combining them for the charity contest or I would have picked them (I figured they'd somewhat cancel each other out song-wise if people were going to stick to one per artist).

INXS was a surprise as well (I always liked them but never realized how much others did, nor how many good songs they really have) , and I need to hear more of Nick Cave as I was pretty unaware of him.

Thanks to @krista4 for doing not just this one but all three, and all of her help / playlists / tabulations / etc - this was a fun exercise, and you guys all rock.

Thanks as always to my stalwarts, @Hawks64 and @Val Rannous , and in this case new guy @Ilov80s for all the help. And to @Uruk-Hai , @Hawks64 , and @The Dreaded Marco for joining me this time in the charitable donations!

Reminder to @Dr. Octopus , @Don Quixote , @DrIanMalcolm , and @Val Rannous that we need your charities!
After getting a little peek into all you have to do for something like this, thanks really doesn't seem to suffice. You are an absolute rockstar, period, end of story!

Not going to lie, a little break would be nice lol. Not sure I'd be able to do playlists for anything till July. Bunch of travel and weekend stuff in May and June.
